Must admit, one of the better ones I read.

The standard value of Wheat is 100ISK per ton. The standard price of a batch (500kg) of Quafe is 50ISK. Luxury vehicles are 10000ISK each.
Assuming all these are trade prices (wholesale) it means 1 bottle of Quafe is 0.2 ISK, a loaf of bread around 0.1 isk, and driving a luxury car will cost you 20,000isk. That makes the average annual income of the plebs around 15000ISK. Owning a shuttle equals 2 years income, owning a Rifter 20 years income. |

Using cloning to reconstruct would probably cost in the region of 30k to 50k isk. So if the capsuleer gave each 500k isk they would be able to live comfortably of the interest alone.
you make the mistake of assuming that we can relate our products now with eve products. What if they compress the bread, freeze dry it or modify it in some other way. What if it is quafe powder - just add water and its for 10,000 bottles. We have no coorelation to planetside pleb economy - and they most likely do not use isk -except prime fiction - so we can only conclude that capsuleers are very rich.
Foreign currency exchange is complex enough on only one planet, earth.

Not really. We have no idea how much the Federation put aside, or this guy, or what kind of pod pilot he is. Also, dedicated players can make hundreds of millions of ISK per day trading, mining, or running missions. The guy could be a hulk pilot that mines veldspar in a 0.8 system 10 hours a day for all we know.
I do like the Gallente are going heavy on propaganda, stating they're close to total victory.

I would be amazed if the Empires haven't consolidated their currencies into a handful per empire. The most complex I could see would be the Caldari, since each Megacorp would likely have its own currency, then a general currency for the State as a whole, and the Amarr heirs might do something similar. Gallente might still have different currencies from the other races that joined the Federation, and the Minmatar may have tribal currency.
But even then, that's nothing compared to what earth is like.

Edited by: Garion Avarr on 06/08/2008 00:35:33 To answer a few of the questions regarding the value of ISK -- regular people generally don't use ISK, regional currencies are used. Values for commodities aren't perfect for trying to convert ISK to what it might be worth in everyday terms or in our terms, because the spaceside economy is still a bit different than the planetside economy. There is a thread that discussed this at length, I'll try to find it.
And as for the story, I shall repeat what I said elsewhere: beautiful, awesome, and terrifying.
EDIT: That thread I mentioned. ________________________________ This is not a signature. |

This Chronicle is great, it offers quite a few insights. Gallente media propaganda while not really giving a shit about the people they pose as caring about, the view of the normal people towards Capsuleers ("fear, admiration, distrust and wonder") and how insanely rich (some) Capsuleers are ("How much of this floor is yours?"-"All of it").
I really like it. -------- Ideas for: Mining

nice imagery.
but why exactly did he do that? altruism for altruism's sake? he confesses as much that it isn't his only motive. and when he tries to explain his true motive... it's... altruism?
there's some back story i'm not getting here...

I think he admitted that sympathy wasn't his only motive, then said it was altruism - I suspect it's a bit more complicated than that, but his statements weren't really contradictory. To me at least it sound more like that he wasn't too happy with what he perceived as a government/media attempt to control these 2 people, and saw similarities to a past relationship of his in this couple as well - so he did something about it. If he was around for a significant part of the media publicity tour as it sounds like he was, the time he spent with these people was probably a bigger expenditure for him than the money. Definitely a great story

Really nice work Abraxas. Lots of depth in this piece and well...all the ones you've been putting out since FW loomed on the horizon, actually. The fiction coming out recently in the Chrons and big news arcs has been a great addition to the novel, I find.
Two thumbs up. Read it, people!

I believe Abraxas said elsewhere that that picture was actually what inspired him to write this chronicle.

All of the above is quite true. It could also be that he simply wants to break up the couple for his own end, whether it's to seduce Braea or for whatever reason. He's certainly a devil's advocate of some sort, even if he's doing it for reasons we may perceive as justifiable.
Within the new Factional Warfare environment I find myself writing more and more stories of people doing the right thing for the wrong reasons (or the other way around). Not that there hasn't been plenty of moral ambiguity in the earlier stories, but it tended to be described at a distance, as an observed situation rather than one that emotionally involves the reader. Newer pieces like "With Acknowledgments to Mad Dogs" (which remains my own favourite story, even despite its imperfections) involve you far more with their characters than, say, something like "The Shrinking Skin".
And yes, this chron was directly inspired by the photo of poor Ty Ziegel and his bride.
