Been musing with this idea, thought I'd throw it open for comment and flamage
How about allowing players to log in to an "NPC" account, where they could spawn as an NPC faction in a system/ const or region of their choice. They would randomly get a frig or cruiser (or BS in 0.0), and perhaps have very limited fitting options based on their faction.
They'd be clearly labelled as player NPCs, and their bounties would be higher than AI controlled NPCs for obvious reasons.
They wouldn't be allowed to leave the system they are in, and are limited to either being in the belts or on the gates- can't warp anywhere else.
Obviously they'd be no match for half decent players, but fighting a human is always more fun and satisfying. Playing an NPC, imho, would be quite good fun, good practice and a sense of achievement if you kill someone.
There would, naturally, be no persistence of character- when you die there is no pod, you just re-spawn in another NPC ship
Benefits: - revived interest in ratting - possibly provide the pull into lowsec that is much needed - good 'no risk' practice for players who want to play as the NPCs - good fun for all - a PvP fix for those who need it - you can attack people at gates with no sentry fire (like the current NPCs) - can despawn and respawn afresh in a busier system if no targets
Disadvantages: - could be boring if no-one is around - someone will probably find a way to grief players I am sure - (I am sure you can find more ) --

While this is generally a very nice idea you forgot one important thing - it would be waaaayyyy too easy to make large amounts of moeny through bounty. How? Log an ALT to a NPC and shoot it with your main while the ALT just sits still

So you'd restrict respawning to the same region once dead.
Or even better, the 'NPC' pilot doesn't know where they are. Remove local, all things from overview that gives away which system they're in (like station and planet names). That way, it'd be hard to farm as you don't know where you (as the 'NPC') are. --

its a nice idea, skip fitting and all that, spawn the player-npc randomly in a system at a location where a player has been around for some time... _________________________________________________

Well, this way it could work. As I already said - the idea is good. Anyway there's the possibility that the pilot of the NPC-ship just does nothing and somebody gets some easy money. This is the main problem I see.

.. computer has to take over the controls if you don't fight back or maybe the bounty price is calculated based on player NPC player action ... if NPC stay and do nothong bounty should be x % lower than usualy .. if NPC fights back for good and do a lot of damage to the player .. bounty should be x % higher.
this is very good idea .. i support it Metal lives forever !! |

why not make the final bounty = base bounty * average dps till destruction/100, with a minimum multiplier of 1 _________________________________________________

this is a lot like turbines session play machnic in lord of the rings online.
i would however make one change to they way this works, use it mainly to allow players to see things from the npc rats side of things and dont provide a tonne of really good rewards or it is going to get abused. it could also be used as a story telling machanic to allow players to participate in some of the "epic wars" that were fought long ago in eves past such as the war that lead to the discovery of the wormhole leading to new eden |

this is what i would think to be the best part of it . let the players finally deal with the macroers on our own terms
