i guess it would work if the customizations were only using a limited set of graphic options, so instead of downloading textures to the client, it would just need some display parameters for the color and texture selections.
yah, ;like the corp logo thingies? those have limted colours and stuff, but you can create much variations.
that wold work, i think.

Something equally "important", imo. If there is to, at some point, be the option of customizing clothing,,, how about rank-insignia (i know,, i know,, itty-gritty work,, but if they do some premeasured standards (like with signatures) there should be little issue on it imo) for placement (i.e.) on the collars and either shoulders or (for the "original" Fleet-look) the end of the sleeves?
Just my 2-isk,

In some other MMO its resolved pretty easily. Custom clothes = heavy load on the server. Instead they add lots of different clothes, that you can put on your avatar. A dedicated proffession of tailoring would be a good idea. And a brand new market, too.
To add some thought to the words...
Tailoring - general skill needed to make plain gray clothes Hat maker - needs Tailoring V and gives ability of making hats Optic - needs Tailoring I for making those oh-so-cool sunglasses Coloring - needs Tailoring III and allows adding different color to clothes, also allows adding custom logos - like Guristas logo for example, or just corp badge
Tailoring in general should need some tools, available to be built off blueprints Blueprints - for tool and clothing - could be bought off NPCs. Materials for this profession could be either seeded from NPCs or just added to NPC market.
I don't mean make World of .. Evecraft from EvE. Thats not te point. Just allow cool people to look cool too ;)

Not going to happen. If you look at the clothes from some of the videos, they're all normal-mapped, phong-shaded specularity-mapped, cloth-simmed pieces of minor technical wizardry. They look nice, but I daresay they're beyond the limits of any conceivable in-game editor to create. -

Grabbing an example from recent game releases, Spore's creature creator does a rather good job of generating normal + specular maps and such somewhat on the fly. It's helped along by having set possible combinations of paterns and colors, but the customization is certianly there.

If you watch the videos that have been released. All the cloths are going to be designed by a fashion designer that CCP have hired. They have said specifically that game designers do not produce good cloths to much rubber, vinal and clear items. They were not 100% clear on being able to walk around the station nude but give this games age rating I would be supprised if we do not come with a default set of underwear we cannot remove. Macrointel, the place were the nature order of the universe does not hold sway. Pirates and ore thief's are congrated by carebears for the actions. |

I would also guess that there will be at least a default set of plain clothes, for everyone to wear.
Given the mentality of many EVE players, they would otherwise run around naked or only in underwear.

The problem with custom clothes is that eventualy someone will make a tight fitting garment with boobs or a **** painted on as the texture or maybe even a rendered naked body as the entire texture or worse. You know it will happen.

I remember reading an article that said CCP was going to prevent that by imposing limited color palettes on clothing choices.

I say they only allow custom ship paint jobs if it's on a per SHIP basis. IE: You can make a Hello-Kitty kestrel, it's the ONLY one of your Kestrel stable that looks that way, and you can't save the paint pattern and have to MANUALLY re-design it if it gets popped. Also, paint jobs don't survive repackaging, and all imported design elements (logos, jpeg skins, etc.) have to be pre-approved by CCP.
That would keep the number of stupid paint jobs to a minimum. You can make the Hello Kitty kestrel, but you had better know that EVERY pirate in the game will be gunning for you JUST for the satisfaction of ruining several hours of your work.

Definitly, no mods to the client (forbidden by the EULA). As to options: you'd be given a limited set of options to choose, much like what you have today, but as other said, designed by a fashion designer If you want to have a preview, see the Flickr album. As for user submitted, CCP approved content, look what's happening to alliance logos (a lot of months without the ability to send your alliance logo). So very imrpobable (near impossible, I'd say). Don't worry, you still have Imagine Fashion Designer, by Crappysoft. ----

Space includes space stations, planets, clothes.
And a lot of stuff that's not ingame either.

It's also supposed to be a roleplaying game. But that is a fact that is often forgotten by most. It's not like it's really going to affect you anyway, you never have to get out of your pod if you don't want to. |
