Originally by: Ravenesa I know the moniker of buy low, sell high, but there is always more to it then that.
Profit = sum of { item x volume traded * [ item x sell order value - item x buy order value - appliable taxes ] } -> taxes between 3% at no skills, no standings, down to barely around 1% at max skills, max standings That's really all there is, math-wise. But after that, it gets complicated.
Yeah, doesn't really matter if margin is low (as long as it's at least a bit above total taxes), if only the volume is high... don't bother with low volumes unless margin is EXTREMELY high... at least, not later on. At the very start, anything is good, to "form your hand" : you know, make sure you're NOT accidentally press an extra zero... or three... or put a "," instead of a "." or other such HORRIBLE mistakes. The TAB key is your friend, NEVER press ENTER (not even by accident), always use mouse click on "OK" after TAB instead.
Also, look at number of competing order pairs (from other traders)... watch how they move (if at all), when they might be online... unless you think you can be online at least as or even more often than them, don't bother even trying on high-potential items... you'd be just wasting an order slot pair and lose money on orders never filled. So, you MIGHT want to avoid big hubs and huge profit potential per day items at the start, until you get the hang of it.
You MIGHT want to also mix in a bit of hauling at the start (just make sure you use either a really fast aligning ship OR a decently tanked one), be it between hubs (mission hub <-> big regional trade hub <-> local minor trade hub <-> lowsec/0.0 verge hub <-> R&D hub etc) or between regions (racial-specific BPOs/skillbooks for instance), just to move things a bit faster... but as you expand, learn to just trade in a single spot (and if you see a bargain, snatch it and use courier contracts to move it slowly and hopefully relatively cheap to your sales location).
Well, that should be... a start.
