HI,
im emepror, 15 in RL and im working up the cash to spend the most mosney ill probabl ever spend till college cones around, the setup is as follows:
case of my choice (e-atx) nehalem performance CPU tylersburg x58 motherboard starting with 2 gigs of ram ( to increase to 6 later on so i can cut costs) 750gig HD 900w PSU ( those cool customizabl power cable ones) 9800 gx2 GPU (future SLI) 1 cd drive 1 usb floppy drive (stupid floppy disk bios updates) PCI network card
im probably missing something but anything you can tell me :)
few things: -im looking around 1200-1600 dollar price tag -i want it by july 20th to take to quakecon -i need ways to make extra cash for both QC and the chance i may need 2 grand plz rate my setup -i know the nehalem and tylersburg are not out yet but that is the core of my setup now that me and my friend have decided these are the closest thing we have to god processors right now -anything else you can add!!
ohh and sry if this is in the wrong forum and if this is a giant wall of text

- Don't need a networking card, onboard ones might use a bit of CPU power but on average have lower latency. - As per poster above, keep to 'normal' Mobo's; DFU lanparty is good, or a decent ASUS or whatever. Exotic mobo's make for exotic problems. - get 4 GB right away, it costs almost nothing these days and if you use vista 64 (and you should) it really helps a ton. 6 GB is an odd number. Get 2, 4 or 8. - forget about SLI, either do it now or don't plan for it. There's a lot of restrictions when using SLI and trying to get a similar card months (year?) afterwards is quite impossible. - CD drive wth, DVD burner costs nothing. - get 2HDD's instead of one, put the OS and swapfile on one, games and crap on the other. THAT gives you a performance increase. Superfast Raptor X (or even 2) is fantastic. - get a PROPER brand PSU and I mean proper brand, no shitty unkown/unbranded crap no matter how good it looks. Try to find reviews and comparisons on the net before you make your choice and don't believe the numbers.

Edited by: CynoAlt1 on 18/09/2008 09:35:37 I didn't realise nehalem CPUs and x58 motherboard were available yet. In fact, I'm pretty sure they're not. And if you want it by July, you'll never get them for a price low enough to keep within your budget.
Forget about SLI. For one thing, your board won't support it. Secondly, you're going to have a beast of a time finding an identical graphics card for a decent price in the distant future - and by that time, there will be single card solutions which do the job better. If you really MUST use a dual graphics card setup, you're going to have to use ATI cards. The Radeon HD4850 is a good choice. ATI crossfire is better than SLI anyway because it doesn't restrict you to a single monitor.
Don't bother with a floppy drive. You can do bios updates with a USB stick.
Good luck finding a pure CD drive these days. Go for a DVD drive, they're cheap enough.
Make sure you don't skimp on the PSU. A lot of PSU manufacturers actually LIE about how much power their units can output. And they get away with it. Corsair is a good brand. Hyper isn't.
Edit: as for raising the cash, get a job. Probably too late for a summer job, but if you work all through the Christmas and Easter holidays, you might just get enough money together.

I'd personally hit an Asus Mobo instead of DFI LanParty. DFI are pimp but are *****y with their memory.
And for cash, since you're in the USA (I assume)
Do something typical that all American kids do when they need money. Sell lemonade, mow lawns, do chores at that old ladies house across the street...

Seasonic Makes very good quality psu's if not the best. Amd 4870 graphics cards are best price / performance atm. you can buy second one later on. Or wait for 55nm Geforce 260 GTX cards (are out just around the corner) _________________________________ -be vary of the men behind the curtain-

1. Dont know if you really need a 900w PSU. There are a few online calculators that will tell you the real draw that your setup will pull ... use that to figure out what you *really* need.
2. I'd recommend an Antec case with an included PSU. Antec PSU are good, and their cases are nice too.
3. Go for 4 gigs of ram ... is cheap these days, its worth it.
4. Use an onboard NIC ... PCI ones are not worth it anymore.
5. You dont need a floppy disk ... all MB have online BIOS update things these days.
6. get a 500 gig HDD ... doubt you need 750.

Edited by: emepror on 18/09/2008 22:31:46 well i like the 9800GX2 because it has the 2 GPU in 1 and the reviews arent that bad
for those who say forget about the nehalem and tylersberg.... 3 things: -they are coming in november - and no...i want it cuase of the huge preformance upgrade...plus the LGA 1366 which seems like its going to be the ned LGA 775 - the prices are actually quite reasonable.... seems about $315 for the basic one $500 for performance
but i have gotten some good stuff from the posts. - thanks for the tip about the HD thing, the way it sounded looks like its gona run alot better - no need for floppy anymore!!!!! -and i know i've missed something just dont know what
i dont want ati either...i kinda shun ati/amd

Edited by: Eternal Error on 18/09/2008 22:39:29 9800 GX2 sucks now, will even more by the time you're ready for nehalem. You want 4 gigs of RAM. 900w PSU is not necessary for what you have listed. Network card is a waste. Do you really need that big of an HD?
Also, certain comments in your posts make it pretty clear you have done limited research. Do more.

Nahalem will be useless until software is developed to use multiple cores.
Future proofing doesn't work. A decent present proofed computer will last you at least 2 years, not to mention it costs half the price and you can just buy another for the same whenever you need it two years down, that would perform better than a future-proofed one from now.

Why does everyone say you don't need <insert number over 200> whenever someone is talking about hard drives? My next build is going to have a 1tb internal along with a 15k raptor. I am quite sure I need that space because atm I have about 2.3 TB of full external drives sitting around me.

Actually, no.
He'll have 4 slots, so if he gets 2 first that's (2x1), 2 slots used. Then he adds 4 making a total of 6. Which means that to get MORE he needs to remove the (2x1) and replace it. If he gets 4 right away that means he'll have (2x2) leaving room for 4 more totalling 8. Gunning for 6GB ram is dumb, either get 4 or 8.
With a proper PC, 4GB ram you'll almost never use your swapfile, unless you do videoediting, 3D work or possibly games. So unless he does massive graphics stuff he'll want to separate his swapfile and his games. Windows is quite hapy with the 4GB actual memory.

I have 2 Raptor X, one for windows and assorted, one for games and stuff. And I have a 250 GB dump drive. I regularly clean up by removing old stuff, deinstalling programs and old games to keep it clean and fast. I guess I use about 1/3 of my total capacity if at all. But I wanted the Raptors and I wanted that specific 250GB HDD for it's speed.
Thing is people go by numbers because they think that higher number are automatically better since they lack actual knowledge, while actually forgetting about the numbers that REALLY matter. That's what marketing and advertising makes em believe and do.
Apart from the people who actually DO use the HDD space, but most people have no clue... not really.
