Just noticed that certificates are in now.
After playing around with it, i still can't really decide if i like this feature. I know it's supposed to be just a guidance for new players, basically. But as someone who can fly hacs, commandships and probe stuff pretty well, it was shocking that i only had very few certificates.
Anyways, i'm still playing around with it some more.. ----------------------------------------------

I would imagine we are only looking at the first implementation, and many will be added, or adjusted. Especially, since this is the first time they have been on the test server.

After looking at this a while, I like the feature very much.
Only thing is that you have to claim all the Certs you want, in the order you would train them, and you can set them to be either private for public.
It branches just like the skill tree, and you have to start at the very basics and work your way up in claiming Certs.

The advanced projectile gunnery certificates requiring "controlled bursts" is a bit weird.

all the gunnery certs require it, and i also loled at minmatar frigate cert (whatever it was called) required active shield tanking, with no armor skills.

minmitar frigate skills should require speed tanking skills.

That would be... tedious for older players, but not so bad for newer players... Learn skills, get certificate, update clone, repeat. === Q u o t e: If the servers aren't up, its not a hotfix. |

Edited by: Strill on 13/10/2008 05:20:43 I don't really like it. It has all the bureaucracy of real-life certifications, forcing you to spend a bunch of time on useless junk just to prove you know a few other important things. For example, the drone specialist certificate requires you to get Amarr Drone specialization. Who in the world uses amarr drones!? (other than sentries, but they don't get a bonus from amarr drone spec anyway)
Then there's the passive shield tanking certificate. It requires Tactical Shield Manipulation even though passive shield tanking gets absolutely no benefit from that skill.
They also seem to have dumped "logistics" into one pile instead of making a separate certificate for each remote ____ skill. So that means if you wanna show that you have Remote Armor Repairer level 5 you gotta get Remote Shield Transfer 5 and Energy Emissions 5 as well.

I don't know what the point is but it does give a good overview of what someone has trained, provided they have them set to public. Just another way to look at someone's skills, I guess. But, yeah. These forums seriously need some indicator that the post has ended and the sig has started.

As already mentioned, some of the preqs for some of the Certs are a little odd. I hope they adjust this.
Also, they should either increase the number of Certs available, or allow that you only need a certain branch at the required level to get the Cert, but if you have other branches, they show up as well.
Take for instance, Logistics Chief - Elite. Currently requires... Sheild Emissions V Energy Emissions V Remote Armor Rep V
It requires all 3 at level V to get the Elite Level. This really doesn't do much good if you have a applicant who is Shield and Energy Specialized, and not Armor Specialized. Not very useful.
It should be that you need only one of those at V to get the Cert, but the Cert will show how many you do have at that Level.
I think that would be more useful for checking the skills of applicants, which is what I think this is mainly for.

For invulns, who told you they are only for active tank? Mine ones give me +12 all resists even when not active _____________ I don't care what is nerfed, as long as it's not my "undock" button. |

I'll let you know what I think, if my certificates ever stop loading. "Granting Certificates" with the progress bar has been going for about quarter of an hour now (on 19 million SP acct)

Actually, they won't see them unless you switch them to public.
It is meant to give newer players a sense of direction, in that it has recommended certificate sets for professions and ships.
The fact that there is a "Issued by: Concord" note in these certs makes me optimistic that corps will be able to define their own certificates one day, which will come in quite handy for rookie training programs.

I have to admit, I have absolutely no idea what the certificates are supposed to be/help. It seems to me like someone lost a bet to the database maintenance team and had to give some nifty feature in-game to show of their baby's capabilities.
Are they meant to be an alternative to the API key currently being used as a verification tool when corps hire new members?

Yes, and a guide to new players on what skills go together, and what skills go with what ships.

hey hey
Has anyone considered that certificates could be a way of adding a skill queue to TQ ? you could have the option of adding certificate to a queue and then the skills being trained concurrently but being specific to the certification

It was my first thought when i discovered that you could right click on a skill and train it directly from the certificates tab. ----------------------------------------------

It seems to me that making your standard certs publis is only a way for scouts to see which pilot to engage first:
> Don't egnage Dave, he has really good armour tanking skills, engage Polly, she doesn't ahve anywhere near as good skills there

For this to really take off, 2 additions need to be made:
- "Corp Only/Alliance Only" settings in addition to Private/Public - Corporations need to be able to issue their own certificates
For example, we assign our newer players a mentor that helps them with skill planning etc and do not allow them to take ships into pvp for which their mentor did not give them clearance, usually because their skillset is still to weak to be anything than a meat shield in them.
But not every mentor can participate in every op, so a corp issued certificate with a corp-only view setting could really really help here.

Make a bug report, then they will adjust it. In 30 min, I already reported 5 bugs with the certificates. The 6th is on the way.

And they'd end up shooting at the hardest armor-tanker in the group, since Polly the Shield Tanker actually has max'ed armor tanking skills.
Trusting the certs is as good a tactic as trusting the BIO.

I agreee 100%
I trained it to L1 and it unlocked 5 extra certificates that i was eligible for :/ theres no way i would ever train it on TQ cause projectiles dont use cap. I would have 10mil in gunnery but no certificates for it.
also not having controlled bursts effects my starter professions as i cant even get frigate projectiles standard ! ! ! ! ! !
I can also use a TII target painter with signature focussing IV but i cant even get a standard target painter operator certificate :/
I think they could certainly do with some improvements :/
Level 1 - Basic Level 2 - Standard Level 3 - Improved Level 4 - ADVANCED Level 5 - Elite

you can select which certificates you want made public and you could apear to have no armor tanking skills or adjust to only have the basic ones showing
