Indeed Slade, indeed.
Best quote I have heard recently? "The United States doesn't hate everybody else, we ARE everybody else!"
If you don't understand that, you need to study a bit of US history.

lol I knew what the answer was going to be.
So there will be Irish Americans, Italian Americans, Mexican Americans, Cuban Americans, African Americans and various other Americans turning up. Just pulling your leg.
I've been to the US a lot the racial divides there are pretty obvious.
True America has a diverse population as the news has reported recently the vast amount of Americans won't be white soon. Which being on a continent whose indeigenous people aren't white its not really a surprise.
But the player base is supposedly split equally between the US and Europe at the moment. So that gives a clue, 90% of people that turn upto a fanfest in the US will live in the USA. Because of Iceland being the place it is and Europe being diverse by the fact its not one country more diverse people turn up.
Still no reason not to have two events. If you have an alternating event Americans don't make one and the Europeans don't make the other not really a bloody solution is it lol. So we all lose out. Why not have two and we all turn up to one.

Well he does have a small point. Iceland is part of the EU's open-borders scheme, which means every one of the 100's of millions of people in Europe can travel there without getting a Visa. Its far more difficult for Europeans to get Visas to travel to America.
If it were held in America, a lot of Europeans would find it more difficult, as well as face an off-putting 10+ hour flight. Iceland is sorta the halfway point ------

Well right now, Iceland is more difficult for Americans to get to. Its closer to Europe than the US by far, plus theres no treaties or open border policies that the US has that can be taken advantage of.
Even though Iceland is a neutral location, Having an event in US/UK would make fans more entusiactic, thus increasing exposure which = MONEY!!!
If you have it in Iceland one year, US the next year, UK the following year, no one would be left out. Plus if it is held in UK, thats still europe and a 21/2 hour flight for europeans.
Plus it wouldn't hurt at all. Everyone would have thier turn. Why did CCP open an Atlanta Location? Surely not just to develop more games.
P.S. And if you look at a map, Iceland it wayyyyy closer to Europe Than the US. Not to mention your name may be on a no fly list. lol

It's not exactly like going next door for Americans to come to Iceland either.
He's also entirely missing the point about it being damn expensive and time consuming to fly all the way to Iceland. Additionally, his point about it being "more diverse" in Europe is just bull hockey. We have literally EVERY Ethnic group on the Planet (except maybe some remote indigenous groups) living here in the U.S.
We are a nation of Immigrants, everybody here came here from somewhere else. (Including "Native" Americans, as their people originally came across the Bering Land Bridge waaaaay back in time, but well AFTER Europe and Asia were fully populated.) So it is literally NOT POSSIBLE for a fan fest in Europe to have a more diverse Ethnic makeup than one in America.
Keep in mind, we aren't asking that Fan Fest move PERMANENTLY to the U.S., merely that it oscillate back and forth from Iceland to the US and back. This would allow each player base, Euro and Americas, to have a shot at an inexpensive Fan Fest to attend.
So stop trying to be so exclusionary you Euro types. We Americans want some love too. Tactical Logistics using the last T1 Frigate hull!

I'd just be happy if fanfest didn't clash with Whitby Goth Weekend.
however, predominantly male gamers, even with CCP's slightly older average age of player still threatens us with with the inherent problem of obese unwashed geeks talking about their characters...
Or... I could go to Whitby, get utterly ratarsed in the company of pretty goths in corsets and fishnets in the Elsie, blow all the money it'd cost to get to Iceland on alcohol and frock coats, listen to great bands, go half deaf, dance to obscenely bad 80's cheese at a club hotter than lucifer's crotch on the sunday evening, before crawling back to a cosy bed with a gorgeous and wonderfully elegant silver-haired lady...
Hrm. let me think.... what a tough choice. see you when you change the schedule, CCP. :)

Erm... yes? this little thing called their merger with white wolf and the WOD mmo? that's to develop more games, and in doing so, make new products, and profit. CCP is a business, not a charity.

