Why don't ships that are old, such as my trusty HARBINGER which I have had for ages, why don't they accumulate experience points when they are used?
These points could be exchanged to increase a ships abilities such as armour amount or alignment speed. Not too much incremental increases, but with a cap also forcing players to upgrade other elements on the ship.
I think it would make ships a little more varied. Say you bought a ship used by a mission runner, it's armour would be slightly stonger or thicker than a PVP'ers ship which might have inherent better alignment. |

No...they have an age, a history.
Are you saying that wine doesn't get better with age as it has no memory? |

Might as well have our ships talk, since they can magically grow armor. Besides, if you have a mission runner ship, there is a way to already increase it's armor/shield. It's called buying more expensive stuff for it. |

Two things here.
First, what you're talking about is a grind-based upgrade system, so that's a definite no from the start.
Second, you're talking about an upgrade/customisation system for ships, and it's been asked for for ages, but the reason we don't have it is technical and database limitations. We got a half-way through system when they introduced rigs... might not be the best, but it's better than nothing.
Bottom line : no.

Interesting concept.
Of course my Pinto doesn't seem to be near the car it used to be. I think deteriorating over time is MUCH more realistic than getting better..... |

I think its a good idea, but should not be a grind based system... so make it PVP kills only, NPCs wont count... Of course then gate camp lowsec pirates will get too much experiance... So where its an unlawful kill, you should only get experiance for your ship if they try (however feebly) to fight back. Finally XP would scale with ship type, newb ships = 0, other than that bigger = more xp. |

That's why we have fully automated Repairbays in Stations. You could even say the Station's Docking Clamps are some sort of Maintenance Robots.
Quote: so make it PVP kills only
Which is just as much Grind. |

And even if they have memory, we are talking about the ship computer. So if it does learn anything useful, you can just copy it to the ships of anyone who might benefit from it. |

Much as I hate knee-jerk reactions based on specific phrases, I do think the key word used in the OP that is cause for concern is 'experience points'. Contrary to the normal MMO concept, EVE has never had a notion of 'do this task for ages and you get better at it', beyond what happens between your ears (i.e. real player experience). I'd say this is one of its core appeals.
If we were going to commit what some view as the cardinal sin of discussing 'reality' compared to gameplay, then as has been pointed out, objects tend to deteriorate with time, and if my ship AI got better at something, I'd take a copy and use it in every ship. One could equally argue this is precisely what our skill training is in some areas.
I've always had a soft spot for the notion of subtle ship variety (which is what rigs were supposed to be, but weren't) over and above the modules you fit to it. However, to me this isn't the way to go about it. |

i was told by one of my friends that at one stage you could speed up learning by just flying around and jumping through gates. (PS could someone confirm or deny this). As you can imagine, people use to set ships to autopilot and go to work while their skills got a valuable boost.
so the question that i have for you is why would auto-piloting or using fof missiles while afk give your ship some sort of bonus? |

Denied. You won't get a Skillboost for Jumping whatsoever. You don't even need to be online to have the same SP 'flow'.
To the Basic Idea of this... The Point of Grinding could be merged with the current System of Training: You either "Download" a Skill into your Brain a la Matrix (current System) or you actively Train it by using it (Flying in a Ship > Space Ship Control, Controlling Drones > Drone Spec, Shooting Weapons > Weapon Specialization, etc).
I don't have any Oppinion about this one, since it can be implemented to benefit the Game just as it can be made totaly wrong and scourge the Eve World. |

What about leadership skills 'magically' growing armor? The longer you fly a ship, the more experience you could get with it. ( aswell as if there ectualy are shipcrews they will earn more experience to ).
But, the bonus's 'experience' should give is not by growing armor or shields. No, it should be about the modules getting a bonus with experience ( shipcrew or you learning how to use modules better). Like + 50 armor repair amount on a Large armor repair as an example.
And the experience you get should be showed just like skilltraining. Like, gaining experience points from a pvp fight will give an X amount of points and adding that on the 'ships experience bar' or something. Lvl 1 will need an X amount of points and so does lvl 2 till lvl 5. Like skilltraining, every lvl needs more points and will give more bonus's per as it grows to a higher lvl.
This should make it a bit easier and more realistic.

I think you are looking at this from the wrong angle. The ship should not gain experience points but your character should. so the more you fly your ship the better you get and it should work as with skill points but not be effected by your attributes but buy the skills needed for the peticular ship or module. so if you fly a cruiser and you have cruicer lvl 3 you will earn less then someone with cruiser lvl 5. same thing goes for each type of moduel. this will also give the players that are more active and contributing to the game more of an reward then isk gives them.

you find it unrealistic that the squad leader could take it on himself to help manage his squad mates armor/shield?
i always assumed that since armor didnt burn off from one side and stay on the other, that it was some kind of nanite-enhanced armor, that shifted around the hull to always provide close to optimum defense. if you have a squad leader dedicating some of his brain to managing that system, its not inconceivable that he could effectively increase your armor, nothing magic about it.
however, as for your ship learning that, please see other peoples comments regarding copying the software to every ship.
meanwhile, you can learn that via skills.
your crew has nothing to do with the shifting of the armor during a firefight, they dont skill up.
- PvPers always say "GB2WoW". the message is that EVE is hard, and people just need to deal with it. wasn't it funny how when nano's started making it hard for *them*, that all went out the window? |
