Let me direct you to the EvE FAQ available from your left side bar.
http://www.eve-online.com/faq/faq_02.asp
2.4 Does the game contain different races and classes?
The races in EvE are all of human origin, though they have evolved and some have been genetically altered until they have become quite distinct in appearance and characteristics. Players may choose to portray a character from four of the five races in EVE. These are: Amarr, Caldari, Gallente and Minmatar. Each race branches off into two bloodlines. The fifth race, Jovian, is unavailable to players at this time, though players will be given the opportunity to evolve into Jovians in the future.
Someone please tell me if this is old news.

Edited by: Pottsey on 07/10/2008 06:37:13 Thats something like 6+ years old. There are now more then 5 known races in game. Jove where planned at once point for players as you can see all the bloodline, male and female options in the game files. I think there are 8 groups/bloodlines of Jove. ____ Telltale sign of their presence is non-linear teleportation (www.eve-online.com/races/theodicy/Theodicy_All.pdf)

Evolve into Jove? Almost sounds like there were other plans than having them be a seperate race. At least to me it seems strange you can evolve into what we currently know as the Jove

I dont have any links or direct evidence to back it up but i believe the idea of the jove being playable has been shelved mostly as the devs dont want there to be a particular end game race of uber pwnage. In other words theyr not bg on having one race to rule them all in eve.

For me Jove has always just been this enigmatic entity and it's interesting to just specualte about what they actually are, so I think if they suddenly introduced them as some form of playable race it would ruin abit of the RP and narrative side to the game. I'd hate to see Jovian gate campers, or Jovian newbie pilots asking for money in the rookie channel or about Villard Wheels, it wouldnt really seem right to me

Jove characters should work like death knights in World of Warcraft - unlockable if you already have a maxed character. So like, 80 million skillpoint requirement I guess would be cool.

That would be quite awful...
Personally I hope they never make the Jovians playable. The thought of a Jovian character l337 smacktalking in local makes me feel kind of sick to be honest... |

Maybe there would be an option to get access to the Jovians genetic-engineering technology and thereby "evolve into a Jovian". |

Im pretty sure that CCP have realised that there is no point adding in jove and having them as an interesting plot device is a much better way to use them.

No, no, no, no, NO! I started playing EVE because it was so different from every other MMORPG, and now somebody wants to make it like WOW? O. M. G.

That means i'd easily qualify to become jove(94 million skill points and counting...)

As we have a saying here... From your mouth into Gods ears. I hope you're right. Jove are interesting because they are unattainable, it would ruin everything if we had the choice to play them.

I wouldn't mind if Jovian gameplay revolved around staving off the Jovian Disease.
CCP will need some kind of Humanity mechanic for the World of Darkness MMO, so something tells me it's on their minds. _______________________________________________ 'The illiterate of this century are not those who cannot read and write; but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.' |

or maybe in order to "involve" into Jovian, you need to get infected by the Jovian disease first.. which also bring other drawbacks.. lost of sp/per hour maybe? in return you get to fly those uber jovian ship. and once you finished BBQing a 20bs gatecamp, u can get "cured" and return to your previous blood line. just think it as boosters... a time limit like doing clone jumps maybe could prevent this from being overused... sorry for bad english

I personally hope that they never ever allow players to "evolve" into Jovians. There is way to much background on how tough they are and how many fleets they've sent packing from Jovian areas of interest.
What would worry me is that every smack talking l33t wanna be would want to be one and tbh the first time I saw one smacking in local I would be forced to cancel my account, my dreams would become a smoking mess. However saying that I believe that a small number of ... Volunteers should be recruited as Jove and used during events strictly controlled by ccp and great penalties should befall those that abuse that power. The Jove have been silent for too long. Bring them back CCP lets see the Amarr and other races get their tails tanned by Jovian bioships..

