I'm debating on going and getting large rails and use a Rokh and am wondering if it's worth planning for T2 large rails cos it seems to add many many many many more days to the training having to get the others skilled up that I will more than likely never actually use, unless I'm reading it wrong?
So effectivly what I am asking is it worth the hassle to get them up to just be able to use T2 ammo and T2 large rails as opposed to skilling up other skills like BS5 or something like that instead.
Thanks in advance

get BS 5 before t2 guns mate. one of the first level 5 skills you should get.
I can't say much though lol, I've got the specilization skill at 5 however I'm pretty specilized. Depends on if you want to be specilized or not. Also if you like fleet combat alot I'd suggust you get it later on when you have all your backup skills trained up (cap skills, navigation etc.) ________________________ I'M POOR

Depends on whether or not your ship requires T2 ammo to do what you're trying to do. In the case of the Rokh - spike isn't needed. Other ships require tech 2 ammo to snipe. |

OK so it';s a long term thing but no were near needed for a sniper Rokh set up. Good to know.
On to support skills then and BS5

If you're in a rokh it's not needed for sniping. But still. T2 beams are cheaper than the meta 4 beams, they deal more damage (the specialization skills adds more DPS) and you can use T2 long range ammo, which tends to out-DPS lesser types of ammo.
So if you're flying a Rokh it's not "urgent" but should definitely be on the "to do eventually" list. ______________________________________________ -My respect can not be won, only lost. It's given freely and only grudgingly withdrawn. |

Large rail spec is worth it, especially after this upcoming speed nerf. Training blasters just will not be worth it unless you can guarantee your targets will be on top of you. 99% of the time though, you will be out of range.
I fly both Rokh and Megathron.
Rokh rails without T2 is worthless because the ship only gets a bonus to range and not damage.
Megathron gets very nice DPS with T2 rails at any distance, and you can easily change ammo to get that 150+km range and greater.

if you don't have the racial BB to 5 or the large gun at 5. . .you may want to look at which race very very closely.
Ravens work just fine for ratting at 4. |

I'll echo some of the comments. The skill is worth it to level 4 but level 5 I've never bothered with as the time needed vs the extra dps gain is prohibitive versus the gain to be had from training other skills in that time. That said I don't exclusively fly a battleship and would probably go for level 5 if I did as I'm in the 70m+ sp bracket. Just to correct something though the damage bonus follows the guns not the ammo so I use faction ammo in my fleet bs not t2.

Edited by: Ralara on 25/10/2008 09:51:41 It's worth training them to 4... not to 5 though. A month for a 2% damage increase on one weapon that unless all you do is fleet fight, is not going to be worth it. Training Surgical Strike and Rapid Fire to 5 takes just a bit longer and will give you far more gains.
I'd get all the support gunnery skills to lvl 5 with the exception perhaps of Trajectory Analysis (5% bonus to falloff... when a Rokh's optimal is past the edge of the grid (or at the least, over 250km which is your maximum possible lock range in eve) anyway is just... pointless) as well as Drone Interfacing 5, the ability to overload (Thermodynamics) to 4 etc before I would even look at LRGS-5. And.. heck, I am already past that point and I'm still not training it :) |

and to claify what op asked. any large gun spec is worth it.. so what if it takes 18-21 days plus to train lvl 4 to lvl 5?
Its just worth it imo

18 days for a rank 8? Your stats > my stats for sure.
Training a rank 8 skill to get a marginal increase of 110/108 ~ +1.8% more damage? No, sorry. I can train Battleship V in exactly the same time. I could get AWU to V and Explosive Armour Comp to V.
Training weapon spec skills to V is something to do when pretty much everything else is already maxed and you just don't want to fly any more ship types.

does it count if you want to train all medium and large gun specs to 5?

Personally I will never even consider training the Specialization skills to V.
Maybe when I am Dr.Caymus the Second and have nothing else to train |

I was refering to the base large turret skill... rank 5... i do know all large turret specs are rank 8. for me thats a 32 day and some change, train from 4 > 5.
The key reason alot of younger players dont train large turret specs up is the long skill training time.
