Space-Simulators are considered a Niche Game and dead in eyes of the Marketing-know-it-alls and they have the last word when it comes to the Games that will be made, or not made.

and the reasom why is:
not one of the recent space sims had amultiplayer. on every space sim people ask for it but don't get it. a freelancer two with multiplayer would give the genre a big boost.
and face it games like the X series are just to hardcore to lure the casual player. darkstar one wa snice but freelancer was better on all front save grafics (duh) space force rogue universe same storry and it was also to difficult for a lot of people.
freelancer had a great storry (dam i played it to the late hours just to know what would happen) easy controls, the combat worked great. the travel lanes made travel fast and fun easier than some time accelerator where you have to get ageneral aim for a location.
also it was just in orbit of planet X and ever system was different.
hell eve a freelancer game with new grafics and a new storry and leave every thing els the same would beat any of the other recent space sims. Jaine Li just doing want needs to be done. PS: who stole my whiskey? |

I absolutely love Freelancer. I've never managed to finish it, though, because playing it gives me migraines.

any idea why? perhaps lowering gamma and reducing effects might ease it down a bit for the brains. as it surely is a sad thing if you cannot play it. even if it was just to finnish it. Jaine Li just doing want needs to be done. PS: who stole my whiskey? |

Honestly I would prefer a starlancer relase, i found it to be a much better game than freelancer... ========= "I am not saying there should be capital punishment for stupidity, but why can`t we just take the safety labels off everything and let the problem fix its self |

I played it alot, and never played the single player. I went straight in to the colours server and had many a good battle with up to 60 other pilots
Microsoft released freelancer and completely forgot about it, the potential to make it much better was there but the developer was AWOL

Freelancer was supposed to be much more but MS games interfered in the development process sadly digital anvil lost key members of its team due to this and eventually was closed down. I doubt a sequel would ever be made and the best the FL community can hope for is the release of the source code so the modders and general community can keep up the good work but even that is highly unlikely.
Infinity looks like it could be the spiritual successor (if it ever happens) and net devil have stated on several occasions that Freelancer is a source for inspiration and in many ways JGE is closer to FL than the original jumpgate.

Freelancer was a flop. It was supposed to be a completely open game much in the same vein as Elite. M$ were instrumental in forcing the changes that made it a mission based game and as already stated, many of the original developers from Digital Anvil left when they saw the direction FL was heading. With the game only half complete and the remainder still only ideas of those who left, FL was far less than what was envisioned in the beginning. FL2 won't be any better with M$ at the helm.
It's a shame that those who left DA didn't start to work on another game that would be what FL was supposed to be.

only took 30 seconds, so why not. at the end it may work, shouldn't jsut give up and pretend i know MS better than everyone else.

*whished he had a good bag of money to start it own game studio and make a propper space sim*
to poster above quote. open ended games aint allways the best and freelancer was far away from beeing a flop there are verry view games with such a amount of mods and fans as freelancer. Jaine Li just doing want needs to be done. PS: who stole my whiskey? |

In the marketing sense it was a flop but even with most of guts ripped out the basics made for an extremely fun game and in the mulitplayer sense the game is very open and the community added its own content either by clans fighting it out and the modding scene along with a healthily sized RP community, some of the mods where poor but some really added to the gameplay and added content for both the pvping and RP elements.

The only reason FL got so many players is due to mods and such on web sites like www.lancersreactor.com. They had a load of mods available for download and had it not been for them, most of the game would have been unplayable due to so many levels requiring the missions to achieve.
Had the missions been a sideline and the levels been upgraded on fame, cash or something, the game may have been good from the start. Getting a Valkyerie is pretty much endgame anyway since it eats anything in it's path.

I feel pitty for the valkyerie when it encounters me in my eagle. I will out manouver you (it can outmanouvers some of the light ships even) and outgun you (named guns +2 cannon ball missle or krakens). and freelancers story is good enough to be worth it to play it all trough. and most succesfull games stay succesfull due modding.
btw who els agrees that the eagle is the best ship in the vanilia game?

If you're really really good, Drake is the best one. It beats any other, even the Eagle, in terms of agility, so in 1v1 it's impossible to get your crosshairs on one unless the Drake pilot doesn't know what he's doing. Of course, the lack of firepower and defense make it a tricky ship to fly.

good point those are nasty but in my vanilia onlone time i usealy got rid of them with some mines. takes a bit of work to get that right but when done the mines eat them.
but i love the drake to allways my ship till i can geta hold of the eagle.

I loved Freelancer's singleplayer, but as soon as you finished the story there just wasn't anything to do. All the missions were the same thing pretty much, trading wasn't particually exciting and I hated the combat with a passion. It was like it was trying to be arcadey and in-depth at the same time.
Anyways, whatever happened to games like Freespace?
