at the moment im still in a rifter, but im a few weeks away from getting one of the minmatar assault ships. should i start pirating then or wait for an even better ship.

Don't wait 'till you get into expensive ships, rifter is quite nice for lowsec belt piracy when you're starting it. Because its cheap. _______

I started after I ended my trial account. Find a L3 honey hole for money. Then fly a race with a good frig and future BS. The best part of eve for me is the low sec life.

If you want to pirate - NOW is a good time to start. Fly cheap tech 1 in the beginning, since you're are bound to make a lot of silly mistakes in the beginning anyway.
Good luck

My alt died in a stabber recently to a merlin.... for the setup ud would have needed maybe 2 months of training, or even if u dint quite have some t2 mods would still have killed me....
eveyone on ts laughed at me and I used all my skills of look at ship to try get a litte damage in by matching his ships directin but to no avail .. and then they laughed harder when I was like all eggy and stuff.
that merlin could be u ,, just turn to the dark side and ur on ur way.

this tbh
and like they said, dont wait until you get better ships because just so you know, t2 ships like the assault ship you want only insure for their t1 value, which means each time you die (which you will) your out 10mil from the get go
you can use that money for a cruiser which can tank more, do more damage and everything, and still not spend as much, and its insurable, which means you only lose the value of your equipment

Just echoing the sentiments already put forth. Start now. Fly cheap. You will die a lot in the beginning. ---- Train more. Whine less.

join a pvp corp first... learn from them instead of trying to figure out stuff on your own by getting blown up over and over and calling yourself a pirate in the process... know the ships, know the fights... after getting good at pvp you can become anything you want, pirate, merc, whatever...

I started pirating as soon as I could fly a t1 fitted battlecruiser and haven't looked back. My advice make sure you can support yourself isk-wise before you go -10 and **** block yourself from high-sec. Best way is to have a logistics alt ferry your stuff from hi-sec.

I started piracy the moment I had the skills to use a warp scrambler and stasis webifier, flying my Incursus. You can read about my experiences at http://eve-pirate.blogspot.com.
Some pilots just take a cheap T1 frigate out and start hunting; others train up for cruisers or battlecruisers before they start. The pilots in the frigates usually end up killing the pilots in the bigger ships; at any given point in their career, the former are more experienced pirates than the latter.
As you skill up and are able to fly more classes of ships, you'll have more options, more flexibility, more opportunities; but in any class of ship, you have to have a clear idea of which ships are risks and which are opportunities while you're in that ship. Might as well start learning with T1 frigates.

I started piracy in a frigate, just into cruiser skills. I sucked at first, I won't lie. My first pirate corp taught me all the ropes though, and now... I still suck, but less.
Good luck to you!

really if you pick your fights and flee if there are hostiles you can start on day 1. just remember that mining barges and industrials are pretty weak. |

after the third month in to the game, I started pirating and never looked back. make sure you have an alternative means of income though, as even more Advanced pirates lose ships.
drop me a mail, if you are indeed interested in the arts, and we can have a chat.

What Gilly said :o)
I lost a crapload of ships when I started. Can't emphasize the back-up money plan, you'll need it. Don't stress about it tho, you'll figure it out. Actually that's how I became such a great ore-thief.
Like many things, it is a journey. Go for it and don't look back.

Edited by: NeoTheo on 01/09/2008 10:22:12 biggest thing i can say to any pirate starting out is, SORT YOUR LOGISTICS.
;)
you need a alt who can haul stuff in to lowsec for you and you also need someone to fly in your battleships.
other than that, just honour your ransoms, and pew pew pew. ;)

I was a carebear, doing nothing but missions until my char was 10 months old. Then the mission running got so annoying that I decided to put an end to this dull path and luckily met TBR who taught me the art of transferring other people's property to you by force. The positive side of this approach was a good financial background that helped me to compensate my losses.
As others stated above, only fly what you can afford to lose because you will lose it at some point. Specialize in one ship class first and then diversify.
1) Learn to use your scanner 2) Watch local 3) Find like minded people to learn from. 4) ??? 5) Profit
And do it NOW! |

I started occasionally pirating about three months into the game or something in a Rifter. I went to full time piracy maybe 5 months into the game, flying almost exclusively Rifters for a long while.
Logistics is easy for a Rifter pilot to sort out - buy a Rifter BPO, and get a alt (works on the same account too) in a hauling frigate to bring you modules and other stuff. It does not take too long to specialize in a Rifter and when you do, it's a very capable ship.
Nowdays you'll mostly see me in a BC which I am heavily specialized into, but I can fly any T1 ship with good proficency, and occasionally fly AFs for solo fun (note that AFs, while easy to get, require quite a bit of skills to be really effective and are generally rather expensive to fit correctly - meaning they're not begginer's ships).

What Branko was trying to say is, he faction fits his AF's and kills people in complexs with them. Branko also loves to suicide his Phoons so normally fly a Cane instead as it costs less to loss when he is drunk. :)

Rigged deadspace-fit AFs, faction fittings suck
What have you been up to, anyway? I miss having you in the Rapier + Dartauw in the Broadsword for camps, that is a vile combination

Start your pirating career as soon as possible. Make suitable arrangements to either sell all your stuff in high-sec (going to be difficult to re-enter high sec space when you're blinking and red...) and find a base in low-sec to base yourself out of.
Get a cheap ship - I find a T1 fitted rifter to be an ideal choice and then go to town.
You will lose ships on a regular basis but you should be having more fun then at any time in your EVE career.
Good hunting.
