Just curious on various opinions of the everyone here.....
I remember a while ago someone posted a link to an MMO under development that looked rather sexah.. dammed if I can find it...
My opinion? Currently there is not one online MMO in Eve's genre that can rival it, even with the lagmonster and assorted warts / bugs. Which is why many of us stay, complain bitterly.... then shut up and start the next skill training cycle..

There are a few space type MMOs in development now, Jumpgate Evolution, the Star Trek one, and another I can't remember the name of atm. I can't see any of them offering what EVE does though.

Anything that could compete with EVE would compete not because it was bug free and lag free, but because it had an equal or better implementation of EVE's core concept. -

As far as 'sci fi' MMO's, there are a bunch that are in development, and then there's SWG and Tabula Rasa, even PlanetSide.
Space MMO's are few and far between, and it looks like Jumpgate Evolution, Infinity, Black Prophecy, Earthrise, Universe Online ... all in development, many in pre-Alpha stages.
Then there's the mainstream ones that are getting a lot of hype (and in my opinion, going to come out the worse for wear because of it), such as Stargate Worlds or Star Trek Online.
Don't forget the good sci-fi FPS's, such as Agency or Huxley.
Those are the one's I've been tracking. Most are either avatar oriented (Stargate, Huxley, SWG, etc), or space oriented.
From the worlds, however, none of them seem to be as ambitious as CCP. Lots are talking of using sharding and instances, many will have no combat PvP at all (and thus, no player-run game mechanics). Those that do are often separating their game worlds either into PvP and PvE servers, or sharding the individual worlds into 'PvP and PvE' zones.
I'll try each in turn. I don't think a few will ever make it to market. I expect to see Stargate Worlds, and StarTrek, Huxley and Jumpgate Evolution, but I seriously doubt the others will make it out of development.
But I don't think any of them will 'compete' with EvE, any more than WoW competes with EvE. EvE is one of a kind at the moment, and all the new developments seem to by trying to mimic WoW, which is a failure from the start. But we'll see.

Im no star trek fan, however their Star Trek Online MMO has some neat features i only wish Eve had. My two favorites would be both a ground game plus combat and an in bridge view providing a more personal feel to the ship you fly. |

IŠve seen Jumpgate Evolution at the GamesConvention in Leipzig and its nowhere near EvE. Joystick/Mouse-Controled flight, xp for killing stuff, mission for more xp. Classic grind, but looking nice. Might be nice break from EvE but most certainly nothing for a longer period of time.

Darkspace is one, but with around 5 players on at any time that game is pretty much dead.
It was fun setting four tractor beams into reverse, cloaking up behind someone and pushing them right into the planet they were building >:)

Darkspace was kind of fun, but either always empty or lacking serious balance, I was sad the day UGTO torp cruisers got nerfed, even worse when their dreads' alpha strike took the same path ... Funny but not worth the monthly fee honnestly. |

I used to play that game a ton a long time ago, but .. I dunno, it died off pretty fast. Had a pretty step initial learning curve though, I can see why new players were pretty put off.

Played quite a lot too, grinding here and there up to fleet admiral, until you get the big mushroom of planetary attack :) I enjoyed the cloud bombing part a lot and the "master of orion"ish planet building thingy. |

You know, if you want to get right down to it, the fact that EvE is still around is a bit surprising.
For instance, so many players don't want to be captains, but want to be pilots. Fighter pilots, dog fights, missiles away and controlling the ship with that stick between their legs, that sort of thing.
Then there's the 'pod' part. Man, the number of people who can't wrap their mind around this concept is outstanding. Many still think the pod is an escape pod, while others think the only way you can get out of your pod is if you die.
There's the whole size of the universe. This puts many off. Taking half an hour or more to go from one end of the game world to another is so lame to them.
And the death! OMGWTFBBQ! You mean you can't just respawn?!?! Other games' developers have been stoned for even *suggesting* corpse retrieval, and CCP flat out says 'if you lose, you lose'.
Lord help us all, let's not forget scamming. This game allows CRIME! And doesn't ban that evil little player for it?!? What kind of self respecting company in their right mind would implement a virtual world and not provide the literal deification of 'good guys get rewarded, bad guy suffer in hell'?!?
To be honest, it's surprising this game is still around five years later. It's even more surprising that it has more players five years after release than it did at any other point in time. And loe and behold, it's even steadily rising to the forefront of ALL MMO's, foreign and domestic, western or eastern markets.
What the hell is this world coming to? In the game development community, which is a witch hunt of pro-Christian hate groups and political dissension, how in the world has EvE even survived?

lots of folks have high hopes for jumpgate, but personally after the failboat that was auto assualt, and the first jumpgates almost insane lack of depth (or any theame park type content) i really cant see netdevil doing anything serious, if eve looses half its subs to jumpgate it would only be for a month or 2 unless they have improved the game a massive amount, but from what i am told its just jumpgate with a new gui and slightly revised flight mechanics.

