I have started having a problem after installing xp sp3. Previous to this I have been running 2 instances of the client with no problems at all. After the XP sp3 "update" I can run anywhere from 2-3 minutes up to as long as 2-3 hours before the system spontaneously reboots. Removal of xp sp3 has seemed to not resole the issue. I have the latest version of drivers for my video card (G-Force 6200) and yet it still reboots as described above.
I believe that the sp3 installation made changes to system settings that did not change back after removal of sp3, causing this problem, but that is just an armchair diagnosis. My real concern is losing a BS in the middle of a lvl 4 mission, when I come back from one of these reboots, my cap is gone and half my armor is depleted. If this happens at the wrong time, I lose a 140mil BS.
Has anybody else had this or a similar problem?
Seeking the solution, D_D

Turn off reboot on error, how to is mentioned here in this channel a couple of times. Then you should get a BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) instead.
Write down and Google the error code or come back here and we'll try to help you out.

Spontaneous reboots are frequently caused by overheating problems.
Download the program Speedfan, and check you temps and see if any of them are really spiking while you play.

Make sure 'automatically reboot' is disabled. If it is still happening then it could be a hardware issue. Random reboots are usually characteristic of psu problems. Check the voltages(including under load) with a good multimeter. If that seem to be nominal, it's a good idea to run memtest also to see if your memory is the culprit.

I had this problem and it turned out that it was due to the sound card driver. As well as the advice mentioned above check your event logs. |
