But it is cute to see armchair warriors try to belittle the sense of responsibility that accounts for a person to show up at your door when you lie in a pool of your own blood. They don't get paid much.
Also, wrong forum.
I think you need a reality check... The red cross pays better than most of the employers in the places they operate most (the southern states). Yes, there are volunteers but they don't account for any significant portion of the permanent staff. They are mighty helpful in times of need though.
Secondly, if you think "responsibility" is what gets most people into the red cross, you're off your rocker. I suggest you talk to someone that actually works for the RC. They are some of the most cynical people I've ever met.
My apartment building burned down and the red cross helped us out with hotel rooms and basic stuff like a toothbrush. At the time I was super grateful so I volunteered to go with the RC group to their next disaster site (which they were trucking out to that night), I did so, and found that most of the people involved in the RC are retired old timers that have nothing better to do and don't care at all about anything but the pretense of caring.
Your mileage may vary. ______________________________________________ Goon FC(08/12/06):"its a trap" "that thing is fully operational" |

Why the request for blood donation? Was there any particularly large number of casualties? Also if it is my responsibility, here's a link http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/7593586.stm 500,000 people are currently displaced in Bihar india due to a river breaking its banks and completely changing course. I'm not meaning to disparage your attempts rells, they are certainly worth while, perhaps especially so for americans. As a non-american, i see a developed country capable of looking after its own, especially in such minor matters as property damage. When i see the helpless of places such as India, which have very poor levels of governmetn at the local level, that's when my heart breaks.

I wasn't talking about the Red Cross. Nonetheless, surface cynicism is generally a coping mechanism for emergency reponse. I'd highly recommend not listening on EMTs after a call either if that offended you.
And really, I'm not one to jump in on fake internet sympathy threads but it really was a simple post without the need to wax philosophical about "responsibility." I'm not donating. I'm broke. _ |

Originally by: Rells With two successive hurricanes hitting the USA gulf states, there are a lot of people that are hard pressed these days. AGONY itself has 2 members that are living more or less in the path of these monster storms.
As human beings I feel it is our obligation to help others so I am asking Eve Citizens to take a moment of their time and help out their fellow man. There are many things oyu can do to help. Donations to the American Red Cross even in small amounts of 25$ will add up quickly. You can also go and donate blood at your local hospital. For those that have the ability you can help create care packages for those displaced by the hurricane. Again you can call the American Red Cross to learn about how you can help.
We are all astonishingly lucky that we have the means to play a game like Eve and we all have a responsibility to share some of our good fortune with others.
I wish all those in the gulf the best of luck.
Why dont you ask the US government to donate more money? They can afford making 2 wars and now trying to start one with Russia, so I am pretty sure they can handle the cost affecting these hurricanes. Even if they did not care last time...
When I donate money to red cross it is to help people and countries who cant afford buying foodstuffs and housing. US can. Start asking there first. I am sure they are more then willing this time, seeing its an election coming up...

I do not like the OP, but I will agree to his message, I have convinced my company to donate $40 for each employee to the red cross. Donating blood to assist in the current troubles will have less effect since we live in Sweden, but I will try to find other direct methods of assisting.
Any ideas?

Geee, and you needed to share that usefull piece of information with the rest of us.
The OP might have been a bit blunt but i bet his heart is in the right place, if people want to help then by all means do so, personally i think we should all help in these cases, wether its in the USA or in some God forsaken place.
Its easy to see the people that never had to deal with these problems take every confort for granted and have the audacity to call life miserable...

Nice to see some recognition of this. I made a post a few nights ago about it, before I left town. I live right between Galveston and Houston and haven't been able to go back home yet.
I don't think it should be forced upon anyone to help anyone else, but like everything else, if you have the means, help your fellow man. That doesn't mean send me or red cross your money, help the world in whatever way you choose, this may not be the issue you want to support.
Just as an update, Houston proper is estimated to be without power for the next 2-4 weeks. Galveston, who knows, they got ****d hard.
Anyone who makes negative comments about this and refers to Katrina, just remember, Houston opened our town to the victims of Katrina, and for the kindness, our crime rate went up 60% almost overnight. This is an area with alot of good, kind people (and some shit heads, like everywhere else), but we all know the risks of living near the coast, and obviously feel it's worth it.

Just read a bit more of this thread and:
Please die in a fire(in game) if you feel the need to bring up the president or political bullshit in this thread.
Also: Yes, alot of people in the world are having a rough time, disasters happen everywhere. Its just not alot of eve players are from India, or Myanmar, or Darfur, or Georgia or (enter place that has been screwed over lately). But there are quite a few texans, or people who know texans. So dont be so damn surprised when people mention it. If you want to make a thread about donating to one of those unfortunate countries, go ahead, I'm sure it will spiral into flames much like this one has.
Cheers :)