I think it's the fact that the normal video game development cycle breaks down when applied to MMOs.
Normally it's..
1) See what #1 guy is doing 2) Copy his game only in a different setting and with better of whatever made it #1 and maybe a couple new things 3) Go back to #1
Unfortunately MMOs aren't like normal games where people buy them, play them for a month, and then set them down, never to be played again. Good MMOs go on for a long, long time (EQ1 is *still* going, for cripesakes) and people become very vested in their characters and to get them to put down their current MMO for something new, it has to be clearly, totally, and inargueably better, and for those who've gotten burned out and quit, the same still applies, otherwise why should they pick it up when they can just go back to the game they left, already know well, and already have at least one advanced character on?
But the game companies, for the most part, don't get this (yet) so they continue trying to out-WoW WoW, which just isn't going to give them the mind-boggling sub numbers these people are looking for. I think the future of the genre is more niche games like Eve, that don't try to appeal to everyone but retain their own loyal following.
Eve continues to grow because most people (still) haven't heard of it, and it offers an experience that, regardless of how one may feel about what CCP is currently doing, is most definitely *not* WoW. So people come, they try it, some stay, most don't, but those that stay tend to stay for a long time, much longer than most people in WoW (from my experience from my own days there) ---

The problem for Eve is that someone only has to come along and do something similar in terms of open ended gameplay and pvp emphasis and it'll take a lot of ppl away. Just the fact that it is fresh and new and doesn't have the baggage Eve does, it could probably get away without even being sci-fi or set in space so long as it isn't a fantasy MMO (with all the stigma, rival mmo's and stereotypes attached)
_______ People like that don't have friends just temporary common interests.

Maybe, maybe not. EvEs skill system is of a kind, that you can't powerlevel here. People literally invested years of training in this game. If you feel some kind of value in your accomplishments in an MMO its harder to leave. If its easy to accomplish stuff, the felt value of those accomplishments drops, to a point where you can feel playing an MMO is worthless, because your accomplishments dont matter... like SWG for example.
Never underestimate the build up feeling of Value in MMOs. It are not only the friends that make people return, but mostly the assets. ---

this.
I recruit my students every phase to play EVE because they haven't heard it and I alwasy show them videos and trailers and they try the free trial. Most are dumb and can't graps the gameplay. But some get addicted. CCP should gibve me ISK for all the referrals I give them.

Like you don't have enough ISK already...
When EVE was in the development it was so far and above better than everything else at the time that it was a winner from the beginning. Watching the trailers back in 2001 put me in awe at the time and dissapointed somewhat since my comp at the time would never be able to run it.
There just isn't anything else out there that has that. Black Prophecy, JGE, Infinity, STO all look like steps back compared to EVE atm, which at it's time of release was a huge leap forward.

the black prophecy vids and stuff review from mmosite does sound very interesting.

Game Features
Realtime Action
Fighters, carries and other capital ships engage in spacebattles of epic proportions, fought out between up to 300 players seeking fame, power, resources and the control over strategically important space stations.
Clan Space Stations
Clans can acquire their own space stations and modify them with new modules and functions to fit their needs.
seems similar :)
I hope that is a limit on players in an area when they mention 300, would really help lag issues.
but does remind me of what Anarchy Online did where they would cap the amount in a zone and bounce anyone off the zone wall when population was exceeded which was annoying though so I can see it both ways as good and bad. -----------------------

Ships in Eve have no bridge.
Eve will eventually have ground-based stuff. Walking around in stations is coming first.

EvE is different, in that it doesn't force you to do anything. Many of the options are really bad, like mining, mission running, POS support, transporting goods, etc. but you can always choose not to do them. It even allows you the option of paying for in-game stuff in cash, which to my knowledge no other mainstream game does, yet.
That, plus as someone said the feeling of investment you have in your 40m sp toon is what keeps people here. I would gladly jump to a better game that was equally open-ended and allowed true character growth, but so far there isn't one.
The only one that looks like it might be close is Star Trek online. But depending how closely they try and adapt the universe it could go horribly wrong.
