My opinion, if you want to pay a ransom you better start shouting in local quickly.

So this makes you a liar and a fiend. Not to mention you lost opportunity on making isk. You didn't even know what I was prepare to pay for the safe return of the content.
What makes someone believe that if you do accept ransom that you would follow through with it when you pull off dirty underhanded tricks such as the one you pulled on me.
You can't even fend off 1 BS on a 1 on 1 dual, and have to call in a carrier for help. Then go and flame their post when someone plays by the pirate game (no rules) and owns one of your member. What sore losers does that?

What kind of pirate are you?
you just keep making fool out of yourself
you jumped into local and started screaming in local that we should not shoot you, you have nothing and you will eject your stuff, you need it for mission etc..
how much was you gonna offer to 5+ppl gang who have plenty of isk and bored for 16 giant containers?
right
then after we poped you, we checked the can and told you that you can have it back for free, i even send you 1m because i was nice ;)
then, we got ambushed by a gang of players much like yourself, and you were sitting there and waiting to ninja loot after the fight, iv had you locked for a while befor iv send my drones after you and you poped again, you realy thought you could sit in a hauler in a middel of a big fight and nothing gonna happen to you? your fault for being new, not ours I am being nice to you still, do not push me
now stop whining and hire some mercs already

In the end I guess one in the gang destroyed your can.
You know, eve is all about making other people suffer. We did not really care about you, your money or your can, so someone just targeted it and f1. It's not like we wanted it, but we did not want anyone else to have it either, and tbh, keeping it and ransoming it later is never an option when the cargo is "Janitors" :P

I hate pirates as it is. This game makes it suck for anyone who happens upon one, there should be at least some way to escape without having to pay a ransom besides outgunning them.
Make pirates actually work just a little hard to get some ISK.

You mean like farming mindless, predictable, non-challenge npc's? or sucking on rocks? Maybe getting datacores from research agents for no time investment?
Yeah, that's way harder than piracy, it's not like miners and mission runners can be replaced by a button or anythi... oh wait.

I have to tank sentries as well as whatever firepower you decide to throw at me... And if you bring friends, that's even more that I have to worry about holding in place to ransom while staying alive myself. And they do make WCS's for you, though if we happen to get an infinite point on you, you're boned.

Originally by: ecdt I was hauling some secure cargo in attempt to complete a storyline mission in low sec. I knew the risk, but I choose to do so anyway. Jumped a gate and saw bunch of red on overview. I offer to surrender but they refused and didn't bother with any ransom. I knew I wouldn't make it out alive in an industrial. My best option was to jet the cargo and come back for it later rather then having it blown up along with the ship.
The cargo is worthless to everyone but myself. I was willing to pay for it as long as I have gotten it back safely. I would like to point out that I did mention that in local as well. I came back in another ship in order to pick it up and found out that the cargo have gotten destroyed because one of the pirate was bored.
I was a little ticked off and I'm still ticked off because I lost 1 whole point of faction standing. One small act of mischief from them cost more to me then what its worth to them. I expressed my desire to have it back for a price. Yet they choose to be a douche bag.
I do understand that this is a game. I also understand that its annoying as well to build good standing.
I was really looking forward to getting out of low sec and work with other lvl 4 agents in hi sec with better quality. My plan is now delayed by 2 months roughly speaking.
Its really tough to get vengeance or justice when you're alone. Not to mention its awfully expensive to hire mercenaries. Its best to bite my tongue and deal with my grief for the time being. Its not much I can do against such a large group.
Let the rage build up over a period of time then take it out on various friends and members of family, and just when it peaks make a forum post whilst your having a rage induced coronary failure.
It adds drama seeing your post finish mid sentance perhaps imagining your last dying wish was to just actually hit the post reply button.

You can't imagine how hard this game is for carebears. Let me just fill you in on the details:
- CCP prenerfed F.O.F Missiles (and removed the CN ones), so they (well, someone or something) have to click F1-F8 WAY MORE OFTEN than those lazy-ass piwats! - Roids deplete AND can be mined by others! - The market changes, so they might have to change their research field, which MAKES THEM LOSE UP TO 49.9 RP!
Not even mentioning all those inconveniences like 40.000m¦ courier storyline missions.
Don't you dare to say carebears have it too good again!

and for this, uhh, do you konw how hard a pirates life actually is? most of the time, you probably just get hit by a gate camp, but there is more than pirating to that, they have to perma tank the sentry guns when they find their victims in gate camps, and have to worry if someone is going to go and bust it up, which can be done easily if you bring even half their numbers, because they have to setup their ships to perma tank the guns which dish out something like 350dps, sustained
secondly, other pirates, the ones that find you above a planet or asteroid belt or whatever, they have to scan you down first, which can be difficutl with the directional scanner, they could use a probe, but that takes ages
after they find you, they have to catch you, and if you put up half a decent fight, then its not so easy for them either
third, they have to watch out for OTHER pirates as well in the system scanning THEM down
a pirates life isnt as easy as you think

Agreed. What you do is just as legitimate as mining or production. But the main thing is that piracy injects that all-important element of risk into the game. While I haven't turned to the dark side myself yet, I can't envision EVE without you guys creating that paranoia about what's on the other side of the gate.
Keep dishing out fear.

I would not really consider them successful pirates.....
They kill you and take your stuff on the ocean... what makes a successful pirate other than that? I guess the little chinese guy burning DVDs?
The chinese guy burning DVDs as as software pilot is minimizing risk to himself while making a profit.
They'll keep doing that until someone uses a Q Ship to capture them. Then when they board the ship filled with Marines and armed to the teeth they'll be destroyed. I'll grant you that Somalia is less stable than Iraq, shame the world isn't doing much to fix the problem.
Contrary to what you learned from Johnny Depp, pirate ships during the Age of Sail were typically outclassed in every way by naval vessels. That's why the pirates preyed on soft targets. But that is neither here nor there. Your entire argument and all subsequent arguments in this thread were destroyed when you said that the "OP has a point". The OP doesn't have a point. The OP doesn't have a clue. The OP blindly waddled into lowsec in an industrial ship without even bothering to poke his head in with a frigate to test the waters. The OP got what he deserved.
There were more than one case of a ship of the line being used to Pirate.
Most Pirates you are correct had smaller ships than their prey. They would strip out any extra stuff to make their ships faster. They were far more maneuverable than the warships of the day, and they'd stack extra cannon on board from captured ships.
The point of being a pirate is to make money. If an item only has value to its owner (such as a mission box) then the only way to get isk for it is to sell it back to them, failing to do so really isn't piracy because you lost out on an opportunity.

There is a fundamental misunderstanding of piracy in this game... Why do people pirate? To make ISK. What is the ISK for? To spend in the pursuit of happiness.
If blowing up a hauler and screwing a guys standings is their idea of happiness, why the hell would they ransom it? They only ransom so they can afford ships with which to blow up peoples standings haulers lol.
