I have X3:Reunion and it looks like great fun...if only I could ever figure out how to play the damn thing.
Seriously it's ridiculous because after videos I've watched and reading tons of reviews it sounds like so much fun. _____________ Hai. |

Yeah, it's not the most intuitive game. I've had the game for over a year, and I only figured out how to place stations a few weeks ago.

Does it have a storyline of any sort? Is Julian Brennan back? And the hot, asian chick whose pixels make it all worthwhile? What about the psycho mobster's daughter I vaguely recall having to rescue?
I have X2 and X3, I think I'll order this later on. I had the misfortune of playing X3 before they patched the major bugs and it left a sour taste in my mouth. I reinstalled it quite recently and tried to have another go...couldn't work out why my SETA wasn't working properly right at the start and gave up. -------------

Did your ship actually have a SETA device installed?
Anyway. YAY, I've finally gotten round to buying X3TC. First impressions: intro sequence is quite frankly AWESOME. I keep watching it over and over again (I know it's sad). The mouse + keyboard controls aren't the same as with X3R (unless I changed my controls in X3R and forgot about it), so it feels quite awkward to play. I miss being able to right click, getting a mouse cursor and being able to just click stuff. Now you have to shift-N. Not a great hardship (and I can probably reassign that function anyway), but annoying. Some other fairly minor UI tweaks which will take a while getting used to, such as (apparently) not being able to auto-dock.
From the limited amount I have played, it just seems like X3R but with some more ships, stations, equipment, etc and some new sectors added. Which I'm happy with - no need to fix what ain't broke! I haven't noticed any graphical upgrade over X3R (although I'm sure it's there), but then X3R was fairly shiny and pretty to begin with. |

Oh man I loved buzzing around in my pimped out jaguar. It had those oversized guns and ridiculous speed, making it superb for capping and general dogfights, like crusaders in eve!
Have the mechanics in dogfights changed? Does it still have that stupid eve-like auto-stop function (when you glide through space and stop the throttle, the ship automagically stops)? I'd love to see that 'feature' gone, it'd make the game much more interesting.
What about complex-building, in the original x3 it was so clumsy and random that you'd have to save after every successfull factory planting. In anycase, I might have to go and buy this game. _______

Edited by: ReaperOfSly on 23/10/2008 22:00:04 I don't remember a ship called the jaguar. My favourite ship was the Xenon LX. I think it must have been a bug (why would an AI eject from it's ship?), but I actually managed to capture one of these. Reverse engineered it, then built a small army of the things. They seem to be listed as M3, but their stats are slightly better than an M3+.
I'm afraid it's still a case of "Physics? What physics?". You stop your engines -> your ship stops dead. And I haven't build any complexes yet, but I was actually rather fond of my spaghetti complexes in X3R. Occasionally found a crate of free stuff near some of the tubes, where some silly trader had bumped against it.
Edit: ooh, one cool thing. You don't have to drop your shields to pick up crates any more. Just run over them, and they get collected. Saves some faffing about at least. |

Hmm yeah, it wasn't jaguar, it was something else... I think I just named it jaguar when I bought it and as I never lost one so all I can remember of it was its name hehehe.
Dogfights were bloody awesome, they don't make enough dogfight games. |

The ship Julian starts in has SETA, I'm fairly sure. Regardless, my problem was that I would adtivate it, then after a time it would just disengage by itself. Before I did anything on starting anew, I wanted to try getting used to the controls etc, so tried manouvering about and SETA just wouldn't stay on. I went some distance from the bustle of that starting system (mostly to get away from Bandana That name always makes me laugh), and even stationary, it still happened. I posted on egosoft forums, tried everything with my logitech controller, remapped keys, and gave up. I really did try!
PS. Despite my final post in that thread, it didn't actually solve my problem. I thought it had, but trying a second time it came right back. Nevermind, I just ordered X3TC from play, will give it a go when it arrives.

It's probably your mouse. I know I sometimes have this thing where my mouse cursor slowly moves without me touching the mouse. And sometimes it randomly moves to an adjacent pixel. If this happens to you, it WILL break the SETA. |

Well, there's at least some inertia, you drift a little when you turn.
TC is my first X3 game, and I barely scratched the surface, but I think I like it.
Couple of noob questions:
- Where to find that jump drive I hear about? how much does it cost?
- So far in the stations I visited, the price of trade goods are the same, preventing trade. is trade only doable over long distances? Is it wize to try doing it without a jump drive?
- Any tip to make money in the beginning, in a custom game? Tried a kill mission, but even without wasting any time going about it, the timer ended 2 minutes before I could reach the target. Damn noobship slower than a cruiser. ------------------------------------------

