Ok, this is not a video I did and I just placed it in there because - frankly - I don't know where to put it, and it's just too related to eve to be placed in the out of pod section...
Ok, so here's the link: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/208-Eve-Online
Yahtzee is an awfully fast talking a critical reviewer, so be warned first!
His topic is now eve-online and his 14 day trial in it... I would very much point out that he is wrong but actually the sad fact is that he is right.
He is right in the way that (developers hear, hear!) eve's 14 day trial is just not enough to give a full impression of what this game is about and why 250.000 "nerds" are playing and paying for it.
Anyone watching the video should look at it the way I did, and "cut some slack" or whatever for the guy because he is just so preoccupied with its own awesomeness that he just can't say anything without dissing it six feet below ground first. ----------------------------------------------- "I do not belive in reicarnation... I didn't believed in it in my previous lives either..."

I disagree. If you can't figure out that you will enjoy the game in the 14 days odds are you WON'T enjoy the game. EVE has been successful for so long partly because (IMO) it attracts a long-term playerbase.
So what if Yahtzee doesn't like the game. He only likes single player stuff anyway, and every multiplayer game he reviews he hates precisely because he tries to play it alone and gets bored.

Yeh Yahtzee is that "I'm still using 56k, hehe..." guy. But I've actually tried the trial again (not that I am not playing, but I tested the 14 days again with a noob character just for fun - and to test it with 1-1,5 year of eve experience behind me) and I must say that he is perfectly right.
There should be a small sandbox for newbs that help them enjoy their 14 days so much that they stay for a year and more... Because right now even with Aura's help they are actually tossed out into the wild, with little to no money, even less knowledge, and stuff they can't get or can't use because the lack of money... ----------------------------------------------- "I do not belive in reicarnation... I started playing eve 4 years ago and made a new character just for fun. I found all the new hints and tips they give you now alot more helpful then before.
As for the guy who give his comment about eve with his funny little video. He is what we call a noob without a goal. Join a corp and player that fit your needs and timezone. As you work as a team you fine the game fun and skill trainning is not something you worry about after a few months of playing.

I agree
I mean I started playing EVE first when it came out, and back then it was acceptable since there was much less competition in general and the grip-factor wasn't really an issue. In fact they didn't even have trials...
If I started playing EVE today I don't think I'd have kept playing past the trial...

quoting a corpmate "what you'd expect from a casual console gamer".
however, a 14 day trial, no joining a player corp etc is basically ignoring most of the game. so naturally the review doesn't even mention possibilities such as fighting for and defending your own patch of space, or honestly any PvP at all.

ok, seriously: With a 14 day trial what are you talking about pvp? He'll be blown to bits long before he has really logged into the session...
Face it lads: the learning curve is so steep that you suck ***** for the first few MONTHS just to get your head around basic game mechanics... ----------------------------------------------- "I do not belive in reicarnation... I didn't believed in it in my previous lives either..."

That is the the thing to unless you have friends its hard to get into it. I started last year and I am still learning things. But I've learned that from other people. Alot of Eve in general is other peoples knowledge. I've spoken to people that played before they gave you those lvl 5 skills and 900sp. So the people that join now are lucky.
Another thing is people that join from a game like WoW or another mmo think that games should be simple. Yes this argument has been said alot that Eve is a hard game to just jump into. First few weeks before i started pvping I lost interest to be honest. But once I set a goal to get into that Thorax or Blackbird you feel useful. And yeah solo players dont get it because for some reason they pay to play solo on an MMO!! Why?? Preference but really never seen the point myself because it doesnt. But Eve is probably one of the biggest social games I have played. The typical MMO you feel cut off from everything like you do what the developer wants you to do. CCP gave people a playground. I think that should be looked at more instead of what the developers think is best.

I went low security status when i was in my 14 day trial period... was a fun time, i assure you (rawr fail punisher).
Back on topic, it is true you can't do much in the 14days, especially if you don't have any friends in game, so its not much of a test... but i do agree with his complaints on traveling :) (hey ccp, want to make it so you can instantly jump to constellation boundaries or something? :) All in all though, i had a good laugh at the vid, even if it is missing on a few points.

Edited by: Bagehi on 10/09/2008 18:42:14 The 14-day trial weeds out people who are looking for a WoW experience:
Here, have a rusty dagger, despite the really crappy stuff you have, you are still somehow able to slaughter everything in sight. Now have a steel sword so you can slaughter these slightly less helpless NPCs for several more hours of mind-numbing instant gratification.
Eve could probably make some changes to cater to that crowd and swell our numbers. We could have arenas where similarly skilled players can smash each other's ships with the stuff they bought on ebay. Which would undoubtedly work out well for CCP's financial numbers in the short term.
I, for one, prefer Eve the way it is. Where you stop playing occasionally because you lost everything, not because you became some mind-numbingly bored that you decided to spend your time watching paint peel rather than stare at your character's back while he/she slaughters yet another version of a ghost/zombie/alligator/elemental - all to play in a rinse-repeat PVP arena.

LoL... I used to watch Escapist all the time, i dont watch it for a review, but cuz its really funny =)
Anyways... Eve is Boring as hell when u start play because you cant do what others MMORPG offers, make ur character stronger, you just cant because you have to train a month of Learning skills.. CCP FAILS =P

Any of you older players can say 3 to 4 years ago the tutorial was a failure. If you play it now it's alot more helpful now then it was. As for the player not being able to get what he wanted right away. Well i'm just glad eve keep kids away from here or it would be just like wow and i would have no reason to play it.

I dont disagree that the 14 day(really first month or two) sucking mossy oak balls does weed out the ones who wouldnt hack it in eve anyway. But really all the good things in eve cant be done early on. Even if you wanted to be super hardcore in your t1 cruiser and go help defend 0.0 from the evil blob, you likely cant. Most decent pvp corps arent going to want you. ------------------ For Medicinal Use Only. |
