Planetary satellite/beacons surounding planets and moons that you can warp to while in inner orbit. These beacons would have rats around them that you can grind on and would be another place you could hang out and play instead of asteriod belts.
This would also be a good way to avoid warping "through" planets and moons. If you are trying to warp to something and a planet is in the way, your ship will stop at the planet and place you in inner orbit. You must then use the beacons to get around it. This would also reduce AFK autopiloting as well I would imagine.
Now, you wouldnt have to warp to each individual beacon seperately. You can bring up the solar system map/mini map and then click on the planet to zoom in. You would be able to see all the beacons and stations around the planet. Right click on the beacon or station you want to go to and set destination. Hit autopilot and your ship will automatically warp around the planet following the beacons till you get to your destination.
I think it would be an awesome site warping around a huge planet in "inner" orbit.

This would be a good way to get round the rather immersion-breaking 'flying through planets'. It always irked me

Well... You might enjoy it once or twice when it is something new, but over a long time it will just be annoying. Traveling in bigger ships already can take a reasonable amount of time.
Even when you do not autopilot in some ships you need half an hour or more to cover 20 Jumps. If you have to move arround Planets now and get out of warp and enter warp several times you might end up flying arround 2 hours just getting from point a to point b. I do not know how much you enjoy just flying arround and watching the background, but I really do not like traveling that much and i bet 95% of the eve players would not like some new feature that is basically wasting their gametime.

I see your point. Maybe instead of stopping, they could make the ship automatically arc around the planet instead of going through it.

When you do not slow down a lot you would not even notice that you are orbitting arround a planet since ships move kind of very fast when they are in warp ;).

[off topic] Not to mention flying through Stations when you leave them to go to another location that is behind you. [/off topic]
Depends on what CCP have in store for us with expansions, isn't there meant to be atmospheric flight coming up? If that is the case, then there will be heaps to do at planets?

Just wanna add that in general the idea to give planets some kind of meaning and adding some stuff to do arround them is fine.
Just the warping arround them part is something you should forget about imo ;).

Actually it would just be nice to be able to Orbit Moons and Planets :)
And put more than one POS around them :) Maybe need a minimum of 1000KM between them or something though so that you can't have interlocking ranges of fire :)

I orbited a small moon on Sisi a few times, manually.
Just takes a fast Inty and some time to kill.

what's wrong with interlocking fire? I think that if you had two POSes slugging it out with each other at range while fleets of ships flew between them trying to break the others defensive line, it'd be cool.
also I'm all for the idea of your ship arcing around planets using beacons, provided you don't have to stop at said beacons unless you choose to do so. __________________________________________________ |

Ahh yes, this is simply an optical illusion! Infact you are actually in a sub-space corridor which exists on a different plane to normal space generated by your warp engines. The little tunnel thing you see? You can see out of it... thats why you never collide with planets or stations - and never actually fly "through" them.
That's what the voices told me to say anyway --- I see fail everywhere, and it's like they don't even know they're failing ---

Still waiting to see the day that some ones cap runs dry and they pop out of warp in a planet/moon/station :)

You can do that now. You get bumped away from the planet with a horrendous speed, as collision calculations are apparently the same as for ships. When you put a planet mass in it, you get a bump speed of thousands of km/sec.
All it takes is a bookmark in the vicinity or inside the planet - you can make that when warping through it or flying towards it in fast ship for some time.

CCP could just program it so that if you are going to warp through some random planet...autopilot has you warp to 1 (ONE) beacon on the side, then on to next destination...I understand how a series could get very annoying...
If you are on self pilot...I dunno, maybe your warp bubble curves slightly....maybe take like 10% shield damage or something simple, but enough to make you possibly pay attention in the future.
I myself hate warping to something to see the planet split in half - absolutely destroys the graphical experience. And warping through the station is just as bad...any fix to warp through station though could be quite annoying especially when trying to avoid the 5 BS's opening fire on you once you are no long invulnerable.
