I'm not sure how the internal servers handle mails, but would it be difficult to create a POP server or something close to it that would allow us to pick up our eve mail externally? Maybe even send it externally?
Character name (spaces can be _'s) @ Eve-online.com or something like that? And have a filter so that only other eve-online.com addresses can send to it. Seems easy enough but implementing it with the current system would be tough, although exporting / importing the mail from the database could be the bulk of the issue.

External retrieval isn't all that great an idea either, as it opens the door to some serious metagaming... allowing eve-mails outside the game means taking those communications out of the game framework, making them far easier to manipulate and duplicate.
In short, too many security liabilities, in my opinion to be viable.

The spamming would be about as bad as it is now, and this time even your spam filter could be applied to the mails to weed out the isk sellers even easier.
I'm not too sure how it would be much different than reading mails in game. The only application it would allow would be to open up a "Don't log in, they're still camping your safespot" which could just as easily be sent over an IM client or phone.

It would be ok, as long as this address would be read only out of game. Ie you would still need to send your EVE-Mails by logging into your account and doing the proper things in game.

A read only IMAP accessible address would be perfect, allowing you to read eve-mails on the go.
It is important it is read only though.

I can definately accept read-only as part of the proposal since the main reason i suggested it would be to allow another method of contacting people who aren't in game.
Does anyone know how the eve database works with mails and whether this would be an easy implementation?

Not sure how eaxtly the EVE mail system works, but it must be 100% self made. Otherwise there would not be this annoying email size limit. This can only come from a lazy programmer who wanted to have the size static so that he does not have to care about any dynamics If one of my colleagues would show an implementation like this in a code review, he would probably get fired!
So to add features like you ask for they probably need to kick this self made stuff out and use standard libraries/packages for that. And then we could see nice features like multiple addresses, CC, mail forwarding, auto reply, ... Oh wait these are not features... these are basic standards... Shame on CCP for that mail implementation!

Edited by: Anaalys Fluuterby on 27/08/2008 19:25:04 It isn't a "email" system, its more like a glorified bulletin board. Just some webpages and a database link.
And this isn't going to happen. First because of spam, second because its a non-critical re-write, third because the Devs have stated over and over they want us to log into the game (which is why we can't alter training from our account page and don't have training ques).
At best you might get them to do an API export periodically. -------------------------------------------------

Not it isn't, people should be encouraged to get out in low sec space, but never forced to do so.

I have to say the size limitation on eve mails is frankly obseanly low - eve is a complex game and a lot of information has to pass around to make things happen, frankly Im fed up of having to send multipal eve mails to get the infomation I want out. I dont know the tech but whats more demanding on the system multipal mails or more text field? |

Things I need: 1) Sent mail box 2) Autoorganise by name, date recieved, subject, etc. Organising by Read/Unread is horrible when you've got an inbox as full as mine, especially if I need to go back and find an old evemail without remembering exactly who sent it. I'd be happy with just those two.
Things that would be nice: 1) OOG IMAP, even with read-only functionality 2) Ablity to export evemails 3) Removal of size limit
Not too much to ask for, is it? ____________________
