I myself am a taranis pilot, but the more I fly it the more I see some fittings (on the ones that die) that are just bad.
Okay, so you want to fly the taranis. It's a fun ship, think of it like you are a football player actually tackling someone, shoving a grenade down their throat and taping their mouth shut. That is the Taranis.
Now, I also know the common rule that many people who fly blaster ships always want Neutrons, no matter what.
If you do this to the ranis, you suck. Plain and simple.
Here is the correct Ranis fit, take it with you to your grave (or until a patch).
High: 3x Light Ion Blasters II 1x Remote armor repper (offlined)
Med: 1x 1MN Microwarpdrive II 1x stasis webifier 1x warp disruptor
Low: 1x DCU II 1x Magnetic Field Stabilizer II 1x Overdrive injector system (this last part is really your choice, but most prefer the OIS).
Do not, trade out the Mag Stab for a Micro Aux Power Core. Drones are your choice, I prefer 2x hobgoblins, or 2x warriors.
Please, stop cluttering up my KM's with bad blasteranis builds, get it straight damn it!
Fly safe.

As much as I recognize you to be the pvp god of the taranis, there are in fact many other setups that are very valid. Your setup is good for 1v1, somewhat useful for solo, somewhat useful in small gang, and absolutely useless in fleet. So unless you're doing 1v1s all the time, then there are other fittings that make more sense for any given situation. -----------

Yeah, the Ares is probably the better choice for fleets though, with the longer scram range and better speed.

Edited by: Strill on 04/11/2008 07:47:00 There's enough spare fitting left to upgrade one of those ions to neutrons without changing anything else. Would that be a bad idea for some reason?

Ive heard people say they've had succes with a dog fighting rail ranis. Same concept, except fit 125mm rails to the standard cookie blasterranis fit.
Dps is lower, but still better than most. With Caldari navy am you can hit to about 11km. Its nice for when that crow you just webbed has webbed you back and is slowly moving out of your null s range.

OP your setup is pretty much identical to mine, except I use a second Magstab instead of the OD (dropping to named warp disruptor and web).

This.
Ranis is already a slug, so who cares if it's a slightly faster slug. You won't catch quick ships anyways, so fit for dps.
It's job is to melt faces. Quoting someone else: "You fly a Taranis. A fight starts. Someone dies."

Don't underestimate the power of the railranis. I hate people who bring rapiers to a ranis fight.

why the overdrive? and no rigs?
I use: 3x ion mwd, point, webb dcu, 2x magstab hybrid damage or speed rigs
OR
3x neutron mwd, point, webb dcu, magstab, maux 2x hybrid damage rigs
neutrons got beter range then ions...
but mostly I use rail setup:
3x 125mm mwd, point, webb dcu, magstab, overdrive/tracking enhancer 2x speed rigs/hybrid damage --------

I use that neutron setup mostly. Far better than the OP. I also fly railranis some.

Actually if you do use this neutron set-up, go for it. By all means do it. My complaint was of people taking out the mag stab, putting in one or TWO MAUX, just so they could fit the neutrons.
This is indeed for small gangs, 1v1, and anything else you may consider fun, but if you are sacrificing that much power just to put on Neutrons, downgrade it to ions.
Also, the main reason why I have NOT put on rigs is because it's a cheap, expendable ship that I am more than ready to lose. I have been mostly using these on small gate camps, where we either have a mobile disruptor or a HIC, the ranis seems to excell at those since it does not need orbit the target, instead it just hits it head on. The orbitting can sometimes cause you to go out of target range (like in the ares where you can have a 30KM targetting, and a 30KM point with the right skills).
If you want to have fun, and you want to do something that isn't like the other interceptors and a bulldog in its own right. This is for you.
PS: good points on the MAUX/Overdrive it actually never crossed my mind to switch them out (DOH!), I would put on some neutrons if all I had to do was sacrifice the MAUX.
Enjoy! |

Edited by: Dyaven on 04/11/2008 16:12:55 I was wondering why the setup I had EFT'ed and ready to use once I finish training High Speed Maneuvering couldn't fit Ions on it after reading this thread, and I realized it was because I had fit a Small Nos II in the fourth hi-slot, making the setup cap stable. Would ions and only lasting a minute running everything be better than being able to sustain myself for more than 60 seconds?

Electrons + Taranis = **** **** ****. You already have 0 range, and in a Taranis youre just going to overshoot it and get smoked by any competent pilot. Also, you don't fly a Taranis to be cap stable. Ditch the nos and replace it with an offline salvager.
But overall, rails with cn antimatter, mfs2, dcu2, od2, & damage rigs > any blaster setup. - FRIGANK|FRIGANK 2 |

The reason I put a Small Remote Armor rep in the high's (offlined) is for two reasons:
A. if you are in a roaming gang, find a target, kill it, and someone else (probably a frig/nano gang) doesn't have reps, you can safe up, offline guns and then put the remote armor rep online to rep your friends.
B. it's a heat sink, when you overheat the rack the remote armor rep will help act like a heat sink, which is also helpful in tight situations where you want to keep punching the other ship in the face.
EDIT: Keep this in mind for all of those that are thinking of flying the the blasteranis, This ship's MWD is not meant to be online forever, once you get to the target, shut it off, orbit (or just stay in one position and use voids to your advantage on larger targets). DO NOT keep the MWD running, the blasteranis is cap stable enough for one of two things; you die, or the target dies.

I do like that fit and used to use it a lot but I got tired of losing fights to other Taranis's and started fitting like this instead:
Highs: 3x Light Ion Blasters w/ Faction Antimatter 1x Something Offlined As A Heatsink
Mids: 1x 1MN MWD II 1x 7.5km Scram 1x X5 Web
Lows: 2x Magnetic Field Stabilizer II 1x Named Damage Control
Drones: 2x Warrior II
It isn't quite as versatile as the faster fit with the overdrive and a long range disruptor but the extra DPS ensures that you are going to have a really tough time losing to any other close range ceptor. ----- My Pirate Blog: http://evenewb.blogspot.com/

Post-patch rails are going to be a lot nicer since you don't have 90% webs anymore keeping people in blaster range is a ****ing pain. -=^=- "Someday the world will recognize the genius in my insanity." |
