Edited by: Tornikey on 02/11/2008 13:22:07 1. What are these special names representing? 2. How can I view them in-game? 3. I've checked Ombey printable maps and these names are on some of the systems, but not on others. What is the reason for this?
Thanks.

Those systems are typically 0.0 systems and not empire systems.

The systems with those names are all in 0.0 space and typically have no meaning, and their names were most likely randomly generated when they were created.

Not all stars have 'sensible' names ligel Rigel or Betelguese as there's too many to name, so I'm guessing that CCP have stuck with this same theme for their star maps and have given the ones outside of empire the same type of names we've given our lesser stars.
Wolf-359's my favourite BTW.

As Dyaven said those systems are all in 0.0. There are a couple of 0.0 systems with real names though. For example, Shintaht.
The names are randomly generated and don't mean anything.

Even more odd... what's the reasoning behind CCP-US and JB-007 to mention a few?

Even though they show as 0.0 if it has a proper name it is still owned by an empire, so gate guns and station guns will respond, as well as any security hits for the crime. Egbinger is another one that displays as 0.0 but is still empire
I guess with the ones that make sense kinda are just CCP humor.. :) Why not? Randomly generate them, but a few for fun.. :)
EWOK is another one not sure on its format may be a zero, or have a dash in it (EW-0K) or whatever another one that is 0-sht or something similar -----------------------------------------------

There are lots of other fun ones:
IPAY-2 P3EN-E EWOK-K NI-J0B
There are likely to be plenty more. I am guessing that the psuedo-random name generator must have been on CR-AQH or something

What you are talking about are systems with a true sec of between 0.0 and 0.5, they get rounded down to 0.0. The true sec of Egbinger is 0.03.
But the true sec for Shintaht is -0.09 and it is indeed proper 0.0. CVA has sovereignty in it.

Edited by: Helen Hunts on 03/11/2008 04:18:57 Those oddball names are the scientific shorthand designations. (or something approximating it) Names are usually reserved for the systems that are somewhat inhabited or traveled. (Let's see you come up with 5000+ unique system names) Most of the 'properly' named 0.0 systems were named by players who held soverignty over those systems when CCP allowed soverignty holders to give systems an actual name.
Now if you want to go there....take something small, fast and cheap. Not all of the 0.0 denizens are friendly, and most tend to be very territorial.

In General: Systems with names are Empire owned. Systems with pseudo-randomly generated codes are 0.0.
It's not hard and fast, but in general it's true. From an RP point of view, I guess you could say the Empires named their systems and left the 0.0 systems with codes. ______________________ Isn't it time you learned to fight back? Agony Unleashed Home of the PvP University.

Find a sentry gun or receive a security hit for shooting someone in Serpentis Prime or Heaven and I'll give you 1 billion isk.
Some 0.0 systems have proper names like those but that doesn't make them any less 0.0. Usually that means they are the home systems of a pirate faction (Serpentis and Angels in those two cases).

Thanks for the replies. I'm still waiting for the reply about how to view those names on the in-game map.

I have no idea what you mean. Can't you see systems names in the map?

There's no "how to" about it. These are not some kind of special alternative way of referring to any system - these are just the names of certain system. Some systems have names like "Jita", "Rens" etc, and these systems have names like "EC-P8R", "EWOK-K" and so forth. If you show a 0.0 system in your map you will see its name there just the as with empire systems.

Not in 0.0.
But you might be able to cache in on that offer if you get lucky with a mission in that system.

Not in 0.0.
If there aren't, there used to be once; but those sentry guns would only shoot at you if you were mad enough to attack the station. They didn't give a flying rat's ass if you were shooting other people or not.

Yep and it happens A LOT that a inty or other small ship gets insta-popped by the station guns in 0.0 cuz they lock the station instead of the target... (I know there are station guns in venal, dunno about the rest) ------------------------------------------
