Okay, I've just spotted what appears to be the biggest spider I've ever laid eyes upon, and I currently fear for my safety and the safety of my family (the little ones most of all, one of em has arachnophilia, loves spiders) as I'm not completely sure if its even safe to have in the house, let alone consider a possible infestation of the things.
Okay, description goes:
*2-3in body length *4-5in leg span *brown with black markings on back *seen most at night (considering what I've seen so far outside in the empty lot a couple of months ago must be juvenile at 2in most) *tropical region, SE-Asia, Philippines, Luzon island (suburbs in city)
I need legitimate attempts at identification, or any information whatsoever. I cannot have this thing living so close to kids, let alone anyone else down here. -

Based on your description i cannot identify the exact species, but as a rule of thumb, the bigger they get, the less dangerous they are. That's not necessary true for the strength of the venom, but for agressive behaviour - the small one are much more likely to kill a child or poison an adult then the bigger ones, since they prey mostly at night on small rodents or big insects. Nevertheless, it's a ****ing spider, smash it, or catpure and sell it
Before some biggot steps in, and talks about the absolutly dangerous blabla spiders, it's a fact that in most countrys spiders of that measurements are kept for keeping the house clean of other parasites and stuff - that should give one a picture of how aggressive they are.

Actually I dont kill spiders either, Ive always had a bug problem in my house and since ive stopped killing spiders the bug problem had stopped.
And they dont bite, ive never been biten(though my spiders are typically well fed).

I'm in Australia, so a little south from where you are, but you describe sounds like it might be a huntsman. If so, it's quite harmless, although they do have a nasty bite, so I kill them anyway. However, the very fact that you're posting is odd. If there's a spider, and you can't identify it, and you feel it's possible venomous and a threat to your family, kill it. Firstly, it makes identification a lot easier when it's dead, and secondly, it's just a spider. If you don't know what it is, or even if you're 99% sure it's safe, better to kill it than risk it running around in your house

Edited by: Kazuma Saruwatari on 31/08/2008 22:12:06 Markings are way off of a huntsman, I'll update with that link of your pic of a huntsman with updated description.
currently I'm looking through my picture archives of a smaller one that looks exactly like the one I saw, markings and all, a couple of years ago.
EDIT: Found the old pic, definately looks like the one I saw, updating original post once I upload. -

I would freak out if I ever saw a spider that big. Most the ones around here are pretty small (though i saw a MASSIVE one earlier hiding behind a radiator) and I only do anything about them when they start building cobwebs and when a whole swarm of babyspiders hatches on the ceiling right above me
Never been bitten though, and they're generally far less annoying to have around than flies, mosquitos and moths...

Going off your picture, my uneducated guess would be a wolf spider of some sort, or a slightly different species of huntsman. A wolf spider bite won't kill you, but it'll leave a nasty scar. However hopefully someone with more knowlege on the matter could be a little more specific

Yeah, it looks like a Wolf Spider... they bite but they not dangerous. The spikies on the tops of the legs gave it away

None of the visual cues match the current pictures on the wikipedia article on wolf spiders, but considering the diverse landmasses wolf spiders cover, I can understand that.
It, however, does not match the size mentioned, 8cm is too small for this spider I spotted. Its easily 4 inches in size. -

Giant spiders... ewww! Normally this shouldn't happen due to size limitations imposed by their primitive respiratory system.
However you need to pack up your things and move to a colder climate country right away.

Kazuma, the big hairy spiders are not a cause for concern unless you live in Sydney

so far I've got hits from zoologists down here of it either being a huntsman or wolf spider.
either way, if I see it its going to get a quad-eyeful of bug spray.
Any additional info is welcome. -

bug spray isn't the best thing to use... use something made of cast iron

Seriously, don't use bug spray that isn't also f*cking harmful for humans, believe me i have experience in this field. Bugs are far more resilient than most humans. Use the good ol' hammer, boot or electroshocker.

Get a pet lizard that preys on spiders. If you spot one spider you likely have others atleast in the area of your house. People get cats for mice, dogs for bigger issues, get a lizard for the spider. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

if I had a can of WD40 and a lighter I'd use that myself. Grandmother happens to be in the household atm visiting the little ones and she spotted the picture of the spider on my screen...
...well, more like came in running with her slipper in her hand going at my 22' widescreen (OHSHI-)
She mentions basically that she was bitten once by something that looked similar when she was a teen, and showed me the scar. Nasty, mind you.
That was enough to make me face the elders of the family, grandmother's support and all, to finally get some proper bug/pest control going in the house. We've been lax as of late due to monetary concerns... -

That sounds like the spider isn't the only bug. In that case, indeed, get yourself a nice little lizzard as Jacob already recommended. Works 100%, and doesn't cost you half as much as bug spray or a specialist to clean the mess up - provided you have enough bugs to feed the thing long enough. Dunno what the price for pet food is in your region of the world, but even in europes colder places you normaly can gather enough insects to feed a lizzard for a week in a couple of hours.

My room's a practical lizard breeding ground. Down here, we have gecko's the length of a middle finger going around eating mosquitoes, also they make this "tsk tsk tsk" like sound when mating. Colloquially called "pessimistic wall" (rough translation) for their tendancy to do the "tsk"-ing sound when behind something on the wall, like a painting or a framed picture.
I've got 5 regulars in my own room right now, one's on my ceiling as I type, and from his lack of tail, looks to be fresh from a fight with one of the other males.
EDIT: I just found his tail, being eaten by the big spider that was spotted hours ago. He dragged it away to another hole in my bathroom...
Currently smoke-bombing my bathroom now with locally-made anti-insect "katol" insence. -

Heh I love big spiders. My housemates last year would freak out if they saw one, so I would get to stride in all manly, pick it up in my hands and toss it outside.
Of course I have the advantage of not living in some exotic tropical faraway land where spiders can bite. __________________________

I killed a common house spider once and its innards stained my carpet, and I subsequently poured a load of anti-bacterial stuff over the splodge patch.
But whether you decide to kill it or capture it I recommend getting rid of it asap or this might happen:

Ew, yes had that happen quite a few times. If I didn't vacuum them up really fast they'd spread out like crazy and within a few months my house would be full of the things
Luckily my Cat is weird and eats them
