My corp is discussing getting into the merc business. We're still pretty young, SP-wise (most chars in the 5-6M range). We have a good deal of PvP experience for chars our age, but due to lack of capital ship skills as yet, I imagine we'd be operating mostly in high sec at first.
So, on to my questions: 1. Is it worth it to even consider going into the merc business with our level of SP? Or is SP even a big concern at all (compared to, say, an impressive killboard)? 2. How much work can you expect to get as a new merc corp? I don't even have a good sense what the market is like, who looks for mercs, how much time we'll have to plan to do other stuff, etc. 3. I can get a good idea what smaller merc corps charge by looking at the stickies, but any more guidance along those lines would be appreciated as well. 4. Are there any renowned merc corps out there that blog or post a lot about their exploits? I find one of the quickest ways to learn a trade in EVE is to read from the best.

Not a good idea posting anything involving mercs in C&P, somebody's just going to come along and troll you... Oh... wait...

I'm not a merc so I don't know what I'm talking about, but the answer is yes.

Their is a lot of merc-corps, so you need really to find a nisch that you only can offer, or offer best, or just be the best corp when it comes to "bang for the money". Harsch I know, but that is the reality. To make a name for yourself, you should take some contracts for free, just to get yourself a name and demonstrate your skills.
Well, that is some basic ideas, but you dont need to follow them =)

So, where else should I be posting about merc-related things? There certainly are a lot of merc-related threads on this forum, and one of the stickies refers to a merc corp list.
Anyway, I don't think Ace's advice was harsh at all and is indeed what I figured the case would be.

Misread this the first time through.... I would say it depends how willing you are to take losses to accomplish your missions. Sounds like you'll be mostly flying T1 ships which means against any tougher targets you may face pilots in better ships than you so you may have to take higher loss numbers than you'd like to accomplish your goals. It depends on you. Biggest key to being a merc is satisfying the client. As long as you do that kill stats don't really matter.

It's tough at first as a new outfit. You'll be forced to take jobs you normally wouldn't want to in order to establish yourself. A nice way to give yourselves a leg up is to do some work pro-bono until you establish a reputation. Plenty of people look for Mercs for numerous different reasons. Generally you'll want to give your pilots 1 or 2 days to get to the target area before starting war-decs and you will need to make sure the client understands that up front.

Basically what you need to do is compare what you can offer to a client to what others can, and price your services accordingly. Better reputation allows you to charge a bit more but only to a certain extent. After all... people are only willing to pay a certain ammt no matter how good you are.

Honestly the only blog I've seen by anyone in a Merc outfit is Ombey's blog about his time in KIA. I'm working on a blog myself but since I only just started it, and I'm starting from Taram's "birth" in EVE I'm not up to my merc experiences yet :)
No matter what you decide to do, go it on your own or join an established merc outfit, I wish you luck. Being a merc can be loads of fun while at the same time it can be excruciatingly boring. Really the 'fun' level depends on how you look at the game and whether your targets chose to un-dock or not :) .

Just ignore Avan Sercedos, when an exclamation mark is trying to flame you just forget and move to the next post. And yes I know the OP is also a big fat exclamation mark.
Anyways, too many merc corps at the moment that are crap, makes the whole profession look noobish in my opinion. If you can get some business and prove that youre well worth the money and that you arent just another fail merc corp then excellent, there should be plenty of business for ya.
As mentioned allready, do some free jobs for people and rack up a nice killboard and happy customers, if you do well then you wont have a hard time getting business.
P.S. I have a few people I dislike so if youre looking to do a few free jobs to get the ball rolling give me a shout, Id pay war costs obviously

On a side note, to actually answer one of the OPs questions: The merc market seems to be rather overflowing atm. But I hear doing a few contracts while waiv(e)ing the fee works to get a reputation started.
Edit: waive is a mean word :(

Everyone wants to be mercs these days, so I say wait a while. War dec a corp that's around your size and work your way up from there to gain pvp experience. tbh

Well what to charge for merc jobs really depends on the job itself. If it is just one player your going after (lets face it, it's never just one player. You go after one player you deal with the corp). Where they are, how big they are etc. My advice would be to gank some noobs in high sec for a while and get your sp up as well as your rep and go from there.

I'd start by war deccing random high sec corps to build experience/KB stats, so you learn what empire wars are like and you can be ready for a good majority of the situations.
Do it for fun and experience, then do it for profit and fun. __________________________________________________
