The setup which renders and provides the forum portraits has been experiencing technical difficulties for a while now. Restarting the service helps but eventually it falls over again. Our operations team are working with the hardware providers to figure out what is wrong and get a more reliable fix applied. Unfortunately we do not have a firm timeline for when service will be restored.

Meanwhile (this is a Windows server, right?):
:start TASKKILL /F /IM portraitgen.exe portraitgen.exe --service @ping 127.0.0.1 -n 180 -w 1000 > NUL goto start
The "ping" command causes the shell to pause execution* for 3 minutes (there's a SLEEP command available for the Windows command prompt, but it's only in the resource kit). The rest is just boilerplate that you can modify as you see fit to kill and then restart an imaginary "portraitgen.exe" command.
Now, I'll be the first to admit that one should fix the underlying problems, not just patch the system. But that said, surely this is better than the current nothing!

*: Yes, I know it actually eats a few cycles, and yes, I realize it won't be exactly three minutes. So sue me; it's damn close.

So, it's low on CCP's list of priorities in other words - I know it's had problems in the past, but it's been down for what, almost a week now?
On a more serious note, why do you render the images each time? (Or if that's not the case, that's what it sounded like). Surely after they've been rendered initially the simple solution would be to save them to the server a a jpg (or whatever format you happen to be using) file, and simply access it via a different script. ie. http://img.eve.is/view.asp?s=64&c=1821100643 and then check for changes to character portraits every now and then and update where necessary etc.
Edit: Funny how i've never seen this problem over at EVE-Search.com - I guess they just do a good job of backing up everything... plus the search function is actually usable, when the site is working properly... maybe you should ask Chribba for a hand.

EVE-Search runs its own avatar cache nowdays, to prevent it from looking odd when things like this happen.
The cache can be easily used by requesting the same page (serv.asp) as on CCP's servers, as well if you repoint img.eve.is to the EVE-Search IP it has been set up to listen on that hostname as well, so with a manual edit of your "hosts" file, you can get working avatars via EVE-Search.

@Chribba - Nice one, will remember that for next time.

Seems like CCP fixed their image servers now anyhow - or at least rebooted it or something as the images are working again at the moment , finally got my Character portrait back on Capsuleer (an iPhone skill monitor) --- Founder, CEO - Legion of Ascension |
