So I have a Rifter, and what I believe to be a decent fitting. What I'm curious about though, is how to find a target using the directional scanner... in fact, am I even supposed to use the directional scanner? Essentially, how do I go about finding a viable target to ransom? Thanks for the help.

start with belts and move on. Later on you will know how to use the scanner to find them, but without probes you will not be able to really find them if they are in a safe spot. one rifter means that you want similar ''soft'' targets so when you do find some be carefull.

When you say "soft targets," do you mean indy ships, or basically any ship that wouldn't be able to fight back?

the rifter is a soft target, as in a way your main tanking is speed. if someone cut you off in speed he/she will take you down easily if they fly a crus pluss etc. by soft i mean any other target that YOU can take down. if that is another frig, an indi or a cruiser or what ever else bad fitted then you got it.
i am not sure how profitable it will be for you to solo in low or 0.0 with just a rifter. Since you want to go i advice to start with a quiet low sec to practise a bit first

Just pick your targets correctly
If you see like say, a drake on your scanner - make sure you check the player's age as well as some ,amazingly enough , will fly them prematurely and often have fail fits which are always fun to pop
You can always practice with the scanner in high sec as well too if that helps.

Reyn, i'd suggest that you join yourself up to a reasonably large pirate corp (30+ members) as they can teach you how to fly that thing in gangs and how to use the directional scanner. It's a useful tool and when you get a grasp of it you can find a target in just under 10 seconds. A well trained scanner can do it in under 8. Obviously, if they're at a POS or Safespot, then you aren't going to find them as easily.
But yeh, get yourself a decent corporation and fly with them in small wolfpack gangs, that way you'll learn very quickly, this also allows you to take down bigger targets

The best and easiest way is to come on over to Amamake and sit in the top belt. If you wait long enough more then enough pirates will show up and answer any and all questions you may have about yarrrrring.

I'd suggest Amamake. It stays busy, and honestly... if you can cut it there, you can probably make it anywhere (same with the other pirate hubs I'm sure).
Make multiple SS's around the system. Keep moving between SS's (believe it or not, people will break out probes for a Rifter ). Practice scanning the belts; learn to use the scanner quickly to determine a.) what's around you (Amamake is great for this as everything in system is within scan range IIRC), and b.) what is at a particular belt/gate/planet.
I fly the Rifter almost exclusively... but am not really a traditional pirate. I don't ransom. Given the quick nature of frigate fights and their low costs (which translate to crap ransoms), it is far safer and quicker to destroy your opponent's ship and loot the wreck than to bicker (in Amamake no less!) over a ransom price. Every second you stay at a belt or planet increases the chance someone's going to warp in (or that a SB will decloak and nail you).
Good thing about Amamake and surrounding systems is that there are others like you: solo, in a frig or inty, and looking for a fight.
Good luck.

LOL. Just saw this. It's true, but don't talk yourself into something you can't win. Trust your first instinct.
Saw a Ruppie alone and ratting in a low-sec system. Player was a May 2008. I'm a 2006. My first instinct was: too big... leave it alone. But then I talked myself into it.
He's young. Cruiser's probably not well fit. (It was a good PvP fit.)
He's ratting. Probably not using a PvP fit at all. I highly doubt if he's got a scram, let alone a webber. Bet he's got arties too. (He had both scram and web, and was using autocannons.)
He's not deploying drones. Bet he only has four and they'll be Hobbie I's which shouldn't be a problem, and they're probably not trained very well at that. (He had Warrior II's, and obviously spent some time on Drone Interfacing.)
His skills will be weak. Bet he's spent some of his time training industrial crap. He won't have the strength of a targeted training program. (He appears to have focused his skills nicely.)
I'm faster and can bug out if it looks like things are going balls up. (Not if I foolishly entered into web range to get better damage and he wisely reserved the scram for halfway through the fight.)
Guess how that fight went.
Trust your instincts.

A quick question, or two rather. SS stands for safe spot correct? Also, would there be happen to be any stations in Amamake?

Edited by: Captain Infidel on 10/11/2008 18:53:33 Hey Reyn,
i can vouch for the profitability of rifter low sec piracy. you WILL NOT however be killing all that much, the profits come from obviously:
1) the uber cheapness of rifter 2) stealing loot left behind from other encounters, loot wrecks on gates then take it back to a station. if you see cans in belts or scattered round, try and loot them.. beware it might be a trap though.
3) infiltrating a faction warfare plex containing frigs and destroyers. you can easily take out a ship, loot it and get out, they are often taken by surprise.
4) industrial kills are too rare as are miner kills. you may find the odd noob in a destroyer or cruiser, caldari cruisers melt before a rifters guns so engage at will, a newish player in an omen is always a good target too remember to get in close so he cant track.
if you want, me and my brother just started flying in the placid/verge vendor region and are looking for a third to join us at some point. we hate flying in blobs and prefer to use t1 cruisers, incursus, rifter or t2 frigates. I generally have a few very seedy ways of getting noob carebears to taste my guns or heed a ransom :) hook me up in game if you fancy it!
you will be surprised how well 2-3 frigs fitted correctly can do, or a couple of frigs and an ewar cruiser.
