What kind of morons do they think we are?
I'll be taking this to my boss first thing tomorrow morning with a formal request to officially (and via Group Policy) ban Chrome from all our company's multiple thousands of PC's and laptops.

Google is notorious for hiding ownership terms well. Expect them to break it apart and add it to other sections somewhat differently worded so they can still steal your shyt.
I have never trusted google or used any known google products. Any idiot that uses google products has basically GIVEN google ownership of your stuff, while they are back-peddling hard here, notice they don't say anything about changing the EuLA on their other products (G-Mail anyone?)? Use google, get owned.
Storm
*edit got a google toolbar on your explorer or firefox? Might wanna check the EuLA on that as well. Think about your web browsing habits. Bought anything online? guess what, google knows it AND your card information.

That's a SEPARATE article BTW. No reason I would necessarily know about it by reading the first article. Honest mistake, and no whining.
Oh, and I tried Chrome, didn't like it. If I want a featureless web browser with ZERO built-in extensibility, I'll use Konqueror.

Things you need to know about Chrome:
- if you enter an address into a web form, it will be sent to Google eventually - same happens with nonexisting URLs - every Chrome installation has a unique ID that gets bound to your Google account as soon as you use the latter with Chrome. After that, your whole browsing history is traceable to your Google account.
Also, Chrome has access to and will import your browser settings including logins/passwords.
I'm sorry Google, but I prefer browsers from an entity that doesn't have shareholder pressure to earn money using my personal data and private web surfing habits.

Yah, 'cause click-through EULAs are the same as notarized contracts, right?
EULAs are just scribbles on a page until a court decides to rule for the EULA holder. Even then, appeals and counter appeals go on for years... I'm not concerned about EULAs, even if they stated I was signing over my left ball.
The privacy concerns with Google do bother me, though. I don't see Chrome helping on that issue at all...

I think your latter point is well founded. The problem that this copy pasta EULA has, is of a somewhat Freudian slip of what google seems to be about in the long term.

So exactly what personal data does Chrome send back to Google ?
Since Chrome is open source, it shouldn't take too long for someone to come up with a complete list. And since it's open source, we can just wait for it to come out of beta, take the code, then release our own version with the spying disabled and the EULA removed.

First, it allows for further penetration of Google Search. Google logs all inquiries to your ip and (as we've seen from recent cases with a media company I forget the name of, can be used in civil cases against Google... the next logical steps are aggressive companies using those in civil and criminal cases against the offending IP address...you in other words). Next, Chrome will sync with Gmail and log your inquiries (via its search caching...note, I'm repeating this from someone else, I'm assuming their correct). Obviously, Gmail is as suseptible to subpeonas as Google Search is, since it's all Google's property.
That's just the obvious stuff. Factor in stuff like potential use of ad-sence and web crawling bots owned by Google (yes, I'm throwing this out as a potential, I don't know if its in the same class or not).
Certainly you can open source the software, but Google's internet servers are so ubuitous that they end up being the default hardware and the potentially the default browser. Kinda scary if you're a bit tinfiol prone (like me).
Google's mantra is supposed to be Do No Evil. They may, merely from their success, have done more harm than good.
*note, I don't claim to have a full understanding (or even partial :P), but I do see problems with Google's market penetration vs it's control over its own data (that we've given it).

Instead of talking all kind of rubbish without proper knowledge of the situation, you'd better read Matt Cutts' blog. He's very clear and honest about how the browser works and what it really does (or doesn't.)
He already wrote about Chrome's connections to or from Google, debunked some misconceptions and explained the EULA situation. He's the better first-hand, reliable source of information from Google about Chrome that you have.
Just because you need to be paranoid to play Eve doesn't mean you need to be paranoid with everything...

I would need to disagree with you here. If your not paranoid about everything you do online and off, your just asking to get ganked. It is better to be tinfoil hat paranoid, and relatively safe, than carebear afk stupid and get ganked in game or life.

Okay, answer this honestly... when YouTube went up, did it concern you in the slightest what content you uploaded, downloaded or shared?
No? Then you didn't see the consequences of reality. Still sanguine you can read the tea leaves, or is there some doubt?
You'd better be worried now, given the PROVEN track record for media companies using whatever info they can reach to garner whatever revenue they can (and setting legal precedents along the way). If you think future battles will only concern companies and 'other people', I have a bridge I'd like to sell you.
Seriously m8... there's being laid back and then there's just plain dumb.
Every day, you give out your personal data... why are you not concerned about who uses that data or what purposes they use it in? Would you give out your bank card's PIN to people you didn't know? No? The next level of Western Civ *will* include stronger ties to media. If you have no control of where that media enters your life (medical, professional, lifestyle etc), then you no longer control your self.
This isn't paranoia, this is common sense given the trends in penetration and interconnectedness we've seen from the 80's to now. It's not going to lessen. For the most part, that will be a good thing, but the potential for abuse is clear.
It's just common sense to be paranoid.

I disagree. It's just common sense to be alert. Paranoia can take you to a state of mind where you can't distinguish reality from your imagination. Read the Wikipedia definition of paranoia and you'll understand. Anyway, I was trying to be funny and to add some light to the topic...

Just wait till people are actually using Chrome. See the part in the EULA where they can update Chrome/install new components without your consent and knowledge. Perhaps you have to be paranoid to think Google is bad, but then again you have to be very naive to think that EULA clauses exist for the heck of it and not because someone's planning on putting you in a situation where they will be useful.

You mean this?
Quote: 12. Software updates
12.1 The Software which you use may automatically download and install updates from time to time from Google. These updates are designed to improve, enhance and further develop the Services and may take the form of bug fixes, enhanced functions, new software modules and completely new versions. You agree to receive such updates (and permit Google to deliver these to you) as part of your use of the Services.
Looks like your consent to accept automatic updates. Similar to Windows XP Professional OEM EULA:
Quote: Internet-Based Services Components. The SOFTWARE contains components that enable and facilitate the use of certain Internet-based services. You acknowledge and agree that MS, Microsoft Corporation or their subsidiaries may automatically check the version of the SOFTWARE and/or its components that you are utilizing and may provide upgrades or supplements to the SOFTWARE that may be automatically downloaded to your COMPUTER.
Personally, I don't have a problem with automatic updates, and it doesn't say they are not going to inform you of the update. They only ask you to agree on an automated update mechanism.
