Like quite a few other people here, I can no longer connect to EVE following the WAR 1.1.1 / 1.1.2 patches. Prior to the patches I was a able to connect to EVE without issue.
I am experiencing a couple of symptoms:
1) At client start up server status is 'unknown' 2) Entering a user name and password starts showing the 'authenticating' progress bar but after a few second a pop-up window is displayed stating "Connection Failed. The socket was closed" 3) I can connect to EVE from other PCs on my home network without issue
Following the various Dev suggestions in these pages I have attempted the following actions / investigations to try and resolve the problem. None of these have worked:
1) Uninstalled EVE and installed WAR 1.1.2 from a fresh download
2) Turned off AV and AV firewall (windows firewall not used)
3) Tried connecting on both ports 26000 and 3724. Same result on both.
4) Issued the following telnet commands
telnet 87.237.38.200 26000 telnet 87.237.38.200 3724
both times session connected and provided the following output:
*~¦♠♦¦+☻┬-o q= +·p¦@♦├¦LIVE@ccp
5) Ran the pingplotter utility as described. No packet loss or high times reported
6) I have tried connecting with Proxifier running as suggested in some threads. This has not facilitated connection but it has shown some interesting results.
Proxifier output from EVE startup:
[22:12] ExeFile.exe - 87.237.39.199:80 open [22:12] ExeFile.exe - 87.237.39.199:80 open [22:12] ExeFile.exe - 87.237.38.200:26000 open [22:12] ExeFile.exe - 87.237.38.200:26000 close, 246 bytes sent, 46 bytes received [22:12] ExeFile.exe - 87.237.39.199:80 open [22:12] ExeFile.exe - 87.237.39.199:80 close, 474 bytes sent, 393 bytes received [22:12] ExeFile.exe - 87.237.39.199:80 close, 496 bytes sent, 376 bytes received [22:12] ExeFile.exe - 87.237.39.199:80 close, 382 bytes sent, 262 bytes received
It looks like the 26000 socket is closed almost immediately. The timing matches an information message in the log server file. When I try and hit the 'connect' button I see the following network traffic through Proxifier:
[22:12] ExeFile.exe - 87.237.38.200:26000 open [22:12] ExeFile.exe - 87.237.38.200:26000 close, 596 bytes sent, 62 bytes received
This matches another log server file info message. Both display the following error:
Closing connection to 87.237.38.200:26000: {'reasonCode': None, 'reason': u'The socket was closed', 'exception': error(6, 'winsock error', 'IOCompletionWSARecv failed with error 6: The handle is invalid.\r\n failed with error 6: The handle is invalid.\r\
From the above results I believe that I have no internal firewall / network issues preventing me from connecting to the EVE server as the telnet and pingplotter results are good. My ISP is not giving problems as I can connect to EVE via other computers on the same network.
I suspect that the problem lies in the client code *somewhere* but I am at a loss as to how to resolve it.
Anyone any more ideas?
Cheers, Arrs

OK, after some more playing with Proxifier (and reading the instructions ) I can now connect. I installed the regular version of the application (rather than the portable one) and if I right-click the EVE client and select 'Proxifier' it connects through OK.
So, to me this says that something is screwy with my networking... The only thing installed recently was the patch... Firewall is off... I have no idea where to go next...
Help!

Having same issue here and followed the same steps as OP.
However after deleting the cache and settings folders and loading Eve, I could see the server and log in. Only issue is that after logging out and reloading Eve with the new cache and settings, I again get the server status "unknown".
I've tried repeating these steps 3 times, all with the same result. |

I have tried deleting the cache / settings folder and then trying to log in, but I still can't get through.
I have also tried installing the classic client but again no join in connecting.
No answer to my petition or bug report.
I suspect that the client has changed in some subtle way that is incompatible with further subtleties in my home network. As I can connect with no packet loss and low latency to the server via telnet the problem does not lie in the network per se. Likewise, as I can connect to EVE when using proxifier it is unlikely that the client is completely to blame.
However, as my network settings did not change between patches, something must have changed in the client.
Anyone with any more suggestions? I am at a complete loss here.
Cheers, Arrs

I downloaded the latest version of WinSock XP Fix from here, set a restore point, backed up the registry and tried it out. Worked a charm! EVE client can not connect and every other internet app still works.
So, the question remains as to what ****ed up my TCP/IP stack... The EVE patch was all I've installed recently...

I just bought the game (renewed my old subscription) and downloaded the latest clients... and no luck. Exact same symptoms as above.

I'm having the same problems..I downloaded proxifier, and even after allowing Eve through it, the Eve Client lags, whilst checking status. Then resumes telling me that tranq is offline.
I get error 10061 in proxifier, which is this:
WSAECONNREFUSED (10061) Connection refused. No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it. This usually results from trying to connect to a service that is inactive on the foreign hostùthat is, one with no server application running.
so, what's going on?

help please, anyone?
I have problems downloading the new patch and my client auto - patching doesn't work. Also, I cannot download any files from the eve website hoping to download the latest patches 1.1/1.2 manually.
Is it possible if anyone can provide me the latest patch files 1.1 and 1.2? please send me in my personal mail: [email protected].
Your help is most appreciated.
Regards, JJ

I just had the same problem as the OP, was playing on one account, logged off to swap a skill on another and got the status unknown Socket is closed thing.
I'd try what the op suggested but id probably irreparably break something with my computer knowledge.
I did just move so would a different isp make a difference?

I was having what seems to be the same problem the last several days. Proxifier, winsockfix and changing the port number made no difference at all. I have actually managed to log in today finally, but it's hit and miss and even when I do get connected, it keeps disconnecting after just a few minutes.
My situation is complicated by the fact that I've just moved and the only internet option in this godforsaken, middle-of-nowhere widespot-in-a-backroad place is satellite. I don't know if that's making the situation worse or even if it might be the actual problem.
Those who keep getting the "The Socket Was Closed" box, close it and hit the connect button again and just keep doing it. Sooner or later I bet you get in. I'd like to know if you manage to stay on or if it boots you off too.
I have a petition open and have been sending them pingplotter, dxdiag and logserver logs. Hopefully something will come of all that.

Having the same problems as the rest of ya'll. Scared to screw with my settings too much so any advice from someone with a fix would be great. Either all of our isps changed something right about when eve patch itself or there is some kinda glitch in CCP's new toy...

Edited by: Cao Yishang on 21/10/2008 15:35:48 Having the same problem as the OP.
I created my account yesterday, then I downloaded the latest Classic build of the Client, installed it, and attempted to connect.
At first I was actually able to, at least long enough to created a character and even reached the first image of space before my connection crashed down (lousy f!@*&>g wireless connection).
After finally stabilizing my connection, I retried connecting. Failed. I reinstalled again, and again, and again, and i wasn't able to gain one connection.
I then installed the Premium version and I had a little more success, reaching bulkdata loading, but stopping at 25/36. I disabled my firewall, then my antivirus, and finally installed the WinSockFix and it finally connected to the character selection, albeit quite laggy, probably because it was Premium.
This morning I reinstalled the Classic version, but it still refused to connect. Remains stuck at the "Authentificating" process. Useless to stay, I begin to lose my patience.
And I found something weird yesterday. People talk about the "cache" and "settings" folders in C:/Document and Settings/xxx/Application/CCP/EVE/tranquility... well that folder is completely empty. No "cache" and "settings" have been created.
