I know i'm beating a dead horse here, but there must be hundreds if not thousands of players out there who wish to change their characters name.
Obviously there are some options to consider: a new tab/panel on the character window would have to be added to show previous names of that particular person. (As suggested a lot in these topics)
It could be limited to perhaps, once per character, once every 6 months? once a year? although, with a name history on the character window, I see no reason for a time limit between changes.
They could make it a paid service, just like the portrait change service - i'm sure if they made a poll, they would get a lot of people voting Yes for this service, and from a business point of view they could make a lot more extra money from a service like this.
Has a developer ever mentioned this as becoming a possibility? I think it would be a great addition to include with ambulation, as a side-addition when ambulation hits, what do you think?

Edited by: Dirk Magnum on 07/10/2008 03:12:55 I don't believe they've mentioned an interest in adding such a feature. Try to get some people to complain that your name is offensive, because people who get their names reset to "___citizen xxxx" due to their original name being offensive have the opportunity to get a new name of their choosing.
Hmm... Lexx... was the name of one of the dumbest sci fi shows I've ever seen. The ship was shaped like a huge set of male genitalia. Work that angle. Get people to tell CCP that when they see your name they can only think of the highly sexually suggestive show Lexx, and that this offends them.

The only name I'd want to change to is the name of a really old character who's account info I totally forgot so I can't delete it.
It was a trial account that I never subscribed with, really wish they would just purge those out of the system after awhile... say, after a couple of years? But, yeah. These forums seriously need some indicator that the post has ended and the sig has started.

EVE's been around for what... 5 years now? Shouldnt they at least remove trial accounts that havent been active for more than a year at least? -

I just make a new character if I want to change names. I've petitioned my name to get changed, and my response was, "Unfortunately, we do not offer this service currently." or something similar, I forgot the exact wording.
I would love to change my name, but you should really think of that when creating your character. __________________ "People die when they are killed."

I can't remember where, but I remember reading somewhere that they never delete accounts. They just go on forever. Even the banned ones are still there, just cut off. Maybe someday when the 'why are we spending 90 terabites on unused trials?!' subject comes up.... - - - Aloriana Jacques - Skill Sheet

Hmm... Lexx... was the name of one of the dumbest sci fi shows I've ever seen. The ship was shaped like a huge set of male genitalia and all the female characters wore very scanty clothing. Work that angle, since some people have a cultural aversion to that sort of thing. Get people to tell CCP that when they see your name they can only think of the highly sexually suggestive show Lexx, and that this offends them.
I doubt that would work with my name, and even so it's still not adressing the main problem, no name change service!
it would be nice if we could just get a CCP dev or something in here and tell us once and for all if anything like this is in the pipeline or to just forget about it because it's never going to happen etc
edit: oh, and yeah, the Lexx part of my name is from the show, Lexx, the most powerful ship in the two universes! if I could pay to change my name, I would merely be changing it to "Zephyr Lexx", rather than the whole single name it is now, as it gives a better feeling like having a first and second name. I just wish I would have thought about it more on character creation, but I was just too anxious to start playing and didn't want to faff about trying to find a name that wasn't taken for half an hour - it's almost as bad as creating a unique AIM screen name or hotmail address. I don't see the point in them keeping such old trial accounts or even banned accounts. deleting trial accounts that havn't been activated after say, 6 months, a year maybe? then delete those, and certainly delete banned accounts older than 6 months, since if you delete them right away, something might come up and you may need to un-ban the account, I don't know.

Space is cheap. Incredibly cheap.
Edit: Additionally, deleting old accounts would be far more work than just clicking "delete." Using a relational database like SQL, deleting a single record would also require deleting any references to that record in order not to break the database (and return a lot of "record not found" errors), which would also require doing a sort to make sure you're not deleting anything important.
In short, it's easier to just keep old records than it is to delete them and risk orphaning a metric crap-ton of data.

Actually, using foreign key constraints SQL server will tidy up all the orphaned records for you automatically, it really should be as easy as deleting one record at the top. Perhaps they don't use this for performance reasons, I have no idea if that's any issue, but SQL server has supported cascading deletes since 2000.
