I've noticed the general lack of AE (area effect) weapons in game (Smart Bombs, Stealth Bomber Bombs, Doomsdays and some forms of ECM are all that there is, I believe). I'm further under the impression that torpedos were once AE weapons.
Why were AE torpedoes changed? (assuming my impression is correct)
Why has CCP generally avoided multi-target weapons? (spherical concussion blasts that push ships away from the point of detonation, perhaps a cone-shaped area energy "beam" attack, deployable smart bombs, ship explosions on self-destruction, etc.)
Just curious, as more AE seems one obvious answer to 'blobbing'?

I REALLY think that large ships should do damage to the ships around them within a certain radius when they explode (BS and up...)
BS - AO 10 KM ~ 100 DMG all types Dread - AO 30 KM ~ 300 DMG all types Carrier - AO 50 KM ~ 500 DMG all types Mothership - AO 80 KM ~ 800 DMG all types Titan - AO 150 KM ~ 1500 DMG all types...
Something along those lines...

You might have just his the reason they are so limited. Big fights have a high marquee value, so the more ships you get together the more you can go to the press and talk about the amazing fleet battles.
Implement features that make blobbing more dangerous (such as fireships) and you get smaller fights, which sound much less epic when you go to give interviews (which in turn brings in fewer players)

Area of effect weapons required the server to calculate who was in range. This put a heavy load on the server, especially with many targets or many AoE weapons used simultaneously. This heavy load was felt as lag and lead to many complaints by the players.
Thus it so happened that the AoE weapons were mostly removed.

Who gives a crap about interviews?
I prefer smaller engagements than the blob-lag-drone-****fest that is today's fleet battle in eve...
