I have read this entire thread and have decided to way in my thoughts!
The Mittani is our representative. The players. Due to the large outcry by both players and CSM comrades alike it is clear that he is no longer going to be able to represent us all from a neutral position.
If we put aside the fact this is a game to start with and focus on the actual comments. Cyberbullying is a serious, serious accusation. As a representative of CCP I imagine any other employee would at least be stood down pending investigation. As we enter into the age of information technology our reps on CSM7 need to realize that they are not only representing a vast majority of players from different ethnic and religious backgrounds but also that anything they say is going to be read. This in some cases was not only an attack on the playr but also an attack on various faiths who believe suicicde to be unacceptable. In ANY workplace it is unacceptable to make comments such as was made.
I am the first to advocate freedom of speech and Non-PC comments but this was taking it too far. Fanfest is the biggest event in our diary, it is a time to get to know each nother outside of game and enjoy ourselves, instead it has been tarnished by a man who self gratifys himself as a sadistic game player. As Chairman of CSM I would expect a professional aura to be given off at all times especially when in such a public situation as Fanfest. The thing that continues to bug me the most is his continual display of being "the bad guy", I appreciate he got the votes and that is why he is where he is, but why on EARTH would you not have to characters your in game character and your proffessional charismatic self out side of game who deals with "in game press".
I do hope that if nothing else a warning is given. As this is the chance to make an example for the ENTIRE MMO community that Cyber harrasment will NOT be tolerated. I can only imagine what would have been the reaction of in game moderators if this comment had been broadcast over chat...

I find this interesting. Would you expect a public figure to apologise for expressing his enjoyment of eating pork? After all, various faiths object to the eating of pork. Not that I agree or disagree with any of this but I couldn't help but laugh at this well thought out statement. It's ridiculous that people in the public eye have to watch everything they say for fear of making an unintentional attack on "various faiths". Even more ridiculous is the idea that an objection to suicide as a matter of faith is something that holds a special place above that of a purely moral objection.
And yet if this were a real life employee, they would have to consider everything that came out of their mouths would they not? If this comment was made by the director of CCP would we not all expect to see his resignation the following day? How is our representative any different? He is given a privilege, which he abused.
What I am referring to here is not the exact example, I am instead trying to refer to a path that should never have been walked down. There are certain topics it is just bad taste to raise.
If we are a society that does not object to jokes on a humans life, then I personally have just a little more faith in humanity.

Hmm, I wonder if anyone else in this thread may have been found guilty of such a low, despicable act. BTW, how did you turn ridiculing someone's suicidal cry for attention into slander against religions that abhor suicide? Aren't you trying to stretch the victim list just a wee bit here?
Not at all. I used an extreme scenario that is still relevant to the topic. There is nothing despicable about what I said at all. Again, not at all. He is a representative of the community. If this was just another player being slanderous towards then im sure CCP would have instigated a ban on the account. This however is the chairman of CSM7. Personally speaking I have no issue with The Mittani, his comment however hit a moral chord and I was simply trying to prove a point that a member of CSM has to think about every word that comes out. Stand down or not, it does not worry me. He seems genuinely apologetic and at the end of the day one can but hope that such comments would not be made again. The fact he recognised his behavior as being abhorrent to also shows that he has genuinely considered his actions. I am not on a witch hunt and I appreciate your viewpoint as well.
This is a game however when people are offended, someone needs to speak up. I would hope anyone with half a conscience would stand up for what they believe in. |
