Dyslexia mostly makes it hard to read. Specifically, it makes it hard to comprehend the symbols as sounds.
If you can read well, but can't spell for shit, you don't have dyslexia, you just failed at school and are failing at life.
Also, this thread is pointless. Use a built-in spellchecker (firefox/google chrome) to automatically spellcheck your posts. English is my third language, and I prefer to admit that I ****ed up when I spell something wrong, rather than coming up with lame excuses "zomg, it's not my native language".
If you make so many mistakes, use a spellchecker or use forums in your own language.
Head arse pull it out of...dyslexia does effect spelling not just reading.
I myself have this condition and my actual reading is fine (well better than fine actually), it also affects my hearing (strange but true) and really puts the boot into maths as well.
Oh and BTW I was diagnosed with it in the 80s well before it became a well known condition. ========= "I am not saying there should be capital punishment for stupidity, but why can`t we just take the safety labels off everything and let the problem fix its self |

That is not written in english.
The english language is read left to right, moving down each line.
Conforming to english reading standards when applied to the english language, your message makes no sense.

god damn not another one....
Quote: Dyslexia is considered to be a learning disability. It manifests primarily as a difficulty with written language, particularly with reading and spelling. It is separate and distinct from reading difficulties resulting from other causes, such as a non-neurological deficiency with vision or hearing, or from poor or inadequate reading instruction.

Spellcheckers, lexicons (i think? english is actually not my first language ^_^) and proper sentence structures tbfh, no real excuse to not use the tools avaible if your education is sub-par in english
Simply becouse if you can't be botherd typing properly, you can be sure as hell that nobody can be botherd trying to read it and care |

That would be reading comprehension, not dyslexia Einstein. I lead you to the second part of your quote:

I read just fine although I'm not a fan of it, but I tend to mix up vowels when writing. I never failed school, and I certainly am not failing life. Good day to you.

Why people take everything so seriously is completely beyond me.
My point was, that a basic spellchecker solves most of the problems. Doesn't seem like anyone has grasped it. EW Guide - Music Downloader - My Music |

Last I checked spellcheck isn't an option ingame.

Edited by: P''uck on 25/09/2008 15:41:07 I always thought dyslexia can be treated, especially when recognized early, unless it's a really heavy case. Which don't occur that often.
At least the dyslexic kids I went to school with all could read and write properly at about the age of 10. They still said it was hard for them, but they pulled it off properly and didnt make any more mistakes than the rest of the class.
edit: But I guess these days you're a political incorrect bastard if you expect people to get their act together... well, I for one shouldn't judge anybody, as I'm probably the laziest mother****er that ever lay on the face of earth.

Nah my friend has always had a serious case of it. He's smart in the sense that he knows tons of words, big words, like them edumukated people use, he just can't spell them for shit most of the time.
Unlike me his house is loaded with books and he can get through a book within hours with no issues. He's really good at essays in way of getting the point across but you just need a translator to read it. Usually he just uses me for his spellcheck while we're in game or something.
Even though he was diagnosed with it early on a lot of his teachers gave him poor grades due to spelling which led to lots of rebellious nature at school. If it weren't for the spelling he would probably would have been top of his class.

That doesn't really sound like proper treatment, tho. From what I gathered in the forums here, I wonder if you crazy amerikaner even have those special classes few times a week for dyslexic kids.
We had those, I think it was like 4 hours a week, in primary school. The easy cases only had to attend a year and a half tops, the heavier ones needed more treatment, but in the end there wasn't a single kid I knew that couldnt be brought to the same level as the rest of us.
Sure, I expect there are people in much worse conditions, but I think they are pretty rare.

Treat? No. Compensate yes, well to a certain degree its possible. Learning to compensate for it is probably better dona as early as can be done though.

I researched just a wee bit, because this thread remembered me that my best friend was dyslexic back then and they painted his left pinky fingernail red, so he would remember where "left" is. I asked him what else they did in this class and he had kind of a hard time explaining it.
Those ****ers acted as if it was a secret society or something
Anyways, the intarwebs call it "treatment" and yes, they also say, it's easiest when they are young, and it gets harder with every untreated year that passes.
And since its just a different way of how the brain processes the information compared to us "normal" folks, you probably just have to reinvent the way of teaching it. Because most teachers just would assume the brains of their pupils work alike.
Just imagine you got a teacher on acid that assumes everybody can smell colors. Just like an average teacher assumes everybody can hear letters...
I mean, that IS a weird concept after all.

Preaching to the choir here .
But unluckly for my self although I was diagnosed at about age 11 or so it was not really a reconised condidtion when I was at school, so that kindia ****ed up my school years good and proper.
But it always confuses me when "normal" folks can't operate the way I do, on the brightside it does seem to have pluses as well as minuses.
But for the just use a spellchecker twonkers, it only helps when you get close enuff to the word for it to pick up on what your trying to get. This does not always happen or you get a choice of words and none of them look right.
Personally I would rahter have a misspelt word that can be understood in context rather than i correctly spelt one that is not the word you are wanting to use. ========= "I am not saying there should be capital punishment for stupidity, but why can`t we just take the safety labels off everything and let the problem fix its self |