How about rotate it between Atlanta, Reykjavik and London [for Tranquility ] on a tri-annual basis?
Yanks get one, Both sides of the Atlantic get one and then Europe gets one.

evefest can be held in a different city each year. new york, dublin, london, las vegas etc etc etc ------------------------------ of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most |

Wrong again sir, if we share we both win with a one year separation. Continue the old way and our side looses yearly. But as I said before if it was consistantly switched to say the UK, I might be able to swing a trip. Iceland, no time soon, and when I do, yall will not be able to meet the drunken rowdy version of me, that is the most fun version of me , since I will not be able to afford drinkage

Edited by: Ademaro Imre on 28/08/2008 20:24:16 Edited by: Ademaro Imre on 28/08/2008 20:21:29 This is not about the US, it also includes all the Canadian players, and whatever amount of Mexican players there are.
Despite Captian Kirk's travels on the Starship Enterprise, the Priceline Negotiator was unable to find me any flights from New York to Iceland.
If I book NOW using Orbitz.com (which does find good prices), for the 2nd weekend in July 2009 (the furtherest out it will let me), a round cost ticket will cost about $910 whether I return on a Sunday or Monday.
Plus any hotel costs once at the Fanfest, which will be extra days for US travelers as many of the flights I looked at are overnight flights and are arriving at 5-7AM (there is no way I can sleep on an an airplane in uncomfortable seats), so that Icelandair can takes its departing passengers out at more convenient times.
New York: $910 Dallas: $1150 Los Angeles: $1250 Chicago: $1100
With prices like this, turn out from American and Canadian players will always be low. The prices above can get me a week long beach front condo at any decent shore/tourist city on the east coast of the US.
Having concurrent fanfest parties in different cities around the globe is what - to hard to do?

Going to the US, a huge hazzle for anyone not american. Sorry, but as long as the department for homeland defence and the US department of foreign affairs insist on being the biggest nitpicking idiots on the planet when it comes to allowing people "easy" access to the US it is just not going to happen.
For all americans, are you aware of HOW many forms and papers i had to fill out and sign when i applied for a turist visa? And I am from Sweden, one of the few countries in the world where one can actually get visas to the USA with very little hassle. And from 2009 and onward one has to apply for a ESTA before going to the US.
Summa summarum:
US citizens going to Iceland, while "expensive", fairly simple.
EU citizens going to the US, expensive, and "difficult".
Non-EU citizens going to the US, riiiiight... it lies within the realms of possibilty atleast...

it seems to me that the developers / peopel who run the game are just being stubborn and lazy, insisting on holding fanfest in ... Iceland every year. if they were serious about promoting eve, they would have it in the US or something. (i'm from the UK, and even I can see that it would benefit more people if it was in the US)

Yeah!
I mean, it could never be the exorbitant cost of airfare for people who may be on limited budgets, the difficulty in getting a travel visa in a post 9/11 world, the HUGE hassle that flying entails, or family and work responsibilities for EVE's large adult gamer population. It must be that people just simply don't want to go badly enough.
Yep, that's it.
It's not difficult to fly anywhere in a post 9/11 world apart from America. Hence why have it there if its the most difficult place to go to?
I can't see why not have one in Iceland, and one in Atlanta.
he's got a point

Because you know... Europes playerbase is totally smaller than USA in Eve.... and the game is completely not made in Iceland.
Plus Iceland is close-ish to the centre of the playebase. Get a ****ing grip and spend your money. Goto a CCP party at another event if your really want to see a CCP party.

I'm more likely to go to the fanfest in Iceland than one in the US and i even Live in the US.
going to Iceland to see a place i never have seen before. An island Nation that sits way the hell out away from Europe and the US just screams "plan a vacation around it"
One Held at Whitewolf's base sounds like a good idea. But with the Resrictions on Travel ( stupid ****ers SEARCHED my 78 year old Father) i really cant imagine many people wanting to come here.
