I'm almost positive people must have thought of this before. So why can't we have salvage drones ? We have mining and combat, everything we need for missions/exploration ... except for the SALVAGE component !!
Go Salvage drones !!!

There are people, myself included, who claim to have seen them.
There are others - who will not believe us.
There are still others who have given any number of explanations as to whether or not they ever existed. Dropped items ... Dev's playing about ... Something that once existed but was discontinued ...
If you do a search on Salvager Drones you will see that people have been asking for them forever.

While that would help to maximize profits, there's still something very visceral and satisfying in snagging that salvage wish your own hands. I think it'd be used more by carebears than ninja salvagers.

Once, back some time ago, you could get a Drone Salvage skillbook from a 10 part mission. When people started to write about it on the forums, CCP finally removed that skillbook from the mission and from people who already had the skillbook and the skill itself, from those who had it trained up. Turned out it was a mistake from CCP. Shouldn't have been ingame.
CCP got flamed, people got their Drone Salvage Operation skillbooks back and those that had it trained got it back on their trained skillist in charactersheet. It's pretty useless. --- It have always fallen to a few to sacrifice for the good of many

Was a idea that CCP decided against.
If you use EvEMon, there's a non-public skill for Salvage Drone Operation - no way to get it anymore though, and AFAIK the actual drones were never in-game.

It was answered at fanfest (second question).
CCP tried to make salvage drones and had prototypes. But as salvage mechanics (as used for salvage drones) are far different from mining mechanics (used for mining drones) it was not feasible to implement. |

you also get the impression from the way the devs answere the question that they dont see a role for salvage drones, i.e that they wouldnt add anything to the game..

From a missioning perspective, if salvage drones would "auto-aggress" wrecks in the manner that combat drones "auto aggress" targets after the initial target is declared, they would be incredibly useful. If they required targeting each and every wreck to deploy them, they'd be considerably less so.
One of the most annoying things about missioning, imo, is targeting the several dozen wrecks during combat, or after the fact for salvaging. If you could just let a cloud of drones take care of that for you as you finished off the last few mobs in a pocket, that would be ridiculously convenient. |

I bolded the best part of your comment, and the reason why they are not (and likely won't) existing in the game. It's simply too easy to fill a drone bay with Salvage Drones, and send them on their way, and this goes for both sides of those who want the wrecks in the Mission.
Imagine you're running a Mission in your BS, and a Ninja Salvager invades your Mission with a Droneboat full of Salvage Drones. He can likely salvage all of your wrecks while you're still finishing off the last of your Mission.
I'm a Ninja Salvager by trade, and even I can see that it would be unfair to both sides - and believe me, I already get enough tears from those running Missions now. People would flood local and the forums with complaints if every time they ran a Mission, they lost out on all of the salvage because the drones were too quick.

It balances out in my mind... and I primarily run missions.
A mission-runner could trade off a chunk of their DPS they would normally get from drones periodically to send out salvaging drones. The benefit is salvaging near real-time without targeting interference. The draw-back is lower DPS (and consequently, longer mission-running times).
The ninja-salvager could certainly warp in and clear the field more quickly than they currently do, but their trade off would be that many more missioners could now salvage "in-line"... therefore presenting fewer targets on the whole (in theory).
Choosing combat or salvaging drones as a missioner then becomes a strategic decision. |
