Edited by: Ademaro Imre on 13/09/2008 20:23:22 Cleared: Jury decides that threat of global warming justifies breaking the law
Amazing. Breaking down a door of a building that is on fire is akin to demolishing a power plant. This is what the the global warming nutcases have pushes ordinary people to do, in juries, to acquit criminals. The aim of politics is to keep the populace alarmed and clamorous to be saved by menacing it with imaginary hobgoblins. The urge to save humanity is a false front for the urge to rule it. |

Writing 'Gordon' on a chimney is hardly terrorism
The jury probably took into account that what they were attempting to do was to raise awareness and protest - non violently - rather than cause criminal damages. I'd agree a legal loophole seems to have been exploited, but I doubt it's going to set a dangerous precedent and cause a massive outburst of graffiti and protests up and down the country.

Anarchy in the UK!
35k to put Gordon on a building? Is that devaluation?
I know people think hes bad but his name depreciates buildings now? That guy can't catch a break!

Sounds good to me.

the worst part about this is that these fools are protesting modern and more efficient power plants being built to replace the old ones. Also they protest regardless, wanna build a coal power plant? what about CO2, want to build a nuke plant? what about chernobyl and nuclear waste? want to build a windmill? what about the noise and ruining our beautiful skylines?

LOL
So, just so I get this right I would have a "lawful excuse" to rob a bank if I could convince a jury of my peers that the contents of a bank vault was going to be used to cause 'damage'. I would obviously have to deprive the bank of it's vaults contents... hmmm ~~~~ There is no parody in this thread. Honest. |

Apparently, I can read better than you. I did not quote the article, I extended their logic. This is a quote from the article, from a defendent;
Quote: When a jury of normal people say it is legitimate for a direct action group to shut down a coal-fired power station because of the harm it does to our planet, ...
This is another quote from the article summarizing the defense;
Quote:
They insisted their action had caused the minimum amount of damage necessary to close the plant down and constituted a "proportionate response" to the increasing environmental threat.
Now, the plant is operating as usual again. What will their next proportional response be since the plant is operating normally again? Perhaps demolishing it. Perhaps following the likes of PETA.
