I am ready to buy a Black Ops or Carrier, but I guess I am a little confuses about how jump drives work, especially for Black Ops. How does a Carrier or Black Ops jump from one system to another? Can a Black Ops or Carrier open a jump portal and jump through it to another system?
Thanks.

Edited by: Spike 68 on 28/10/2008 21:12:47 All jump drives work the same. someone in gang, with a cyno field generator opens a cyno field. you right click them in gang and jump to them. Now the jump drives require enough racial isotopes in order to jump. When you jump you jump to the cyno field your gang opened.
Now jump portals only blackops and titans can open, work the same way only instead of clicking jump you open a portal and gang mates can right-click you and jump to the cyno. Note: for blackops only covert ops, recons, and bombers can jump to the cyno.
But tbh if you have to ask you shouldnt be jumping anything. |

Both worth in the same way, when jumping themselves using the jump drive. Firstly, you might have the wrong idea on how they jump, and also with jump portals.
Jump portals are modules which are fitted to black ops (covert jump portals) and titans (jump portals). They are opened up, 'making' the ship who used it a stargate in effect. They are connected to another character (usually an alt) in another system, who acts as the 'end' stargate. It is a one way ticket. The ship using the jump portal does not go through the jump portal. It merely creates it for others to use.
The jump DRIVE however, is what all capitals (Orca and Freighter not included) use to 'move' from system to system. It is also what the Black Ops have, in addition to using gates. These are used in a similar fashion to jump portals. to use it, you need a character in another system, with Cynosural Field (Same as the jump portals) who will 'open' the cyno. The capital can then right click that characters name (needs to be in gang) and he will then enter local next to the cyno field and ship. It will cost roughly 70% capacitor with decent skills.
In short, you need a cyno in the target system, in order to move there. Black ops and carriers work exactly the same way, when it comes to jump drives. Minus the fact that black ops have a FAR shorter range. Take my advice tho....dont train for black ops. Train for carriers. Should you wish to THEN go for black ops, fine. But theyre currently not worth the skill investment to warrant training for them alone. |

A ship at the destination system uses a Cynosural Field Generator. This is a highslot module which creates a beacon in the system that everyone in the system can see on their overview and anyone can warp to. These fields last between 5 and 10 minutes depending on what ship created the beacon, and the cyno ship is stuck in place for the duration of that cyno field. Any ship with a jump drive can then jump to it (if within range) and appear next to the cyno field. Jump capable ships are carriers, dreadnoughts, motherships, titans, jump freighters, rorquals, and black op battleships.
How blackops differ, is that they can also jump to Covert Cyno Fields in addition to standard cyno fields. Covert cyno fields last between 30 and 60 seconds (depending on ship used), use far less fuel, and do not create a a beacon on the overview that anyone in system can warp to. The only way to tell that a covert cyno has been lit is to be on grid with one when it is lit, and even then, you cannot warp to it. |

Thanks, this helps allot. But tbh, I would think that a Black Ops ship should at lease be able to open cyno field and jump it self through it.
Well you live and learn. Thanks for answering my question.

One of the discussions for boosting black ops, was the ability to jump portal without the need for a cyno, with the 'downside' being a set 'jump-in' point. However, it was ignored it seems.

Perhaps you shouldn't be posting anything.
