Hello all, IÆm here hoping for some advice, I can be considered an EVE newbie so keep that in mind. That said IÆm a semi intelligent and experienced player of online games so I basic concepts will be understandable for me.
Right now IÆm amarr Special Forces pilot with little over 6m points trained. This may sound like IÆm more experienced then I am though since most of my game time has been in ôtraining modeö I more or less started with selling a few game time cards to get some cash and then went into training playing another game. Since I didnÆt have all that much experience with the game at my training may seems a bit strange. What I did was to pick up an amarr ship that I thought looked interesting in EVEMON and followed that guide. This means I probably missing some skills to use the ship well though since I have the bare minimum to fly them. So here I am now, I still expect to train for about another month or so before I get back to playing the game. Think IÆm getting close to flying heavy assault btw and I have the amarr light laser special skill (forget the name now)
What IÆm hoping to get now is some suggestions of ships that I should start with, I want to be able to fight a little (PvP) but itÆs not my main focus. Although I still have something like 400m IÆm guessing I also need to be able to lose a few ships learning
If I was to make up a ship id like one that can keep me alive while exploring dangerous parts of the galaxy, cloak, speed or other secret ways? I would also like to hurt some ships if needed
So ship and general suggestion of types of gear?

First mistake was to go into training mode. Yes, it good to train learning, but not to 5/5. 3/0 for the basics is enough. Then train further when you know you want to train for BS (or something like that).
Go fly some missions. Join FW. Do something in EvE. You can have 73m skillpoints and still lose to a 6m SP toon. Specializing is a good way to go to be competitive. I know of one guy, who could fly frigates, use MWD and a scrambler. He joined a 0.0 alliance with only those skills and contributed greatly to battles as scout and tackler.
So my advice is, stop looking at the SP and start playing the game. |

yeah, don't believe what you read on the forums, its not all about the SP. you don't need to go into training mode. join FW (factional warfare), get a few cheap ships and experience the game. you need to lose quite a few of them. then see what aspect you like, speed, tank, gank, maybe join a corp, and so on...
ow, do some reading before you chose a side in FW |

For amarr... curse is a good ship, if you've got the drone skills. Pilgrim is like the curse, but has weaker combat bonus and can fit a covops cloak. Sacrelidge is a great tanking ship, but uses missiles 'stead of guns. Zeolot is the machinegunner of the amarr HAC's, and that's pretty well rounded. The guardian is a support ship, but if you've got a fleet your allies will love you if you can use it well. I forgot what the HIC was, but I do remember it's a great tanking ship, but not too good in actual combat. |

Any advice someone can give you is going to be useless unless you actually play eve. This isn't wow or eq2 where theres virtually nothing to learn to pvp or make stuff.
Your best bet is to learn what the various classes of ships are good for. Learn how to tackle using a t1 frigate with t1 gear. Learn how to set up a decent cruiser. Look into getting some EW skill, both SP and experience.
ONce you get an idea of what ships are good for what you can start to really plot your course in skill training. EVEMON and EFT are good tools to help keep you on track. Checking out sites like battleclinic and other community sites will give a look at how others fit their ships. Analyze them and look to making your own set ups with what you've learned from others.
TALK To people in game. Theres a lot of rude players, otheres that are just to damn busy to even consider talking to someone they know. Then theres people that are on personal downtime, just relaxing and sorting stuff out and have plenty of time to chat up a storm with another player, especially a newbie.
Figure out how you want to make isk, if you go into pvp you'll need income to keep those ships replaced ,fitted and insured. For beginners its basically "mining and industry" or "missions/ratting". If you go with mining you'll want to skill for a barge. If your going for missions your going to want to work your way up to a BS+social skills to work the agents for maximum isk. if your ratting, a BC will do in lowsec but 0.0 its best to have a bs.
Once you figure out what kind of ships you like, what you want to do in game and how you will make your isk, you can really start learning how to play eve, not just skilltrain. |

