so im not a new player but when it comes to pvp i have no idea. i have 7 mill sp, mostly combat orientated but ive been putting off getting into pvp for ages but now im going to make a proper effort - i do however really need some advice and info on the following - - some useful skills for pvp (i have none trained whatsoever) - the logistics of making money in low sec - im not going to be pirating (for the moment at least as i have a corp lined up that is anti-pirate). will i need to flit back to empire to make isk to continue? - the use of a jumpclone - i will set a jc up as i have some pricey implants but i still want to use these (especially as my charr started as industrial and i immediatly switched to missioning). you can only change jc every 24 hours so this is a bit of a dilemma - do i just have to learn to live with much slower training times or do people switch back to train alot - what ship to use? id assume a cruiser and once i know i can investigate a good fit. - pos - advantages for me?
absolutely any advice on these issues would be greatly appreciated.
thanks in advance, vega

You have two "good" approaches.
One, remain a single character. In that case, I'd recommend joining FW, and only going into the FW areas when you want to PvP, returning to highsec to make more ISK. The empire JC will be full of expensive implants, the FW area JC will have cheap implants or no implants at all. And yes, you'll have to learn to live with slower training times while in the FW areas.
Two, create an alt account. In that case, just join a PvP corp, and use your main to fund your alt's developement and losses. You don't need a lot of SP to become a valuable asset to a PvP corp, and the fact your clone is much cheaper (less SP on it) makes it much less tragic to lose the pod too. Recommended skill paths and ships to use ? Frigate then Interceptor tackler, frigate then cruiser EWar//support, destroyer anti-tackler or gank cruiser. Pick any, or let the guys in the corp tell you whatthey need most.
Of course, you could try moving to lowsec to run missions or do other stuff solo, even try to set up a POS or such, but with the current state of affairs you're much better off with one of the above variants.

Well, I would join a corp for anything PvP related usually, its not really easy or ISK efficient to solo (even worse as a beginner). Plus they can help you alot.
- Skills: Propulsion Jamming, Microwarp drives and your basic tank/gank modules (guns, defenses etc.)
- Low sec money making is generally only slightly above high sec money making, so the risk of being a target is rarely worth the hassle, so if possible, you want to keep your high sec access.
- No way around the 24h timer, you just have to deal with the slower training times.
- T1 for starters, your corp should be to tell you which role to fill (tackling, damage, electronic warfare). Frigates and cruisers make for powerful and cheap PvP ships.
- POSes? I don't really think so...
FW is a good option, it allows you to get some fairly decent low sec PvP, and as long as you only shoot war targets, your security status will never suffer and you can keep full access to high sec. If you do kill/engage a neutral, if you do not pod them (where the REALLY big security penalty is), you should be able to keep it above -1.99 as well relatively easy.
0.0 could be an option, chances to rat and chances to PvP, but much different lifestyle than empire space. __________________________________________________

Cruisers are too expensive.
Just fit 10x kestrels and go pew pew. You will learn a lot. Get a pvp fit from the ships and modules forum. ---

I would not be worried about low sec too much, if I were you. You have decent amount of SP now, and I belive you can fly solo some belts or even agents... flying low sec is mainly about watching Local and being aligned and ready to run away when any danger appears... simply do not underestimate... but also do not beaffraid too much... go for some action... and enjoy first few engagements... it is thrilling __________________________________ I do it myyyy wayyyy... milky way. |

- Skills - propulsion jamming IV, signature analysis IV, energy management IV, energy operation IV, navigation IV, evasive maneuvering IV - assuming you fly caldari shield operation IV, shield management IV, tactical shield manupulation IV, shield compensation IV then of course skills that give you more dps
- You can rat and run missions in low sec no problems. Even do some exploration.
- Yes, it is a trade-off between losing more money each time you get podded or training slower and losing less money. You'll just have to accept that you're going to train skills slower than highsec carebears or learn to make enough ISK to support your losses.
- first use frigates and cruisers, then move up to interceptors and assault frigates ... try out different things, see what you like more
- err pos? no advantages really unless you can make it make ISK for you

As for making money in lowsec, there are a lot of hubs in lowsec that have 3 or more L4q20 agents in the same station. Irmalin is one. Aranir is another. The loyalty point rewards are significantly higher than highsec L4 agents, and the ISK rewards ain't bad, either. You can run missions there and make tons of ISK. The places are frequently bothered by pirates, so the people who run missions there tend to band together for "anti-pirate" PVP when necessary. Or to dock in the station and cry (as in the case of the Irmalin group). The point is, they do it together, with shared chat channels and so on.

