You get a ship and pop the Cynosural beacon in a low sec/null sec area, the capital ship locks onto and jumps to it.
No, I think only capital ships and tech II battleships can lock onto cyno fields.

Quote: 1. How do these work exactly?
Some ships use JumpDrives, instead of normal stargates. (Jump-freighters can use both)
Typically these will be Capital Ships - Dreadnaughts, Carriers, Motherships, etc.
In order for these ships to travel, they need to pass through a Cynosural Field.
A gang/fleet-member will have a Cyno Generator on their ship (along with a supply of Liquid Ozone, to fuel the genny), and travels to the destination system. They find a handy place to fire up the cyno-genny (outside a friendly POS, or Outpost... or deep safespot... or on top of enemy fleet... or wherever) and when it's running, the Capital pilots can right-click their options and select to jump through.
Using the cyno-genny uses a bit of Liquid Ozone fuel (amount varies by skill & ship), and immobilises that ship for 10 minutes. (or 5 minutes, if in a Force Recon ship). That's a long time to be a sitting duck, especially as the Cyno Field will immediately show up on the OverView of everyone (including enemies) in local space. It will also show up on Star Maps, if you're looking for them.
Quote: 2. are the cyno ones effective with all the stealth ships?
Any ship can deploy & activate the regular Cynosural Generator. Often, it will be used on stealth/cloaked ships, though... especially if the destination is deep in enemy territory. It needs to get there in one piece, after all.
Covert Cynos are a bit of a different story. They require higher skills to use, and only certain ships can deploy & activate them (Mainly the stealth-types). Only a Black-ops ship can lock onto that covert cyno (and since the cyno is covert... it does not show up on the OV, like regular ones).
The Black-ops ship can generate a "bridge" to that covert-cyno, allowing stealth-ships to jump ahead.
There are supposedly some changes in the works, for the whole covert-cyno & Black-ops thing, as it's fairly limited in its application atm. |

But can't capships jump through to the cyno instantly, even if the cyno ship is immobile?

That's the idea - cap ships move from one system to another instantly.
The cyno ship is locked in place - it either needs to be well tanked or disposable. It's not uncommon for a cap ship to jump in and remote rep the cyno ship until it can move again. ______________________ Isn't it time you learned to fight back? Agony Unleashed Home of the PvP University.

Locked how? Can it just plain not move or just not warp?
For instance if you drop a cyno outside a POS can the cyno ship then fly inside of the forcfield? --Bird of Prey: Forum God

Plain not move - so if you dropped a cyno outside a forcefield, the cyno ship would be forced to sit just outside the shields until the timer was up. (Though in this case the POS guns would probably dissuade people from attacking). For this reason, it's also not uncommon for people to write off the cyno ship as a suicide case, and use something like a Kestrel, with just the cyno gen and enough liquid ozone to create a single field.

No. The ship that drops the Cyno is stuck.
Cannot move under regular power; cannot warp off.

POS cyno generators require that your alliance have a certain level of sovereignty in order to anchor. If you have one (and it's online) cap ships can jump to them if they're in range. It's just another POS module that causes the tower to consume extra liquid ozone/heavy water for the CPU/PG requirements.

From the comments above, I'd expect the list of cyno fields generated by fleet members would show up in the ship options menu - the same place you find the "self destruct" and "stop my ship" options.

nope i popped one the other day you cannot cloak before deploying it nor after, so you are basicly held still for ten minutes, with the cyno in everyones overview in system, and completly in plain sight.

If you have access to a cyno gen on a pos, when you right click on your cap ship it will show locations you are able to jump to.

Can I just ask a quick question? If using a Jump Freighter in high sec, can i cyno jump to low-sec from high sec, or do I have to travel by normal stargates to low-sec before cyno jumping?
sorry for tagging onto the end of someone else's thread.

As long as you are within range of the cyno field, you can jump to it regardless of the security of your current system. So yes, high-sec to low-sec jumps are possible (though not the reverse as the cyno cannot be opened in high-sec).