ok. as i see it the Jove are on the verge of extinction. and as such. all the tech will be frealy availible to any one who wants to fly there and pick it up. now ccp will have to stop this some how as i dont think that will happen. and unless they plan on making the Jove live forever or cure the desiese. they may have to, in the end, find a way to distribute Jove tech into general circulation of the game.
now this would not be a bad thing. as it would keep with the RP side of things but at the same time, we as mere mortals compared to the GODS that are the Jove will not be able to fully understand there tech. and as such. small amounts of it will maybe get implemented in to our own tech. now this could be done and still keep all races balanced as all races will get access to every thing new. say. all new ships have regenerating (bio) armour. and all modules may get a larger range. as well as lock ranges on ships and such. and if done in the right way can be implermented with out changing any thing at all in the game mechanics. just all the numbers are bigger. from a tactical point of veiw. its pointless. as far as i can see. but an RP point of veiw it will bring and acceptible end and outcome to a problem that CCP will have to face sooner or later.

what would be kinda cool is if the Jovians began invading New Eden, from all levels, high sec, low sec and 0.0 I talking with fleets, just not rats in belts, hitting player POS structures, gate camps ect ect. idk, would seem cool to me. maybe i'm just weird cause i'm Canadian :D

I think the fate of the Jovians has been already sealed by CCP. With one of the future expansions, we will likely receive info that the last Jovians died out.
It also seems that the Jovians were protecting the four races from... something else (Enheduanni?)and when they die probably all hells will break lose in the EVE Cluster.

It's not really all that clear if they even exist. They were referred to by a character in a story. The character was not necessarily a reliable source: could have been wrong, paranoid, wearing a tin foil hat, misinformed, deliberately lying, spreading disinformation, or providing the author with a convenient deus ex machina to make the story's plot work.
I personally think that the Jove provide sufficient opportunities for authors and devs alike to fall back on the old deus ex machina ploy without adding more of them. Certainly the Enheduanni provided a lot of people with a bit of a  moment.

I don't want them to add Jove as a race, but they should give us access to Jove, and get some interaction going... We all know it would be funny if BoB and Goons have to ban together to fight A Jovian invasion.

Theodicy
This is the enheduanni short story, a good read but 'short' is something of a misnomer, while its not hardback book long it is quite long, and there are parts you may want to reread since it gets pretty convoluted at times. Imho it can be considered canon as it is by TonyG, writer of the eve book.
For those of you who dont wish to read the story (and why wouldnt you? its possibly better than the hardcopy book) the enheduanni are a race even more advanced than the jovians, so advanced in fact that they are no longer human. traits include but are not limited to:-
-the ability to travel instantaneously
-The ability to speak directly into a persons mind (it is not revealed whether they use telepathy, or resonate the eardrum directly similar to the 'bone phone' from the aliens books)
-the ability to manufacture sleepers (may be related to the lost 'sleeper' empire whose abondoned tech can be found using archeology/probing) humans who perform a set task, often carrying highly advanced nanotech implants, and an irritating tendency to not die (opening of theodicy, it is also implied that pod tech was given to the empires as pod pilots cannot be replaced in this fashion)
It is also my belief that jamyl sarum is some kind of enheduanni puppet, albeit, an imperfect one as can be seen in the book.
Regarding the actual topic of this thread, it would be interesting to be able to evolve into a jove through the learning mechanic, once you have all learning skills to 5 you can then learn 'jovian bio-engineering' or somesuch, each level of which increases your attributes by 1 or 2 points, also requires you to pick new avatar on your next login, but no jovian-super-pwnage-frigs-that-one-shot-a-BS rubbish.

I do not agree with your idea Gabrielle. When you make Learning Skills at 5 as a requirement and then add a Jovian Biotech Skill as a requirement for even more attribute-points, then a Jovian Transformation will become mandatory. Practically everyone who wants to min/max his attributes will want to turn into a Jovian at once.
Not really a good idea. Of course they could make it, that every player above 50 Million SP gets the option to restart as a Jovian, with slightly higher attributes, but the high-skilled Character will be deleted in the process.

I say they implement it but make Presence V a requirement. Then we'll see how many people truely want to become Jove.
I personally don't see much of a reason to be Jove. Because of the time requirement to develop a character, there is no way they could implement the Jove as everyone seems to think they will. At best you'd maybe get a super-Achura.
I wouldn't be suprised if they even kill off the Jove to allow t3 (or maybe t4 in the future) to be implemented. Maybe the wormholes will link to Jove space.
------ I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it. |

I think Jovians should remain in their current state, as should their space. It's adds to the mystery, and if by some fluke a CCP player interacts with one of us and you get a treat - fantastic!
