Edited by: Somal Thunder on 20/08/2008 18:43:38 Edited by: Somal Thunder on 20/08/2008 18:41:56 I had this idea, there should be a feature where you can pick from a drop down box "Shield" "Armor" "Structure" or "None" and a slider from 0% to 100%. If you pick "Shield" and "35%" Aura will say "Low Shield" when your shield reaches 35%... Idea?
Maybe you should even be able to make it alert you with sound even when sound is disabled, seeing as how you'd probably only need this feature if you have sound disabled and don't notice yourself being shot at by ravenous NPC rats. |

I think this is a fair idea.
As long as it's out the way in options and off by default.

I don't see how this feature is in any way handy, you can read a shield/armor/structure read-out in percentage and this warning message would probably get placed near the visual read-out which you can look at anyways.
Redundant, and there are more pressing matters. |

audio alerts is much more effective than visual ones.

How could you not notice the gray turning into bright red o nthe bottom of your screen? I don't think blind people play this game. |

Honestly when I'm ratting I tend to watch 2 things, Local and TV. Sometimes I drift off into TV and notice my shields are down to 20% and get a bit of a shock. On a 22" widescreen with 3 other screens surrounding you, realizing little details like color changes really gets overestimated.
Edit: And you say blind people don't play this game, but colorblind people do. |

If you need an alert sound to remind you to switch back to the game, then something is wrong with the game that shouldn't be fixed by adding an alert sound. |

It's still easily distuinguishable, and I play on a 22" with two other screens BEHIND me. And if you're colorblind, and want to play this game, you would want to pay more attention than a normal color-seeing person. |

The whole suggestion sounds like something designed to make the life of macro miners (and the people who write the scripts for them) easier.
If you can't be arsed to pay enough attention to the game to notice when your ship is being shot at, it might be time to play something else. |

Wha!? I'm being attacked!? But how can I tell if I'm dying, since I'm colorblind as well as clueless.
It looks as though the lightly shaded bar has become mostly dark shaded... AND my ship is on fire.
If only the game could tell me "DUMB ASS! YOU'RE DYING!" before I pull my head outta my ass and play the game I'm paying for monthly...

Well I for one think this idea would be useful but mostly for PvP. There's a lot going on in PvP and it helps to get some audio tones to tell you where your attention needs to be focused quickly.
This really should be an easy feature to implement anyways and I'm always kind of surprised it's not already in place. |

I just synthesize my own sounds in this case.
Low shield = me saying "looool im an armor tanker" low armor = me saying "TANK TANK TANK" low structure = me saying "JUMP JUMP JUMP MF'ER JUMPPPPP"
Who wants some boring "low shield" announcement when my audio announcements are totally better.

Can I borrow those, sounds liek a class idea.
We can all see that CCP is trying to make the game more accessible to new players, like installign the awful welcome screen on every window. But as I am a 2 year old player and find that annoying doesn't mean it wouldn't be useful.
And in PVP it is very easy to forget to look at the readouts as often as one would like with so much going on. I don't think that it should be there for afk mission runners. If they get blown up they deserve it. But to make the game more accessible to colour blind people, stupid people(they are allowed to play you know) and newbs it would be a great addition. |

I see a lot of sarcasm about this suggestion, but I think it's a good one. I've wished for it myself. I don't know about anyone else, but when I'm in a, uh, target-rich environment, sometimes I get so hyperfocused on targeting and firing I simply forget to look at my visuals way down the bottom of the screen. An audio warning would be a valuable help.
(Of course, I'll observe that targeting and firing might not consume so much of my attention if it were possible to group weapons and activate/deactivate them as a group, and if it didn't take them so blasted long to deactivate after the current target explodes. My GOD, EVE desperately needs better fire-control.) |

I know what you mean by the sarcasm. If you can't say something constructive then don't say anything at all.
On the subject again, virtually every system in the world has an audio warning, especially things that can explode. It would also add to the drama of the situation.
but you are right, EVE needs better fire control. Start your own thread on that. |

I guess something may be "wrong" with the game as you say, if it were a 100% action all the time game. But it's not, there are many empty moments where nothing is happening, in most activities in Eve.
Maybe if you use just one account at a time, the visuals are enough, but an (or many) audio warning would be *really* useful for multi-accounting.

Probably not, but then again you don't have to be blind to have a visual impediment.
Sadly I am one of those people. While I'm not blind by any means, I can not move my eyes around the screen very fast and maintain focus.
Something that I noticed when coming to Eve was how bad the sound in the game is. While its a different type of game, consider UT2004. Every weapon change, shot, footstep, jump, dodge, ammo colection, pickup...ect. has a corresponding sound. I know some smartarse is going to comment on how its a FPS, but the game itself is an excellent example of good sound use.
Next time you're in a battle in Eve listen to the sounds that are present - they are fairly minimal. Locking, firing and the main two that you will hear. Ideally every action that a player takes against another should have a sound, or the very least the choice of assigning one.
Low S/A/H sounds are a great idea. You could include Cap and ammo too come to think of it and any other expendable modules. I also wondered why there is no sound notification built into eve for people leaving rooms / friends coming online....heck, even people entering local (yeah go on, flame me)
The sound needs serious additions. Not just because people are lazy, but its a waste to rely primarily on one of our five senses. And of course, there are people who don't have the standard of vision the majority of the population does. You don't realise how important all your senses are until you can't rely on one. |

Why would it cause lag? It would be handled by the client, the information needed is already sent from the server. |

If I'm already experiencing graphical lag, why would I want another thing to bog my system down?
Not worth it when you already have graphical displays for these things. |

Graphical lag? If your computer can't handle sound, then you can keep it turned off, no?
I don't have any graphical lag, even with several clients, so I would make great use of this feature, and it would most certainly be worth it.
I'm a bit surprised by the many nay sayers here, for a feature that should be very easy to implement, and which would be entirely optional to use. What's the deal, why the opposition? |

Umm...
1) Play with Classic instead of Premium graphics.
2) Get a new computer.

No matter what change you might propose or suggestion you might make here you'll immediately hear from a bunch (often the same bunch) of people telling you why it and you are stupid. Welcome to the Eve forums.

im saying no, not because its a bad idea, but because its a waste of the devs time. as i said, theres a huge bar down the bottom, its easy to see. - PvPers always say "GB2WoW". the message is that EVE is hard, and people just need to deal with it. wasn't it funny how when nano's started making it hard for *them*, that all went out the window? |

Not when you have other windows active.
Besides, I loved the "*****ing Betty" that Mechwarrior games had, it greatly increased sense of alarm and thus immersion/rush.
