How much "Text" do you need?
I would recommend Zork I/II/III, Witness and Planetfall if you're looking at strict text-only games.
If you can stand a bit of ASCII, you can get yourself addicted with Angband, Rogue, or the new classic Dwarf Fortress.
Now if you want to go in a MMO direction, you can't go wrong with anything ending in -MUD, -MUSH, or -MOO.
For purely nostalgic reasons, I would also suggest doing a search for "BBS DOORS" and checking out sites that host games of LORD (Legend of the Red Dragon), TradeWars 2002, BRE/SRE, and The Pit. //// ---------=== []= ---------=== \\\\ Rifter(RedBad)

Ancient Domains of Mystery isn't an internet-based game, but it is text-based Rogue-like game. I much prefer this over Nethack or Angband.

How about ZZT? Or do ASCII based action/adventure games not count as text?

Number/textbased "strategy" games. Used to play it 10 years ago. Was good fun.

What was the game in the early 80's that when you went in to a dark room with out a light you were going to be eaten by a Grue?

Zork.
> what is a grue?
The grue is a sinister, lurking presence in the dark places of the earth. Its favorite diet is adventurers, but its insatiable appetite is tempered by its fear of light. No grue has ever been seen by the light of day, and few have survived its fearsome jaws to tell the tale.

Surprised no one has mentioned "Legend of the Green Dragon".
There are hundreds of various servers out there, all with varying attributes and differences. It's alot like the old BBS game LORD (legend of the Red Dragon) but more in-depth and updated. Very fun until you reach godly levels having defeated the Dragon 40+ times.

Oh man. I remember hosting my own BBS then playing around with the date/time just so I could play that game more.
Thanks for the (good/bad) memories.

if you are into the space theme, tradewars 2002. I played it for quite a while back in the dial up days. I think there are still games running somewhere. jake siskos favorite alt |

Not seen a server version, is that just nethack but with shared 'bones' files? If so I could arrange for it to be hosted.... tomorrow

Tried it with this graphics pack yet? Makes an already awesome game epic.

Trade wars is more or less eve with ascii graphics. (if any, depends on the version)
Zork is awesome.
NetHack is a must play.
ShadowMUD is pretty awesome if you like Shadowrun the RPG (pen and paper, not that MS FPS bullshit they put out a while ago)
