Hey all.
As it's near enough a year since we relaunched I thought it an idea to let you know what's been happening with the site.
We've streamlined a great deal and cut back on some unpopular features, such as our own forums and private groups but what we're really excited about is the Commslink facility that has been under test for a few months.
What is this?
If you've heard of Digg, then maybe you already have the concept! It allows you to browse the internet and create a Commslink for any Eve related content you think is important, funny or just want to share with others anyway.
Readers of the site can then comment or rate the link, you can view all Commslinks by day, week, month, year or all time.
Details on how to create a Commslink are here.
You can also create your own blog and you may also be interested to know that this is IGB compatible!
The site itself is www.starfleetcomms.com.
Thanks! |

What's with the glut of people adding line breaks between every sentence lately?

my eyes freaked out
suggestions: less lines on page, make the vote up down bar tiny and in fact maybe just two arrows (like reddit), and make those "share this" sections tiny as well
right now your text is utterly dwarfed by the navigation stuff to the point where i didn't even know what i was looking for when i first loaded it --
Your signature is too large. Please resize it to a maximum of 400 x 120 with the file size not exceeding 24000 bytes. If you would like further details please mail [email protected] - Mitnal |

Excellent feedback. I'll look into doing exactly that pretty soon. Thank you. |

Actually, using the digg-style sytem is a good idea. I wish I had thought of it first! There is so much EVE content out there that it's hard to keep up and find the most interesting content. I know we have the speedlink, which is nice.
Presumably you're running pligg. My only comment so far regarding the site would be that it seems VERY overly-complex. So much is going on on the page. The colors are a bit grating against each other and there's lots of graphics and things. It just looks ... a little jumbled.
Now, I'm more of a coder/developer/QA type. I completely suck when it comes to deisgn. Especially user interface design. So take my comment with a grain of salt. However, I would personally find the site and offering much more appealing if it was simpler - like Digg and Reddit are. Keep the necessary things (vote buttons, etc) very obvious and accessible and remove less necessary stuff. Reduce it to its vital parts as much as you can.

Great advice, thank you. I have a plan in mind, phase one if you like, of maybe removing the right hand column entirely. I think that may simplify the layout quite a bit without losing too much functionality. |

I agree about the voting part and navigation. Set it to a two-column presentation and stick the "navigation" part at the top of the second column or something.
And for the voting - get rid of that entire giant graphic at the top of every entry that really does - as someone mentioned - dwarf the actual article/subject below it. It doesn't need to be there at all. Just stick the arrows to the left of the blurb paragraph. People will know what to do. Or replace the arrows with thumbs. Or keep the arrows, but color them so it's very clear, visually, what they're for (ie, a green one and red one).

Edited by: Max Torps on 31/10/2008 23:21:26 Ok I've actioned some of your feedback everyone, thanks for taking the time to have a look and post. I will get the rest of the stuff, like colours, navigation and layout done over the next couple of days.
Once again, thank you.

Ok I've taken quite a lot of the thoughts you've given onboard and made some alterations. I'd be grateful if people could take another look and provide some more feedback to see if I'm heading in the right direction for you.
Cheers. |
