The above equation is not even an equation.
A comma between numbers is a seperator for designating placement of thousands, ten thousands, etc.
If that is the case...
then the equation potentially (and this is the kicker - idiot wrote this mathmatical blunder) would be
2,500 x (1,460/250) + 45 x 52024 - 102,200 / 23
Because the 'x' really should be '*' for multiplication, it is assumed multiplication because the 'X' variable is not joined with the number '2x' as an example.
Then you have to use the order of operation below...
Parentheses Exponents Multiplication and Division Addition and Subtraction
Some people have been taught to do it this way...
Brackets Exponents Division and Multiplication, left to right Addition and Subtraction, left to right
Given these astute observations, the answer would be...
2,500 x (1,460/250) + 45 x 52024 - 102,200 / 23
2,500 * 5.84 + 45 x 52024 - 102,200/23
14600 + 2341080 - 4443.4782608695652173913043478261
2355680 - 4443.4782608695652173913043478261

I was just thinking something similar. I'm sure he'd find it offensive tho, so would've phrased it different.
But yah, where I live, we use comma and punctuation "reversed" as to how he's thinking.
Playing EVE is actually a bad habit in that aspect, it list things 'wrong' in some sense, which makes for confusing numbers handed out at times.
Edit; Just to put something more on topic; nice post Chribba, we had some talk in corp about this, thanks for sharing it. As to the guy who won - awsome answer, well deserved. /hat off |

Answer.
The answer will always match whatever number is supplied by the random number generator; refresh the page and it will still match - you can check the number displayed against what's displayed in my quote in this post.
Gimme my billion.
This actually works? It seems to rely on the random function calling the same number each time it is included in a post, unless I'm missing something. Edit: Well I'll be damned. it does. Edit2: Oh hey, just like Chribba said on this very page. Go meeeee

Welcome to Sweden. We use ',' as a delimiter to display precision, not as a 'Hi, I can't read big numbers' delimiter :)
Also, we don't use short scale "billion" (1000 million) but the long-scale one, so Chribba should really give away ONE MILLION MILLIONS in reality, if he were going by our system.

It's not- in many EU countries, the comma represents the same thing as a decimal point (period) in the US.

One thousand million is a billion. A million millions would be a trillion, at least in EVE- but yeah, I see what you mean.

Woot, thanks Chribba! (Initially, you got me too, heh, I thought you were stealth-editing your OP with different numbers every second, to trick us.)
Incidentally, the RND tag is mentioned in this post in Forum Experiments, along with other tags that work. Anyone checking that out, you have to QUOTE the original post to see how the various tags are used.
Nothing is mentioned about being able to do math within phpBB or this board's code, and I don't think this board supports embedding a foreign web page within a post, so I don't know if it's possible to copy/paste the Google Calculator answer within the body of a reply.
The other way to do it would be to use some utility to convert the answer (either from google or from some calculator) into a jpeg and then make that jpeg a signature image.

I did not miss the point of the thread, because at the time I went to solve it, I didn't have to refresh it.
At the time I solved it it was what it was.
If it took you more time to evaluate the post then the first time you saw it, then I can see your point.
I only had to open it once. How many times did you have to open it? Maybe that's the point.
I did not know about the difference in the comma though; thanks for the enlightenment.

Wow....just wow
If only I studied programming at any level, I'd be one billion richer.
And this was done before, a few years ago? Well, thats plenty of time to learn. And by that time, EVE inflation will mean Chribba will have to give about 10 billion away to make it worthwhile.
So, Chribba. Better start using that Veldnaught overtime. Happy birthday if it is indeed yours today! |

This indeed was an awesome post. You Sir have a great solution! ISK is heading your way.
As for the solution, using the randomize feature only generates a single value per post, hence supplying the same random value in the link will give the correct answer.
Good work, honestly the pwn is on me /me bows.
If you feel like being a bastard and want to cheat him out of his 1bil, you can technically always say that while technically correct, you demand the answer to the equation in YOUR post, not his. ;)

How much is: 2,5 x (1,46/250) + 45 x 310632 - 102,2 / 23?
Good luck!
edit/typo.
/c
Well, we need to find the answer, x, let's say to four decimal places. First, you need to start by grouping the equation:
(2.5 * (1.46 / 250)) + (45 x RANDNUM) - (102.2 / 23) = x
Simplify it:
(0.0146) + (45 x RANDNUM) - (4.4435) = x
Becomes:
(45 x RANDNUM) - 4.4289 = x
Let's assign a variable, y, to the random number RANDNUM, to make things easier:
45y - 4.4289 = x
We have a problem now, and that problem is two variables! What we should do now is find what y is. Well, there's only one way to do that, and that is isolating y and solving for it:
45y = x + 4.4289 y = (x + 4.4289) / 45
Plug the answer into the original equation:
(45 * ((x + 4.4289) / 45)) - 4.4289 = x
Wait a second, something is terribly wrong. We have x on both sides, and still no answer. I think we'll need to expand the equation further:
(للللل45للللل *للللل (للللل(لللللxللللل +للللل 4.4289للللل)للللل /للللل 45للللل)للللل)للللل -للللل 4.4289للللل =للللل x
Still a bit confusing...Let's give it another shot:
(للللللللللللل45لللللللللللللل *لللللللللللللل(للللللللللللل(لللللللللللللxللللل لللللللل+لللللللللللللل4.4289للللللللللللل)لللللللللللللل/لللللللللللللل45للللللللللللل)للللللللللللل)لللللللللللللل-لللللللللللللل4.4289لللللللللللللل=للللللللللللللx
See? Now it all makes sense! Wasn't that easy? There you go, now you have the solution to your complex problem.

the rnd is generated on a post by post basis. So you can't replicate the exact number in the OP. I checked. Even those that were quoted, generated a different number, so I'm assuming you can't match the same number without grabbing the whole html site and parsing it.