Get the jumpdrive from the Terracorp Headquarters in Home Of Light (1 jump south of Argon Prime, 2 jumps south of Herron's Nebula where you start as humble merchant). It costs about 100k and uses energy cells for each jump.
To start trading, it's best to trade stuff like energy cells and ore. Buy energy cells from solar power plants at 12 or 13 credits each, sell them for 18 or 19. Buy ore from ore mines for around 50 to 70 credits each, sell for 130 to 180 (or more if you're lucky). One thing you will find immensely irritating is seeing another trader ship docking at the station before you, buying out a load of what you want to buy, and sending the price up. Not much you can really do about that but go somewhere else. It's good to invest in trade command software mk1 and mk2 early on, so you can see what the buy and sell price of goods at a given station are before you dock there. Best Buy locator and Best Sell locator cost about 20k each and are also worth getting as a trader once you've built up a little cash.
For a quick cash injection early on, there's an abandoned ship in the top right corner of Menelaus' Frontier (go exploring to find this sector - it's a little way to the north and east of Argon Prime). You will of course need a duplex or triplex scanner to find it. Go claim it and sell it at a shipyard.
Another way to make some easy cash is to scavenge stuff from battles. Last night, I bumped into some Paranid invasion fleet barging its way through Home Of Light. The resulting battle caused lots of ships to go pop, and drop a lot of missiles in crates which I could pick up in my buster sentinel. Made about 400k by doing that.
From what I can gather, missions in TC are broken. Some of them are impossible to complete in the given time limit. Don't bother. Just trade your way up to getting a decent fighter, then go shoot some pirates. Sometimes the pirate pilot will bail from his ship before you finish destroying it. Then you can capture it and either keep it or sell it. At least, that's what happened in X3R, haven't tried in TC yet. Build up some cash, then build a few stations here and there to give you an income, and basically go and dominate the universe.

i finally got the game as well, yesterday, and naturally spent all day playing :D Im working through the terran plot, its rather cool... the m4 that you start with is rather fast, and powerful... ive taken down m6's with it >.< Cant seem to find a jumpdrive in my current game though, but ive been busy playing the plot (dont really need a JD... cargo is too small to use effectively :| ) Main problem ive found is that nobody at all stocks terran weapons! Even the weapon forges themselves dont have them... Ive finally found a couple extra missiles, and one extra EMPC thing... That should make me that much more effective :D
There is also a minor bug in the terran m4 model in relation to weapon placement; the first two weapon slots are on the right, but they make both gun models show on the ship, whereas if i put a gun on the left side (bottom two slots), it shoots from an invisible gun on the left...
Oh yea, and the egosoft forums need an upgrade badly. |

Has anyone else been getting ridiculously low framerates? My game started off fairly smoothly, but my framerate has been getting lower and lower as I discover more sectors. I don't think it's a graphics issue because lowering the graphics settings doesn't give me a higher framerate, and my computer is fairly pimped out anyway. As far as I can tell, the only graphical change they've made is to add reflections (which can't be turned off). It's irritating.

apparently this is a cpu problem: the more systems you explore, the more your computer has to keep track of stuff and such... My computer has crappy framerates anyway, but i live with it :p
My guess is that in a month or two, egosoft will come out with a huge performance patch (they seem to always do).
Im now stuck in the terran missions, due to a rather annoying loop that requires the ts you capture to stay alive, and if it doesnt, requires you to start over >.<

Dude, just don't bother with missions. They're basically broken at the moment. Just build up an empire using more traditional means like trading, capping and manufacturing.
So do you reckon getting a new CPU would help much with the framerates? I've been thinking for a while about upgrading my E2160 to an E7300. More L2 cache, higher multiplier, 45nm chip, all good things and doesn't cost a king's ransom. |

Meh the missions work well enough to give me free ships, and thats all i worry about at the moment :D (just got handed a fully loading terran m3... not complaining )
Plan on working my way up with the missions to a ship that can use marines... try out capturing other ships for profits.

I just remember laughing when X3R came out and everyone complained that the anti-piracy was preventing them from playing their legit game. When the Bala-gi missions came out in v2.0, they decided to remove the protection that was causing so many problems.

X3 is the entire reason I even started playing Eve. I was always like "I wonder what this game would be like in multiplayer?" Now I know... blooooooody! I have not bought it yet, because X2 I bought a new comp to run it, and X3 I bought a new comp to run it. I don't want to buy a new comp just yet . I just cannot get over how insane the graphics are in that game though. Even X2, despite the terrible ****pit, still has some decent graphics options that can test a good computer.
Can you cap Khaak cap ships in the expansion? That would be quite lovely. Also what's up with invasion forces? Do the Paranid invade Argon space, Split invade Boron space, and the like?

From what I understand, the capture technology that they introduced with the marines and such allows you to capture BigShips (above m6, below m2, but not including m8... last minute dev change apparently) This SHOULD include all ships, including khaak, xenon, friendly bigships... |

Ok so apparently either I fail at boarding, or i just have no clue how; I got a tp, and I found myself a pirate centaur that i banged up quite a bit. I ordered the tp with 9 marines to board it, and kept my weapons on the centaur to keep the shields down...
But somehow it managed to kill all of the marines, i get no status messages related to the boarding, and it also kills my tp! Now im mad... So i reloaded and blew it to hell before it had a change
Since ive now given up on m6 targets, and m7 are also out of the question, where can i find a good target? :\

I think someone in the Egosoft forums mentioned that M7M ships (or something) were specially equipped with boarding pods for marines. I think the fact that weapons stay intact after severe hull damage is a bug. Once that is fixed, it may be possible to capture a ship with marines using other types of ship. |

X3 TC has some good ideas, but it has also the old Egosoft problem of being full of bugs.
For example some Storyline Missions cannot be completed without cheating. Also the game has a bad performance problem and is slowing down over time, which right now can only be solved with starting over.
In my honest opinion you should still give X3: TC a chance but it would be the best to wait a few weeks and the game has been patched to an acceptable level.

Yes, I'm giving up on X3TC for a while until Egosoft release a performance patch. I have explored the western part of Argon space and a few sectors leading over to Akeela's Beacon and Light of Heart. And my framerate is around 15 on average as opposed to 60-80 at the start.
Thing is, I understand why performance is degrading as I explore more sectors, it's just that I'm reminded that X3R doesn't have this problem.
