I once with had a computer without a case. It lived on 3 ceramic tiles, under a little window screen tent i made, with a 20" box fan blowing on it. Thing lasted 5 years like that. I bet that was a record for those old P.O.S. 486DX4 Packard Bells. --

lol, that's awesome... I used to live in an apartment that used to get really hot in the summertime. I got tired of the constant rebooting and did the exact same thing until I moved out...

I've just recently setup my new rig: +100fps in space v.s. 20 (if I was lucky) on my notebook is a nice change to experience.
I live in Australia and as I'm not sure if I'll finally be getting air conditioning in my room before summer, I pretty much put a fan on everything in lieu of messing about with liquid cooling:
With regard to fans, there is a fan inside the power supply with one case fan mounted on top and one at the back, one more on one side and two fitted at the front. The two front case fans blow over the HDD's (open grill at the front, excellent air flow) which themselves have heatsink HDD coolers fitted to them. The two RAM sticks have three fans fitted each and of course there is a fan over the CPU assembly - which I'll eventually replace with something a little beefier when I can find something (affordable) I like for my Phenom chip.
I have an N260 OC'ed card which naturally has a fan itself. So in total, there are 14 fans of various sizes inside the (Antec Three Hundred) case under my desk. I was pleasently surprised to find that it didn't sound like I had Sydney International in my bedroom.

Put a furnace filter on the box fan. It will catch a lot of the dust.

My intake fan is an 80mm fan (highest CFM I could find) jury-rigged into the space of two empty CD drive bays in the front of my computer, held in place by electrician's tape. Covering the hole in the front of the computer is some window screening, held in place by, yep, electrician's tape. The intake fan blows directly over the CPU fan, and directly into the 120mm (again, highest CFM I could find) exhaust fan which blows out the back. The result is a nice cool crossbreeze from which the CPU fan can suck air from and blow through and onto the heatsink. I took off the crappy thermal pad that the heatsink came from and replaced it with Arctic Silver 5.
Before installing intake fan, exhaust fan, and Arctic Silver 5, idle temps were in the 50's, heavy use temps were at 69 C, which is juuuuuuuust below the point where CPU's start to get damaged.
After the installation of everything, idle temps are now low 30's, heavy use temps max out at 55. Cost me about 20 bucks total.
Oh, also, an Antec VCool Video Card Cooler sits in 2 empty PCI slots, directly underneath the video card. It sucks in air from behind the computer and blows it onto the vidcard. Lowered my peak vidcard temps by like 15 C, cost like 10 bucks.

Water system
Works great for those custom rigs. Now that is not the system I put in but I don't think you want to build your water system so you can buy a complete system.
For my laptop, I have rigged in a larger fan.
PS I had some fun times as I researched and played with building my water system. For those who would think of doing it, I would recommend that you try it. Plus its fun to see your whole system black out do to lack of water tight valves.

Just put an EVE ship into your sig and it's 'EVE related'
I also use a fan myself, however a friend of mine did put some sort of cooling bag in his computer (to the side). I have no clue though what it is exactly, need to ask him.

Edited by: Druadan on 11/09/2008 09:26:17 Now that's a cooling solution I can get on board with.
My current cooling is three 120mm chassis fans. At the moment they're all blowing air out, which means the only in-flow is through the CPU's intake fan and cowl. I'm considering turning the fan in the front of the case around, as it blows out through the door on the front of my case, which is clad in some metal that seems to just stay cold. If I turn the fan around then it will suck in air over the cool metal, which should be beneficial. The only uncertainty is how that effects the pressure of the CPU's intake flow. Due to some airflow issues, I usually play with the side panels of my case open to let some more air in. (downside to this, more dust gets in too. Have to clean my GPU fan every week) Closing the case doesn't cause any serious problems, but it gets rather loud as all the fans spin up in the increasing temperature. Since my case sits at about ear height I'd rather have it open and quiet than closed and noisy.
