I read a post that made me think of this thread. What does Eve have for backup? What if under some extraordinary circumstances the entire database and backups were lost? I understand I'm sure somewhere in the agreement CCP hold no responsibility in such a scenario. How would you take it?

I'd leave likely. Plus I hope they have some form of multiple redundancies in case of backups failing.

it does offer a lot of options...
55% quit 45% start all over again and avoid a lot of mistakes i've made in 5 years

Pretty sure they've got a pretty serious combination of on- and off-site backup solutions, enough that in the event of a catastrophic failure you wouldn't see much lost in the worst case scenario.
The real pain in the ass would be rebuilding the cluster, hardware wise.

Honestly, they got a pretty good return on investment over the past 5 years that the game has been running, and I can see the game continuing to run for another 5, but maybe not much more past that.
Depending on what is "lost" and what you mean by "everything", however, the loss could be much more painful for CCP than it is for us. We just lose characters; imagine if they lose the actual code, art assets, etc etc., everything they've put effort into over the past 5 years.
Imagine if they had to code, from scratch, everything they've done thus far. Would they even choose to (re)make a space MMO?

I was thnking about this the other day, if they did somehow lose everything and started again, assuming they would put in place a massive multiplier to skills, I'd start again for sure and go down a different route than previous.

I think they would start over, make it bigger and better. Afterall, don't they have to rewrite a bunch of the game to work with inifiband/multi core cpus?

You should get 2 trusted person to vouchsafe the number of SP, skills and assets you had. Then you will do the same for them.
Then CCP will nerf all officer loot to T1 characteristic and Faction ships to less than T1 ships and all will be almost normal.

I dunno. I have pretty high hopes for Ambulation being a starting point for a new direction of development that will let Eve move beyond being (just) internet spaceships. At its core, Eve is far more flexible than any other MMO-type game I've ever played or really looked into, no reason to assume it can't continue to grow and expand as long as the devs are willing to keep pushing the horizons out.
Anyway.. if the server blew up tomorrow, I don't think anything would really change much. The same alliances would end up controlling most of 0.0 (albeit in different places), the same people would end up hanging out in lowsec and complaining about POS wars, and the same people would sit in empire and complain they don't have enough SPs to compete (how they would justify this would be amusing, but I can't fathom how they would do it, just that they would).
Only 0.0 would be even more static than it is now - it takes like an hour to train the skills to put up a POS, maybe a month for the skills to man the guns.. dreads take over a year to fly worth a crap. ---

If I got to keep my name, I'd probably stay. Otherwise, I'd probably leave.
The longer I play, the more I realise that your name is pretty much all you have anyway.

To be honest, I dont know how I would take it before I get into this very unlikely situation. I can say that I will quit, but I love the game so the chance is I would do the oposite and restart. I could also say that I would restart, only to be discouraged about having to earn back like 50 million sp and all my hard earned cash. So I have no clue at all how I would take it.

I'd be ****ed of course, but I wouldn't mind all that much having to start over. I'd be able to undo some of the stupid trainings I've done I suppose and actually put all my SP to good use.

Think about it though...
All of us who are vets, would know that the first thing you do is train the learning skills.
or. do you train BS skills ASAP so you can rush out and claim some space?
Or.. do you train cap skills asap so you can use caps...
hmm.. decisions decisions..
then again... Noone would be able to buy char's with isk for a fairly long time..

I can't see veteran players be willing to start over, but what about a new universe/server in future, running alongside the current one? Is that feasible?

If all the hard drives failed, collapsing what I'm sure are many RAID-5 arrays, and they ended up without a backup, whomever does their server admin work would (or should) be driven from the IT field with a whip.
AT MINIMUM they should have a DB backup to a backup storage array AND tape backups of that array. This is what any legit data center does.
They should be doing a backup before doing any DB work as well.
Most egregious example ever of **** poor server administration for a MMO ever was the day of the infamous "Combat Downgrade" of Star Wars Galaxies in April 2005. Two servers, Bloodfin (which I played on) and Chimaera had their DB migrations go wrong. SOE didn't have a CURRENT backup of them prior to installing the "Combat Downgrade" and had to restore backups that were 3 days and 2 weeks old respectively.
If any sysadmin did that anywhere else with valuable customer data that is LITERALLY your business they'd have been fired. Not at SOE, apparently, but then again the "No Game Experience" that came out later that same year which deleted more than half the game (and 80-90% of the subscribers) hasn't caused John Smedley or anyone else to be fired so I suppose working on MMO's is like government work.

What if once every other week the mind of every poster has been wiped and this gets posted again and again and again? How will the same pilots response differ, is it dependent of season, financial ebb and tides or perhaps Mars being in the house of Jupiter?

Honestly I couldn't tell you if I'd come back or not. I can tell you there'd be massive, jaw dropping "wtf!?" going on for sure.
Then I'd be sitting in my Ibis thinking of my lost Nightmare and CNR and just hit delete/cancel.
