Hay, Im` at solo mining in my retrieve`s, un 1.0 / 0,9 space, but i`m planning to move to lower sec space to get some more ores besides veld and scord. But here the problem comes: the rats come from now to now, and i cant shoot them as all my HI slots are with mining lasers. SO, should i shield tank them, or what ? any ideas on this would be nice, toghther with some setups (how ou deal with the rats). TY.

Tank with small shield booster (even a civvie booster, or at worst two should do fine against most highsec rats) OR kill them with (up to) 5 light drones before they become a threat.

It is totally irresponsible for you to take a retriever/hulk out in low sec by yourself. Low sec mining is a serious business, and you might need to get you a ship that can tank some damage from rats and gangs that want to ruin your day.
I try and tank as much as possible for the rat's typical damage in that area of space, i.e. themal/em....I also don't go out alone. We usually have at least one maybe two flankers to intercept rats before they get a lock on your ship or do some major damage and to keep an eye on local to see if any hostile's show up in-system. ALWAYS scout out the system for at least a week or two and get to know the travel patterns and the typical toons that inhabit the system.
Get T2 hammerheads and make sure you can use 4 or 5 and be ready to warp at moments notice.....

There are two possibilities... but after you have some skill. First...by way of example... I have a second account with a small hauler on it ... 6.6 K cargo or so... I have a covetor on my main. Using 5 drones I was pulling Kernite out of 0.6 most of the day and the drones held the NPC pirates off just fine. Im not sure about .5 space but its worth a try, prob be ok with 5 drones but they will take a little shield off is all. Im pretty sure .4 space would be too much for the drones. As for ninja's... roll the covetor out to the belt and light up the roids. Alt / Tab to the second account and run out there on the hauler and bookmark the covetor. Jettison your ore in a can and Alt/Tab to the hauler and stick the ore in the can into the hauler as fast as possible (leave a bullet or some lo value item in the can to keep it from exploding.. then warp to dock at the station. The window of opportunity for a ninja is basically zero cause you arn't gonna transfer to the can if there is someone around and the amount of time the ore is in the can is so short ... well u won't lose it to a ninja. ... so... Once docked after warp on the hauler ore into items' and undock... warp to 0 meters from your book mark... repeat the cycle. My experience was it was all the badger II could do to keep up with the covetor... and alt / tab'ing will wear you out so you don't need to worry about sleeping and AFK is impossible. If a player does show up its just better to scoop the drones to the bay and warp either to a new belt or to dock depending on perceived threat.
Second... Ninja mining. Warp to the belt of interest and QUICKLY light up the roids with your miners. AT THE FIRST perception of a rat or player warp to dock. If a bird drops out of warp near you and imediately warps away then you have been bookmarked for battleships to warp to you... you need to warp imediately when you see that first bird bookmark you or you are simply dead. If you are seen by anyone cloak and move or warp to dock imediately because you can be sure their corp is now sending battleships and fast cruiser after you. You need to understand that your chance of making it through the gate is iffy because they will be camped by battleships, cruisers, battle cruisers... lo sec is not a care bear kind of place. But, if you are willing to lose ships you can try to get in there and once in awhile you will get away with it. Hope that helps. Good luck

Edited by: Suneai on 15/10/2008 22:34:19 If you hop into 0.7/0.6 you should be able to mine Kernite and Omber quite effectively. You shouldn't need too much protection against rats in those security levels, 3/4 light drones should be more than enough. If you want a little more security then place an armour repairer in one of the low slots... I wouldn't worry about shields since they recharge over time.
For 0.4 space, 5 drones is handy to have though in some areas 4 will do. Probably good to have a shield and armour repairer though you won't always need to use one.

If you're alone in a barge and there is a lot of rats in it, it's not as bad as you alone and a lot of skunks.

When exploring hi-sec with my Imicus frigate I often sit in an asteroid belt and mine with 2 drones, just to pass the scanning time. The third drone (random tech 1 light scout drone) I use to kill any belt rats that spawn. So far I've happily mined in 0.5 space and never had to warp out (which would break my scan) due to rats.
Really, with either a shield or armor repairer and one light drone (with decent drone skills) you should be fine. If your drone skills suck then perhaps use 4 or 5 light scout drones until you get the hang of things, then adjust combat drones down and mining drones up.
Unfortunately the retriever only has, as I recall, enough room for 5 light drones so every drone that you use for defense is a drone that you can't use for mining. So the chances are that you wont actually be making more money by heading down to 0.5 sec space. Although it might be less tedious.
On a ship with more drone bay storage you can hold a full flight of mining drones and a flight of defensive drones and when rats appear you can pull in as many mining drones as needed and deploy defensive drones to kill the rats, then pull those and put the miners back to work. Just watch the health of your drones because rats will happily target your mining drones and they can go down pretty quickly - before you can retrieve them if they aren't really close by.

A mining barge or exhumer will happily sit in 0.5 with 4 drones out and be perfectly fine, if you want a shield you only need the civ one at most just to ease your mind as the drones take everything out anyway. Leaving you to watch the lightshow and move your ore about.

Had a friend of mine with a similar situation. He did not have a lot of skills so we went with the following set up for his retriever and he has been fine in .5 and up.
Mid : Civilian Shield Booster Lows: Damage Control I, Co-Processor I
May not be the "best" setup, but it will get you started. Upgrade the items as you get more CPU from skills/better equipment.
Drone skills are a must -- you will use them to kill the rats. Use the ones best for the rat types in your region. Use light scout drones and with minimal skills they will chew through frigate sized rats quickly.
.4 and below -- use a cruiser. |

My experience with the Retriever: having not very good drone skills, 4 light drones (Warrior I) in Offensive mode are enough to kill all the rats in .5 space (better if you are on the keyword to set them to engage targets). No tanking needed at all (cargo extenders in lows and afterburner in mid).
It can be improved with Drone Interfacing (20% to drone damage PER LEVEL), and some other ways.
So, no need for anything than light drones to defend yourself.

The real question here is: why mining something different than veldspar? According to calculations made some months ago veldaspar was the most profitable ore besides few lowsec ores or 0.0 ores. I haven't checked recently, since I am not interested in mining. Have things changed since then?

Let's be really clear on one thing. If you take a mining ship into any sector lower than 0.5 security status you will loose it in minutes.
It does not matter how well you are tanked or how many combat drones you deploy you will be probed out & killed. Only mine in lowsec with a sizeable escort & supportive logistics.
If you choose to ignore this advice remember it is your game but remember that when you are in lowsec you are fair game & a noob status holds no water.

But the original poster hasn't said "I'm planning to move to low sec". He has said "to LOWER sec", from the 1.0/0.9 he is now.
Apart from this, the advice is totally correct (at least if you don't find an abandoned low sec system)
