Sometimes people talk about ship tiers, like a tier 1 battleship or tier 2 battlecruiser.
What is that? Is tier 3 generally better than tier 2 which is generally better than tier 1?
Among Caldari ships, what are the tier 1, 2 and 3 frigates, cruisers, battlecruisers and battleships?
The distinction doesn't make much sense to me, that's why I'm asking...

E.G. Scorpion - Tier 1, Raven = Tier 2, Rokh = 3 Note, higher tier doesnt automatially make it 'better'. |

tier often has a lot to do with base price and build cost, the higher the tier the more expensive the ship, also it only applies to TECH one ships.
cyclone / ferox / prophecy / brutix are tier 1 bc's and are about 22 mil
hurricane / drake / harbinger / myrmidon are tier 2 bc's and are about 32 mil
etc etc etc |

A higher tier ship of the same class will have more fittings (power and cpu) as well as more slots to fit things in and more hp.
It will also generally be ballanced to tank better and deal more damage than lower tier ships but thats a very general rule and has little basis on their real combat ability.
The main way of telling the tier of a ship is the skills requirements imo (so I would say there are several second tier cruisers and frigates for each race) |

So if a specific tech 1 frigate requires Caldari Frigate 4 to fly, then it is a tier 4 frigate?
Thanks.

tier of the ship is based on the skill required to fly it
ferox tier one caldari BC requires BC 1 to fly drake tier two caldari BC requires BC 2 to fly
higher tier ships are more expensive and generally more capable, but obviously ship's bonuses give different ships different roles.
tech 2 ships are NOT known as tier five., but known as t2 or tech 2. therefore be careful when using tier 2 to describe a ship because its easy to confuse with tech and ppl with think you don't know what you are talking about.

Which is why tii is a completely different kind of pvp, generally leaving new guys without the skills out in the cold. The idea of specialised ships is great, and without slot/hp constrains of tiers, tii does it well however in tier i the tier dictates the slots and hp thus the ships ability to perform its "specialised" role.
Short version: tiers shaft ti ships. ***The EVE servers and their patches*** |

o.O you are drunk or something.
OP: you've got the idea. Looking at the spaceship command skill required to fly the ship will tell you what "tier" it is. Higher tier generally has more cpu/grid/hp than lower tier but that does not mean lower tier ships are "worse" than higher tier ships at all.

I think I have sometimes seen people use small t to denote tier and large T to denote tech level, but it looks like a bad idea to me.