Hmmm.
To be honest it's hard to know exactly what you want to train in the long term without trying stuff out though. But since you asked:
I'd say to fill in the gaps. Just being able to sit in the ship isn't really enough. Make sure your plan includes T2 guns, tank, cap rechargers, speed modules etc.
Check the skills forum. There's probably a list somewhere. You definitely want Engineering, Mechanic, Electronics to 5. These are basic skills that let you fit your ship properly.
Capacitor skills (Energy Management, Energy Systems Operation) are very important too (especially for Amarrrr).
Navigation skills help you not lose your investment. Some of them affect align time (how quickly your ship goes into warp) for example. Navigation, Acceleration Control and Evasive Manouvering are the ones that spring to mind.
Weapon skills, I'd go through the Gunnery section in EVEMON and look at the support skills (stuff like Controlled Bursts). They're not required for T2 gear but you should add them to your plan anyway. Advanced Weapons Upgrades is probably a good choice too. If you're going for a Zealot (The heavy assault ship with lasers) I'd say to go for T2 Pulse Lasers first.
I think you could easily put together a month or three's training out of all that.
Quote: If I was to make up a ship id like one that can keep me alive while exploring dangerous parts of the galaxy, cloak, speed or other secret ways? I would also like to hurt some ships if needed
If you want to add another shiptype in there a Battlecruiser for missions would use most of the same skills and modules as a Heavy Assault Ship (generally referred to as HACs btw - Heavy Assault Cruisers). Battlecruisers can be insured and are cheaper than Heavy Assault Ships to begin with so ****ing up and losing one will hurt less.
What I'd do is try and work out a months training that gets you into a decent Tech I cruiser or battlecruiser (the Harbinger is probably the one you want) and then learn to do some missions.
EVEMon lets you give your training priorities so use that feature (short term plan priority one, medium term priority two etc.) |

just a note that these ships are no good with 6 mil sp and no actual playing experience need about 7-8 mil sp in support skills (read about 6 months training) and flying/losing a few before you'll learn how to be a good pod pilot with these

One thing to bear in mind is that you will lose ships.
Therefore, it's probably a good idea to fly relatively cheap ships while you're learning the ropes. |

Edited by: Warioc NazGhoul on 20/08/2008 14:37:51 Thanks for the comments so far, i understand that i should play a bit more before i know what to play but some starting suggestions are always nice. I did downplay my actual in game experience a bit, I did the questing or ôrattelingö for a living at start, giving me a 0.4 security status if that means anything.
I am going to focus on PvE rattleing for a while but since I donÆt think industrial will work for me I think I may have to take on some PvP eventually. I donÆt know anything about the FW yet since I havenÆt played at all since that was added.
I learned to fly the interceptor and also I think T2 cruiser, could they be a good start or will I be eaten alive by evil motherships? I never been in anything below 0.4 sec status space so no ide how bad it is, do hear horror stories though

It's called "Ratting" and EVE has missions, not magical quests
An intie might not be a horrible choice for PVP actually depending on what skills you have to go with it. For Gallente a frigate is kind of similar but worse. I'm not familiar with the Amarr inties so I don't know how solo-able they are though.
A HAC is a poor first choice because they're 100m a pop and I guarantee you that you'll be losing a few ships. Another thing to note is that the bigger the ship the quicker it is to lock onto and the slower it is to warp.
In low sec people generally gate camp with biggish ships. The bigger the ship the longer it's lock time. Since no ship makes you immune to getting popped once you've gotten webbed and scrammed etc. being able to run away is probably going to = more survivability to begin with. |

Mission Running and Beltratting, dooing Encounters or scan for bigger things isn¦t bad, but gets booring with the time. But in the beginning you need some cash and time to get some basic skills up, so not a bad decision.
Yeah the evil Mothership kills them all. Nah, Low Sec and 0.0 isn¦t this bad, you simply have to let loose about Ships and Assets and accept that you will loose them at some point, it is a game afterall. Some people like to say Low Sec is where the Game starts to get interesting(since PVP starts right here, War Decs in high sec beside).
Interceptors are not that bad and often needet(at least in 0.0 heavy used), you should start with T1 Frigs or Cruisers(keep it cheap in the beginning since you will loose some ships for shure).
You can go FW, Low Sec PVP or joining a 0.0 Corp for PVP there, there are lots of options, for anybody willing to see what eve is all about. |
