You're right, here are the benefits: - one long training skill trained afk; - no ISK; - no standings; - no Loyalty points; - no experience; - no friends/socialization; - something to come back to after RL call;
Ohhh... I see now... THAT benefits

yes, let's see, which is worth more: someone with two accounts subscribed 75% of the time (150% of one subscription) or someone with one account subscribed 100% of the time?
GHOST TRAINING IS FREE SKILLS HOLY SHIT BALANCE BALANCE BALANCE
seriously do you not understand that people actually subscribe to additional accounts and spend equal or more money because it exists?

I'd say horrible timing there.
I used to train long ones while playing other online games and then come back for a month to train short skills... Now, I'm not so sure if I bother coming back each other month.
Fallout 3 coming out, I needed that month off.
Then the WoW expansion Wrath of the Lich King is coming out in a month or so...

Ignoring any of the fifty other reasons why this is a horrible idea from a business standpoint, the justification doesn't even make any sense. EVE is based on a grind, same as any other MMO, but you grind for money, not for skills. Skills in EVE are just a horrible timesink (that can be, in turn, bypassed by having enough money to simply buy a character with everything you'd like to fly), but money is actively earned through missions, market orders, ratting, mining, moon mining, production, etc. That's what makes EVE different - leveling and xp are just there as a way to force specialization, whereas money is what makes the world go round. Nobody puts effort into making their characters progress in skills when "leveling up" is just clicking a button and logging out for a week. Everyone who is "actively [putting] their time and energy into working" is doing so for money, which can't be done effectively with a lapsed account. There are exceptions, sure, like RP, but nothing on a game-breaking scale.
tl;dr: Everyone puts in the same work for skills in the first place by pressing a button and then logging out, the guys who are actually putting in work with an active account is making money while the lapsed guy isn't, which is pretty much the entire point of the game, good job CCP

This. While I have to say that I really don't care too much about ghost training since I've never used it, this does seem like a ******ed idea. As people have pointed out, there's no difference between people who log in only to skill change on a paying account and someone leaving the game for a month and getting a 'free' skill. For those citing that this is all part of business and that it's acceptable, consider this: with existing ghost training, people always have a reason to come back to the game, and in the month that they are ghost training, they aren't using any server resources whatsoever. Seems fair to me to leave things as they are.

Also I figured I'd let my alt lapse and get Gallente Cruiser V so he could fly an Ishtar, but I guess I'll just sell him now. Anybody in the market for a 13.5m SP drone specialist?

Edited by: Kayl Breinhar on 13/10/2008 19:54:35 CSM idea. Let them remove this, but demand a Rank 8 "Advanced Learning" skill that if trained to V gives you a 50% boost on your current attributes. Most people won't train a Rank 8 to V, but even 40% would be great.
That'll make the "transition" a LOT less painful. 50% on my stats would make training a skill like Caldari BS V go from 34 1/3d to 21 1/2d. If you make skills fit more neatly into the 30d timeframe, people won't have as much of a problem with this.
Case in point, with 35.2Perc and 37.4WP, Gallente Dread V on my stats is only 32d.

WTF. Ok If you are going to do this you damn well better bring back th 30day GTC. People DO have lives you know, they enjoy being able to take a break now and again, set a decent skill, and let it go inactive when times are tough and we can't afford your $34 every two month game. Instead you're forcing people to play and set up subs and keep them paid like a bill. I dunno, some of you may agree, some of you may say "Well if you can't afford it, don't play".
CCP stop nerfing RL money, lol, you phail utterly at making people want to play this game.

This s.h.t will hit a fan whatever we say here. Problem is..this game will lose one of its nicest features and one of the strongest qualities over other MMO's. Guys..you have enough problems with game as it is now...this rubbish will achieve nothing..well..maybe more people will quit.

I won't object that ghost training isn't a cheaper way of training, but it isn't free training. It is however the ONLY reason why so many people I've run into have returned to the game. They come back and see that x level 5 has trained, feel more useful and stick around for a few months. This seems rather odd and like always the proof of such a _strong_ need for a change is stated from a lie.

I'm not sure what you're yammering about, but that's okay, I'll try to clarify.
I'm a casual gamer, and while I've had this account for almost two years, I'm not heavilly invested in ISK (I think the last time I had over 100mil was 6 months ago). Two things kept me here were Goonfleet's awesome newbee ops, and flying shiny new ships that did cool things, and needed time to train. The in-between was boring, because I wasn't a newbee and didn't have enough skillpoints to fly something cooler. So being able to say "train this, and I'll come back when the boring part's over while I go do something productive" was excellent. I wasn't paying to do boring crap.
Like I said, "ghost training" was a selling point. It seperated Eve from every other MMORPG. If you think that's silly, that's fine. I won't be around much longer to bug you anyway.

You're paying for a service. If you stop paying for said service, you stop receiving said service.

So people who sign up for Cable, Cellphone service or other services where they pay for 11months and get the 12th free should suddenly get there service cancelled because they're not paying for that month? Cause thats what CCP is now doing

The big question is why should I pay $60 to learn Cap ships 5 when hundreds of other players have got it for free... ...the unfairness of that puts me and will put lots of others of people off the game
You don't pay the $60 to train the skill, you pay the $60 to play the game. The people who didn't pay, didn't play the game for that period of time. They came back and PAID after to play the game.
The way the game works is that if you're at all inactive for any period of time, you get PENALISED, compared to the rest of the server. Given the crazy SP limit, there's no upper cap on SP and no real way to catch up once you fall behind. By allowing people to continue skilling over short (a month is short, given some people have been subbed to this game for 5 years and have paid for the vast majority of it) time, the game is playable by people whose real lives aren't as forgiving as others.
The fact that people would deactivate their account ANYWAY when they go on hiatus doesn't seem to matter to CCP, so they **** over the people who have been paying for their game because of their greed; doesn't really make people want to come back after being ****ed in the ass about it.
