Quote: The SCI FI Channel is calling it quits with Stargate Atlantis -- or at least in its current format -- the network confirmed in a press release today. The spin-off series will conclude in January with the current, fifth season, and will be followed with a 2-hour Atlantis movie (story).
Despite the cancellation, series creator Brad Wright tells GateWorld that, looking ahead, the Stargate franchise is as strong as it has ever been.
SCI FI will have the exclusive worldwide television premiere of the movie, which MGM will subsequently release on DVD. The movie does not yet have a title.
Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie, executive producers and showrunners on Atlantis for its final two seasons, will pen the film.
"We're excited to tell Atlantis stories on a bigger canvas," series creators Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper said. "The successes of the two original Stargate DTV movies The Ark of Truth and Continuum have shown us the opportunities that the movie format offers. We have plans for both SG-1 and Atlantis to remain vital as we expand the franchise."
"We share in the producers' enthusiasm to move forward in this direction and we look forward to a strong and continued relationship on Stargate Atlantis in this new format," said Thomas Vitale, SCI FI's Senior Vice President Programming & Original Movies.
"Enemy At the Gate" will be the 100th and final episode of the series, and will air in January.
"One hundred episodes is the goal of every writer-producer," Wright told GateWorld exclusively. "To have achieved that with a spin-off series is amazing. And like SG-1, I don't feel as though anything is coming to an end with Atlantis -- it's just evolving. Ark of Truth and Continuum were hugely satisfying creatively for everyone involved precisely because they were movies, and we have no intention of stopping there."
Stargate Atlantis was SCI FI's highest rated premiere ever when it debuted on July 16, 2004. The success of those two films not only helps the cast, crew, and fans of Atlantis see a light at the end of the cancellation tunnel, but has also begun to redefine what "cancelled" means. In the future, more television series may give way to direct-to-DVD movies, as a way of keeping the adventure going.
"Rob and I have spent several years biting our finger nails over the prospect of renewal, but you've got to respect both MGM and SCI FI for giving us the opportunity to continue both Atlantis and SG-1 in a series of movies," Wright told GateWorld. "This is nothing to complain about -- it's something to look forward to.
"Keep in mind that Stargate Worlds, the huge online game is just around the corner, and with the prospect of another Stargate television series also on the horizon, the franchise is really as strong as it has ever been."

Well this sucks, SGA was the only non-crappy show on Sci-fi now, everything else has shoddy production quality or just a downright crappy plot to begin with. Some people have started a petition but I doubt that it will do much. I will link it tomorrow after the site is back up. Contrary to hat that article says it is actually MGM that pulled the plug not the Sci-fi channel. So anyone else ****ed about this?

Well this sucks. Atlantis was the only thing good after SG-1 left.
What are they thinking?

A few weeks back I started watching it and have loved it, so it sucks to hear this.
Especially since I just finished watching an episode 30 seconds ago...
At least there's still BSG in January.

That really sucks :(
I enjoyed the SG series, having seen the original movie, the 10 SG-1 series and no half-way through the 5th SGA season. I wonder what they meant about the new spinoff, will it be like the SG series but with a different universe/cast?
BSG is also ending in January, but unlike SGA it had to come to a logical conclusion.

Edited by: Xen Gin on 25/08/2008 03:54:48 MGM decided that they could make more money from straight to DVD movies, rather than pay actors for a 20 episode run.
So now they green lighted Stargate Universe with Atlantis out the way. Universe will also be geared to appeal to a "Younger Target Audience".
Last weeks episode, showed that Atlantis and the Actors have incredible talent. David Hewlett should get an Emmy or something for last week performance.

Sheppard had Sunglasses. So it has to be for even younger than that! The Stargate will probably be made out of Lego or something (Which would be really cool if some actually built that, but not in a TV show!).

as far as they have told the public it will have to do with an unmanned ship that flies far before a manned anchent one, and the unmanned one seeds uninhabeted galaxys with a stargate network,

Aye it's shit that SG: Atlantis has been cancelled as I think it's far better than SG1 ever was, and I really liked SG1 before Jack left.
But this is typical of TV channels now, it looks like reality shows and other stuff cheaper to make are what people want. Actually a line from Paul Weller's (The Jam) song Going Underground about sums it up for me

How long will this incommunicado with the SGC last? A year like Atlantis?
Come on, the trapped out there billions of miles from home with no way back is done to death.

To be honest... im not that bummed. Atlantis, even though it is a great show, has been wandering sence day one. Lets look at the facts.
1. We were introduced to the Wraith, while an interesting enemy, we havent actually delved into their origins or why they were allowed to flurish until the ancients got their asses kicked. And lets be honest, there the scifi equal to vampires, an ever growing cliche. Furthermore, I recall in the first or second season, the idea of meeting an ancient was a big thing for the team, then they meet several acended ancients and a crew full of arogent SOB's where as in SG-1, the Ancients WERE THE GATE BUILDERS! They were this ultra mysterous race that worked from the background until towards the end.
2. Sence its airing, the show has lost/replaced several actors/actresses. Though this gives atlantis the feeling of a hostile enviroment, it makes it hard to really grow to like a character. Will Ronin be killed off next week? will Carson be cloned? Who knows as it seems to be that they lose an actor a season.
3. Too much was reused from SG-1. Replicators, Wraith worshipers, alien doppleganers, robotic clones of the team, entire storylines reframed for atlantis, on and on. When your a spin off of a show that ran for 10 years, your hard pressed to find something new.
4. There was no progress for the story. The team was in Atleantis for nearly 5 years and no big win or lose in the war with the wraith. The replicators were quickly axed shortly after their discovery (they shouldnt have even been introduced in my opinion) and so forth.
5. Unlike SG-1 where you had one "primary" enemy such as Apophis, Sokar, Anubis and Baal, you just have "The Wraith". This goes back to the no progress for the story. In that the team defeated an enemy it was the closing of a chapter but for atlantis its been like a reaaaaly long chapter 1.
Hopefully Universe will be fresh enough and smart enough to take the lessons learned from both serise and not allow themselves to fall into any traps. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:
Players who post are like stars, there are bright ones and those who are dim.

Wasn't this ganked by MGM before? I remember it was all the rage and tons of people wanted it and then it was stalled. Only then I saw it come back - I thought it was in the clear. Too bad, it could've been cool.
