Oh God!
I can see in my eyes! The poor - but entusiastic - newb...
Thinking that this will ACTUALLY help... does this...
OMG!
It's like the legend with the old woman trying to dry off her cat in the microwave oven... poor bastard got coocked at 1000w for 5 minutes or so! aarrgghhhh
Please note, if you intend to "dry your cat off" in the microwave, may i suggest that you instead "dry it off" in a normal oven at exactly 195 Degrees c until nicely crispy. I find that when you "dry your cat off" in the microwave the meat tends to toughen and be "less succulent"
I hope this was of help to you!

8800GTX @ 1920x1200 @ HDR+bloom low, shadows standard, 4xAA, 8xAF : 120FPS in space with a few ships. Low 30-20's with hundreds of ships during fleet action (all effects on).
Fascinating. I don't force AA+HDR but I have the same card and resolution. During FW fleet engagements (and some of those were pretty blobby) I think I occasionally saw my FPS drop below 60. I run with interval=1 so can't comment on how high it normally runs but if you're seeing low 30s then it suggests that AA+HDR is indeed a nasty performance hit.
You pay for the visual quality, as you did by enabling AA for the original EVE client. There is nothing different, in that sense.
My objection was to the statement implying that HDR and AA somehow refused to work together. The framerates I get are very playable, considering that in those situations (with hundreds of ships on grid) the lag is several seconds at best anyway. ...

I have both AA (16x) and Full HDR running for EVE on my Nvidia 8800GT, I use the utility nHancer (search google) to do this the profile within the Nvidia control panel will let you set AA and tell you you have, but it doesn't actually work in the game, you need to use nHancer to tell the driver to use a compatibility override.
PM me in game if you wish me to send you some screenshots of my nHancer settings ;) D.

Is there an "or" for that "either"?