One way to reduce the risk you are exposed to when using implants is to have a couple of jumpclones with different pairs of implants (I use +3s). For example I have one clone with an intelligence and a memory implant, and another clone with a willpower and a perception implant. If I'm training Electronics or engineering skills I use the int/mem clone, and if I'm training gunnery/SS command/missiles I use the wil/per clone. That way I only ever risk losing 2 implants instead of 4 or 5.
For awkward stuff like Navigation or Drones I just switch back to my all round +4 clone and stay out of harms way for a bit.

Also please note that in lowsec it's very hard to get podded except in case of Lag. When your ship is in flames, click on a planet or gate and start repeatedly clicking the "warp to" button, and you'll get away safely. Pods warp faster than any ship can target, and there are no interdictor bubbles in lowsec. You only really need a JC when you're going to 0.0.

another tactics its to select a gate far from you, add as first waypont and turn on the autopilot. When you ship explode the pod warps. The advantage ts that you have better chances to flee if get lag, the problem are that you stoped to control yur ship.

Edited by: Christina Bamar on 29/08/2008 19:50:48 You might want to look into one of our PvP Basic classes. We've been teaching new players how to pvp for over 2 years now and focus on how to do lots of damage without a lot of SP or isk. Classes start with a few hours of theory discussion followed by a real 0.0 pvp gang. You don't need to join our corp or anything, just pay a small enrollment fee to cover the instructor's time.

There have been some great posts offering wonderful advice, but I have a few little pointers as well.
I would recommend you fly frigates for a while. Namely the Rifter. If you dont have the skills to fly it, it doesnt take but a few hours to get into one. Then, just train up to use basic autocannons, webbers, scram, MWD/AB, and fit the lows with whatever tank you want...plate, small repper, EANM, damage control or gyrostabilizer. I recommend looking at the ship fittings forum for some solid pvp fits. The Rifter offers a very strong pvp platform for a very low cost/SP investment.
As you fly the Rifter, you will learn quickly what you can, and cant take on. Against most frigs/destroyers you will fare well. Against poorly flown cruisers you will also do well. Anything you dont want to fight...MWD away from and warp away. Part of PvP is learning who to tackle, and who to run from...when to engage, and when to take the high road out of Dodge.
As far as making money, the Rifter can handle most rats in low sec without too much problem...I recommend you find an out of the way system that has no one in local, and run the belts popping rats as you go. You may eventually get lucky and pop a faction spawn and make some sweet isk that way. Generally speaking, you will earn enough isk doing this to keep yourself in Rifters without a problem.
As you mentioned that you are >not< going into this to Pirate, you can also do what I call "PvP baiting". Basically, you make a target out of yourself, and then set up the confrontation to your benefit. While you are running those belts, keep an eye on local. Set up a safe spot near the first asteroid belt and go to it immediatly. Start scanning. If you pick up a ship that you think you can handle...then you go on the offensive and start running the belts looking for the bad guy. If you want to keep your sec status high, then just attack the enemy pilot without actually using your mods...i.e. warp into him, target him, go to your optimal, and wait for him to make the first hostile move.
So, whats going to happen. You are going to get violenced a >LOT<. You will lose a lot of Rifters. But at less than a million per ship, you can afford to lose a lot. Eventually, those losses will start slowing, and the wins will pick up. You will learn what to take on, and what not to. You will learn about using the scanner and safepoints. Eventually...as you do this...move up ship classes to cruiser. Then you up the ante on the ships you take on.
There are hundreds of corps out there, and many of them have wardecs going on. You could always join one, and head off for battle. Faction warfare is also a good way to get involved.
But always remember...when you head off to PvP...have the mindset that your ship is lost. Do not fly what you cannot afford to lose...and when you do lose, if it was a good fight, let your opponent know. When you win, win with grace and avoid smack (Unless they start it, then let go with as many whacks of the smacktrout as you can).
Learn from every battle, every engagement, and every win, and loss. If you die, ask yourself why...and try not to do that again. I can look back to every loss on my characters sheet, and tell you exactly how >I< screwed up to lead to that loss. Most often, your loss isnt due to the enemies skills/talent, but rather the lack of your own.
Happy pewpew.

FW is a good way to go tho if ur getting ur feet wet in PvP. 0.0 Ratting is also profitable more so than grinding missions imo |
