Faction war is the next step after mission running or being in a starter-corp.
However, it's still in development and there's not much to do in it. Nor is there any ISK to be made in it.
If you're a PVP noob, it does give you access to some PVP experienced pilots who are generally willing to help.
It wasn't around when I was a starter but I would definitely have participated if it was.

It's probably a good place to go and learn. This goes for any of the faction militias I think, including the Amarr one.

I think his question may be related to all the Minmatar chestbeating that they are completely dominating the Amarr militia in terms of member count, skillpoints, playing ability, epeen length and members of the church of the flying spaghetti monster.
He might be afraid that he can't find proper fights if he joins.
I'm wondering the same thing, by the way, as I've been toying with the idea of creating an alt for FW.

Despite having fewer pilots, the Amarrians are generally outperforming the Minmatars.
In the last 24 hours: Kills: Amarr 122-47 Minmatar VPs: Amarr 4872-4756 Minmatar

Although true, we always welcome more targets.
Keep an eye on the population stats. They seem to be stabilising at about 1k more Minmitar than Amarr.
Edit: the 24hr stats fluctuate greatly. I don't suggest that you should use them as a basis for your decision. --------------------------------------- Outface the depths of evil with clarity --------------------------------------- |

Er, in your dreams.
The Amarr are the baddies the Minamatar are the goodies. Join the Amarr if you want to be a baddy.

baddies?
What about the poor janitor sweeping up the deck of the deathstar when that luke skywalker terrorist blew it up. He was just doing his job for god sakes!

since 0utbreak left, the two militias have been far more evenly matched; and now with the Heretics leaving the minmatar militia I wonder if it'll become weighted in favour of the amarr. =/

They do indeed fluctuate, however I stand by my claim that the earlier assertion that the Amarrians are on the back foot is wrong.
Whilst we took a bit of a pasting in the first few weeks, things have since stabilised and we even managed to re-capture three of our systems.

Bad and good don't exist in the Factions in this game. Its all subjective.
When roleplaying, Minmatar see Amarr as evil, yet Caldari see Gallente as evil.
Its all largely irrelevant anyway, considering that FW is just a way for pirates to get more kills.

The only problem I've had with FW so far is getting fights. I just joined recently and I've been in several fleets that saw no hostile action at all. Only kills I've gotten have been a few flashy red guys.
If you have no PvP experience at all it's good to get your feet wet. I don't know that I can vouch for the experience of people that you might encounter to learn from though. I've been in a few fleets already with FCs that didn't know some fairly basic things about how the game works.
